The Blue Jays could have been swept by Anaheim. If the Angels had covered home plate the first two games, if a hard smash off Jason Frasor had found its way into right field last night, the Jays would have been looking at another embarrassing home-field wipeout. Instead, they're riding a modest but much-valued three-game winning streak, and having stood their ground in Boston the weekend before, they've essentially played the American League's best to a standstill. This team is finally showing signs of a real turnaround.

But the Blue Jays still need, and I mean need, certain things to happen:

* Carlos Delgado has to really catch fire. We've all seen it happen before, and we know he can carry this team when it does. The signs of an impending breakout are there, and he has a history of lighting up the Rangers.

* Eric Hinske has to shake off whatever is bedevilling him. He's now buried in the 8th spot, and amazingly, it's gotten to the point where he's more valuable for his glove than for his bat. He must regain his confidence and command at the plate.

* Miguel Batista and Ted Lilly have to get their ERAs down into the 4.00s. Batista has to master his command, and Lilly has to find a way to reduce the damage from the home runs he inevitably allows. Neither of these pitchers are aces, but they've shown they can be solid performers already this season.

Everything else is secondary, even the return to action of the regular middle-infield combo, the left fielder and the best reliever in the bullpen. This series, against the suddenly scuffling Texas Rangers, will provide an opportunity for any or all three of these elements to fall into place.

The Rangers aren't at their best, either. Their starting outfield tonight -- Eric Young, Gary Matthews Jr. and Chad Allen -- isn't just Triple-A quality, it will hurt flyball-prone Rangers starter R.A. Dickey. Both Dickey and Ted Lilly, the Toronto starter, are prone to the long ball; if neither is sharp, we could be looking at quite a slugfest tonight.

Pro athletes are notoriously superstitious, and the good fortune the Jays have experienced recently, combined with the effort and toughness they've displayed the last week or so, could be enough to feed into a general team-wide sense of momentum. And since I'm feeling particularly bullish, here's my one and only prediction for tonight's game: Alex Rios is going to crank out his first major-league home run.

Well Lucas thats what we're hoping for from the Rangers, no offense.

Hey Lucas, it looks to me like Eric the Young is playing himself into a near fulltime job with the injuries facing Taxas. Do you think he'll see semi regular duty the rest of the way through? Yes this is what it seems, looking for a little roto insight.
_Lefty - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 07:21 PM EDT (#61524) #
Rob Faulds mentioned the K hanging on the Perry strike out to end the first. I didn't quite get what he said but I did hear him mention "section 518".
_Lefty - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 07:24 PM EDT (#61525) #
I must be the only one here tonite. Carlos just cranked it right centre for a two run shot. Gideon was calling for a continued Carlos breakout. Ask and ye shall recieve. Nice call.
_Nigel - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 07:24 PM EDT (#61526) #
This sure is a nice start. Getting the big man hot would make a huge difference with Hudson and F-Cat both out.

Do you think he'll see semi regular duty the rest of the way through?

Mmm, it's possible, but not likely. Nix and Mench (once healthy) will always play against righties, and Showalter has a soft spot in his heart for Dellucci, who used to play for him in AZ. (This is better than last year, when Showalter's love-jones was for Donnie Sadler.) Texas isn't too thrilled with Young's outfield defense and was actually putting Mench in center and Young in left before Mench was hurt. In order for Young to claim a full-time job he'll need:

1) the Rangers to stay in contention,
2) him to keep hitting well, and
3) an injury to, or complete collapse by, one of the regulars,

Dickey's offerings sure must look good tonight because everyone's up there hacking early and often.

Showalter said this morning on the radio that he didn't regret letting Dickey throw 131 pitches a few starts ago.

I guess I'll have to regret it for him.

Coach - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 07:47 PM EDT (#61546) #
This team is finally showing signs of a real turnaround.

Brother Gideon speaks the truth, as always.

Y'all are so going to lose.

Scott, I'll be happy if the Jays win the series; that's a very nice team you have. Last year's model came in here, thumped us 7-0 in the first four innings and won 16-11, in front of 48,000 embarrassed witnesses. I'm not predicting a sweep this weekend, only a ton of runs.

Tonight has been fun to watch so far. Lilly doesn't have to be perfect, just minimize the damage -- Carlos has answered the bell and more support is on the way.
_Nigel - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 07:49 PM EDT (#61547) #
Walking the leadoff hitter in back to back innings after being staked to a 4 run lead defines what makes Lilly so frustrating. He has an Escobarian flair to his problems.

Wonderful catch by Wells, and a fine throw. Rios is learning from one of the best now.

I'm liking this OF defense set-up. Nice catch by Alexis followed up by a great grab and shot to first by Vernon to dirty Soriano's uni.

Soriano's stolen base removed and a balk charged to Lilly.
_Nigel - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 07:58 PM EDT (#61553) #
Thankfully the bullpen got a good rest last night. With his pitchcount being high again, Lilly is only likely to go 5 or 6 at best. Without a large amount of luck (and some good outfield defense) this game would be at least tied.
_Steve Z - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 07:58 PM EDT (#61554) #

Fog is one.

"June 18, 1997: In the fog in Toronto, Carlos Delgado hits a 3-run home run to give the Jays a 5–3 win over the Braves. There is a 14-minute fog delay in the fourth inning as the game is interrupted while the retractable roof at SkyDome is closed. The fog then dissipates."

I was at one of the rain delay games ... the skies suddenly opened up and sent the players scrambling off the field and the fans underneath the decks. It only lasted 5 minutes, and it was actually pretty cool; the place smelled of rain and fresh air, and it felt like a ballpark for once.

Props from Faulds and Cerutti for the Cheer Club ... noting the Teddy Roosevelt K-banners, Cerutti says, "There's some fans who've done their homework ... I like to see that."

All I need now is the Rios homer to look like I know what I'm talking about... ;-)

The radio broadcasters are also saying nice things about the Cheer Club. Mike Wilner mentioned the O-Drum by name, and Tom Cheek mentioned the Theodore Roosevelt K's, and pointed out that a group of vocal fans were in the same section for every game. Cheek approved, saying that it was good to see them add some life to the place.

Good work, all!

And while I'm here: baseball can be a simple game sometimes. The top of the order gets on, and Delgado brings 'em home. Yay.

Cheek approved, saying that it was good to see them add some life to the place.

No kidding. It's fantastic to hear some noise in SkyDome. It may not be Fenway or Stadium loud, but it's starting to sound more like 30,000 a game than 15,000 and that's something.
_Fawaz K - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 08:39 PM EDT (#61585) #

Sportsnet just pointed out the Cheer Club mentioning them by name. Getting a several second camera shot of the O-Drum (also mentioned by name). Plus the Rios sign, the Rooselvelt K's, even the Hentgen for Closer sign got mentioned.

That's fantastic. The Jays have encouraged the Cheer Club, Aaron and company have made it tremendous fun up there and the broadcasters aren't the only ones who have noticed. Fans can hear the chants all over the park now, and everyone likes it. I'm sure Gregg Zaun does.

Lilly just can't stand prosperity, but his "D" keeps picking him up.

The funny thing about Lilly is that although his walk rates aren't great they aren't terrible either. He does nibble a lot with 2 strikes though and it has pretty much limited him to being a 5-6 inning pitcher throughout his career even when he's going well.
_Magpie - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 08:51 PM EDT (#61595) #
Lilly reminds me a little of Sid Fernandez; not as extreme, but he's a lefty strikeout pitcher who does not have an overwhelming fastball, gets a lot of flyballs, and throws an awful lot of pitches.

Without the funky motion.

And without the forty or so extra pounds.

But you get the idea...
_Fawaz K - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 08:51 PM EDT (#61596) #
Does Lilly come out for the 7th? Or do you bring someone in? I give it to Ligtenberg...
_Nigel - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 08:52 PM EDT (#61597) #
Hopefully that's the end of Lilly's night. 103 pitches through 6 innings is plenty. With 11 baserunners through 6 innings, some outstanding outfield defense to keep a few more hits off the board and some real luck it hasn't been a very impressive performance but he does get high marks for hanging in there. I love the outfield defense tonight.
_Fawaz K - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 08:52 PM EDT (#61598) #

Lilly may have been all over the place tonight, Lefty, but he has been known to command the zone a lot better than this, like in the playoffs last year. Hitters can dig in more against Ted; Zambrano throws heat and is even wilder.

Ligtenberg, Lopez and Chulk are all reasonable choices; Tosca's waiting to be up by eight (or down by a bunch another day) to use Chulk, and has more confidence in Kerry tonight than Aquilino.

_Fawaz K - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:02 PM EDT (#61606) #
Not to jinx it, but a win tonight gets the Jays to .500 at home. That's pretty good after that lousy start.

I don't think it's a coincidence that it started coming together at home when 518 really started to take over and the normally demure SkyDome crowd started getting on opposing pitchers and making some noise.
Coach - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:11 PM EDT (#61607) #
Nice job by Ligtenberg; Soriano just got lucky. He could go another inning, but they might also use Kershner next inning to get Blalock, then Adams if they get back around to the top of the order. No matter what Tosca does, some will hate it.

He's no Bordick, and he's not even Woody, but Chris Gomez has won me over, making most of the easy plays and quite a few of the difficult ones. All the emergency replacements are contributing.
_Fawaz K - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:16 PM EDT (#61608) #
I really didn't think Tosca could do something to make me second-guess him...But what's the point of this?
Coach - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:20 PM EDT (#61609) #
Some armchair managers will think Ligtenberg was left in one hitter too long. Others will question the Adams-Blalock matchup that Tosca preferred to using Kershner for just one batter. No matter what you do, it's wide open to criticism.

It's quite possible that two good hitters just won those at-bats and the skipper did everything right.
_gid - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:20 PM EDT (#61610) #

No matter what Tosca does, some will hate it.

Texas is the exact type of team that I wouldn't mind seeing Tosca making a lot of moves against. They platoon at several positions using players with large platoon differentials. Having 2 LHP will offer nice flexibility against Blalock, Nix and Delucci. Their switch-hitter, Texeira, is worse against RHP so it was nice to see Ligtenberg left in against him.
_Loveshack - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:23 PM EDT (#61613) #

Here I am, yelling at Buck Showalter, "You've got Nix AND Fullmer AND Dellucci on the bench and you're letting Barajas hit!!!! You $*%#@!"

Lucas, could it be that any of those three would almost certainly have resulted in a southpaw? Showalter has no RHB left (other than Huckaby) so he would have been stuck with the LHP/LHB matchup. He probably thought he was better off with Barajas vs Adams.

If Tosca plays his cards right, he can avoid throwing a RHP against any of those three LHB, leaving them on the bench for the rest of the game.

Wells makes catches look way too easy. He's running, his arm isn't extended, I think "Great, the ball's going to split Wells and Rios" as they're both slowing down. Then all of a sudden the ball's in Wells' glove.
_Randy Winter - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:39 PM EDT (#61627) #
I'm hoping they use Huckaby in New York, so he can say "Howdy" to Jeter.

What a great time to be a baseball fan. This game bogged down? Watch a few innings of Grienke. This game gets interesting again? Head right back to see Frasor become the man...

Good times.

We might have to revisit the "best Jays defensive OF" thread, sooner than later!

Nice catch, VW!

Nice job Frasor. Nice play Carlos.

.500 at home!
Coach - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:44 PM EDT (#61631) #
After nibbling for the first two pitches, Frasor was aggressive with Young until he got him to fly out. He backed Soriano up with a curve inside, painted the black with a fastball then popped him up. First pitch to Teixeira was away, seeing if he'd chase, then they went right after him with heat, in a perfect place, twice. Finally, the 2-2 grounder, well played by Delgado.

Great job, Jason!

Frasor gets my vote,he throws strikes
_Fawaz K - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:48 PM EDT (#61633) #
Frasor would have been unlucky of Soriano managed to hit that one out - the only bad pitch he made.

Good point. But Barajas, though it a hot stretch, is traditionally atrocious against righties (.213/.249/.341). Fullmer and Nix actually both hit lefties better than Barajas hits righties, and Dellucci is about equal. If Tosca decides to stick with the righty for whatever reason, all the better (from my perspective).

I'm skeptical that this is a case of Showalter examining the situation as we are now. Last year, he'd let Einar Diaz bat late in important situations all the time. Very painful.

In any case, it worked out perfectly for Showalter and Barajas. Hard to argue with results.
_R Billie - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:54 PM EDT (#61636) #
Frasor didn't look pretty except for a couple of well located fastballs but the two hard hit balls found gloves. Jason did not have control over his slider at all and fortunately that didn't hurt him. Soriano popped up a hanging slider very high to medium left...probably a smidge away from a game tying homer but the Jays walk away with the win.

I would not have pulled Ligtenberg in the 8th myself. He was locating well and Perry hit a fastball which was in a good spot. Adams got two strikeouts but his location seems to be so inconsistent right now he still makes me nervous. Though to be fair you don't expect many bottom of the order hitters to have the power Barajas has shown.

Did I say Rios' first home run? I meant first RBI. :-)

Good win ... another nail-biter. Four consecutive one-run victories, folks.

I predict an appearance by the Cheer Club on the J-Zone before long.

I'm skeptical that this is a case of Showalter examining the situation as we are now.

Showalter is a tough nut to figure. Back in his Yankee days, I used to be impressed by him. He seemed to be sharper than the average bear. He'd bring in Rivera for 1 1/3 inning saves if it meant staving off danger in the 8th. Few other managers would have dared bring in their closer in such situations.

Just as a curiosity (and not that I doubt your take on the matter), but if you hear a rationale expressed by Showalter for leaving Barajas in, would you mind sharing it this weekend? Of course, he could just say something innocuous like "I had a good feeling" and who would dare argue given the results?

Jason Friseur
Frank Mention
Alex Rio

What's next?
_Chuck Van Den C - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 10:19 PM EDT (#61645) #
The AP article is a riot. Delgado is Deluged. I guess that's what happens when you use spell-check and accept all the suggested alternatives.

I'm not sure where Friseur came from, though.
_Randy Winter - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 10:21 PM EDT (#61646) #
Yahoo originally had this:

"Frank Mention and Vernon Wells hit consecutive doubles in the first before Deluged homered off R.A. Dickey (4-5)."

They've since corrected the names.

Mind you, I wouldn't mind a deluge from Carlos...

Around the league...

* Rich Aurilia hit his first HR of the year off Pedro Martinez. Pat Borders got the start at catcher for Seattle.

* Barry Zito finally pitches well but the A's lose via a shutout.

* Melvin Mora is up to .390.

* Chris Carpenter leads Roger Clemens 1-0 after 8 IP. Carpenter's ERA is in the low 3's.

* Griffey hits #12.

Did anyone tape the game? The narcissist in me wants to see myself on TV. ;)

I think I should start putting some goofy audio and video up at bluejayscheerclub.com.

We heard Wilner giving us a shout out on the radio in the post-game on the drive home, and a fan called in and asked what he thought about the Hentgen For Closer sign. Surprisingly, he didn't think it was a totally awful idea! But he did say he didn't think it was a good idea. ;)

I agree, Mike, Frasor's doing great.

See you all on Sunday!

I just want to say that it seems like the folks in section 518 are doing a great job, and with the exposure that you're getting from the radio and television broadcasts it should only get better.
Keep it up!

I remember in the offseason when Bauxites were clamouring for JP to sign Aurilia's carcass...to be fair I think I may have been one of those Bauxites.

Thanks for a great game tonight. I'm watching it back on my PVR and even got to see myself sitting in behind the Hentgen... just a warning to whoever takes my spot as pinch-drummer for the next week, don't get comfortable, because I'll be back. (I'm in Austin TX for a week on business.) I'll be monitoring the Baux while on the road.

Very enjoyable game. Very. I'm a little miffed that no-one hears the Menechino chant on TV, though....

Whoah. Zach Greinke pitched 7 innings of 1 run ball. But 2 K's? And he's only got 3 K's in 12 innings. Of course, he also only has 2 walks in 12 innings. Probably small sample size rearing its ugly head, but still, that's pretty weird.

Cheer Club
On only a couple hours sleep I wasn't so much a member of the club this evening, but it's certainly a blast sitting there and I'm thrilled the boys who were blowing out their wind pipes are getting the recognition they deserve.

MEMO TO MARKETING DEPT
The O-Drum attracted 15 year old girls to 518 this evening...why this is notable is that they paid to get into the Dome on a Friday night for a ball game. Their reason for being in attendance? "What else can you do for $9 on a Friday night that is all ages?," asked one of them. So alas, this seems like a niche worth advertising to.

Teacher shortage?
We're short on qualified math, science, art and tech teachers as well as elementary school teachers, though that shortage generally applies to regions out side Toronto.

...As far as the budget goes for education, that money is useless. Education won't improve much at all. It'll just be more teachers crammed into larger, more decrepit buildings. Dalton wants to be the "Education Premier"? Fine. But be it. They promised to implement Rozanski and sorrowly failed at that (among many other promises). Instead they've effectively wasted those hundreds of millions.

If you think the cheer club is a success now, wait until INSURRECTION DAY. That day will reign in infamy, and breakthrough the cheer club. That day is where we pull out all the stops.

"What else can you do for $9 on a Friday night that is all ages?"

This is astonishing and extremely exciting to me. I don't know if the Jays brass read da Box regularly or in-depth, but the possibility of young, excited fans making a ton of noise along with the Cheer Club makes me want to do some guerilla marketing. Signs downtown, buying web ads, things like that. Maybe a big sign at the game: "Join us here in 518! $9 for hours of fun!" or something like that.
