The front-running Walrus endured our worst week of the season by far, yet somehow managed to escape with a 6-6 draw and maintained a nine-game lead in the standings. It helped that none of the closest contenders had great weeks, either. Mebion Glyndwr held on to second by rallying from an 8-3 deficit on Sunday for a 5-5 tie with the rebuilt SABR Magicians. AGF was defeated 7-4 by the improving defending champion Austin Senators, missing a chance to gain some ground. Baird Brain closed the gap on Billie’s Bashers with an 8-4 decision; they're now tied for fifth. The big move of the week was made by the Eastern Shore Birds, who trounced cellar-dwelling Jick’s Rays 10-2 to vault from seventh all the way to third. The Moscow Rats beat the Horse Field Hammers 9-3, moving to the fringes of playoff contention. Thirteen teams are now bunched within a dozen games of second place, so anything can happen. I'm fortunate to have a little cushion, as my team is awful right now.

The standings, with almost a third of the regular season complete:

I was very lucky not to be trounced by the Fish Candy. Carlos Delgado, as anyone who visits this site knows only too well, had another terrible week; a decent Sunday pulled him up to .190/.308/.238, while Jim Thome has a sore thumb and sat out several games, getting just 8 AB. My other "slugger" Raffy Palmeiro disappeared to .182/.217/.227 — I have no idea how I won four hitting categories. Now Matt Lawton and Kenny Lofton are hurt, both leaving in the middle of yesterday's games. In fantasy baseball, just like the real thing, no matter how good your roster is, you still need some luck — even if it’s only avoiding the bad variety.

My pitching, which had been the strength of the team, was horrible. Billy Wagner’s on the DL, and the Terry Adams experiment was short-lived. (What was I thinking? That it cost me “only” Tom Gordon. D'oh!) I’m sure I took a big hit in the unofficial Roto standings, but in Head-to-Head play, an ERA of 6.33 and a WHIP of 1.75 are no worse than losing those categories by a whisker, so it’s probably a good thing that almost all my starters blew up in the same week. IP and W were my only chances to earn any pitching points, and thankfully, Freddy Garcia came through late Sunday afternoon to salvage the tie.

In other words, the Walrus really dodged a bullet to remain unbeaten in seven matchups this year. It may be that some of my early-season overachievers on the mound (Marquis, Alvarez, Silva, Madson, Arroyo) were simply flukes, and I’ll soon come back to the pack with a resounding thud. I fear that Bobby Abreu (.435/.581/.696 and a couple of SB) will soon grow tired of carrying this team, so my "best" hitters better wake up. I'm trying, without much confidence, to rally the troops for the impending battle with K-Town.

The Pistol Nine smoked the ball this week, winning all 6 hitting categories, but only winning saves on the pitching side of things for a 7-5 'win' over the Wannabes.

I feel like my team is overachieving, but yet I'm only in 6th. This league is tough.

After another week of the Capers' fall from grace, formerly promising pitchers R.A. Dickey and Terry Adams were unceremoniously let go in what hopefully *won't* be seen as the Barfield's very own Andersen for Bagwell...

It's starting to feel wrong to give awards based on positive value, but here goes...

BONDS - This award goes to, finally ;-) , A.J. Pierzynski. Unfortunately, his strong week was limited to 17 AB , but they were enough to beat out Luis Matos and Eric Young for this week's award. His final line was - 1/6/0/.353/.389/.588

NEIFI - R/RBI/SB numbers of 3/2/2 kept Renteria and his putrid .192/.192/.269 out of this spot, so I guess I'll give it to Jody Gerut, the one time BONDS of my team. His final line of 0/1/1/.154/.154/.192 in 26 AB is dissapointing to say the least...

PEDRO - Though my team's pitching line wouldn't make it seem possible, three guys put forth top notch efforts for me this week. If I had pciekd up Doug Davis in time for both of hsi starts there would ahve been three anyway. As it stands, I'll hand out two Pedros to newly acquired Jeremy Bonderman and Fransisco Cordero. Bonderman went 14.0/1/0/2.57/1.36/1.67 while Fransisco, Texas Ranger, went 2.2/0/2/0.00/1.12/- ... Oh, how I crave more innings for Fransisco...

LIMA - Possibly more for blown expectations than actual performance, I have to give this to Rodrigo Lopez. Until this week I had christened him best.....waiver pick-up.....ever! and things were looking up not only when he was asked to start, but when he carried a no-hitter into the 4th inning. Then he imploded. He finished with an ugly 4.2/0/0/11.57/1.50/0.50 line. Dishonorable mention to El Artista, Terry Adams,Rheal Cormier,R.A. Dickey, and Johan Santana who went bad in back-to-back starts... If only a couple of these dishonorable mentions put up average lines...*sigh*

I feel a little like Jim Mora; "You're talking about the PLAYOFFS?!?!?!' Nevertheless, it's nice to make the rundown of notable wins, even if this one came by two-thirds of an inning, three hundredths of a run's worth of ERA and 0.04 in WHIP. On to the week 7 awards!

MVH: Jose Cruz, having been a perennial contender for the other hitter's award, finally justified his spot on the roster with a spectacular .438/.609/1.063 line, with six runs, eight RBI and a stolen base.

LVH: This award, which has just changed its name from the Jose Cruz award, goes to Brian Roberts. He drove in one run, while hitting .105/.261/.158. Blech.

MVP: The whole starting rotation was awesome this week, but Brad Radke stands out for having been good over two starts. Thirteen innings, a win, an ERA of 3.46, WHIP of 1.08 and everyone's favourite K/BB ratio, INF.

LVP: Well, I suppose the whole rotation wasn't awesome, because Rodrigo Lopez got shelled in his first start of the season, going less than five innings while putting up an ERA in the tens. Oh well.

Next up, Jick's Rays, who are currently occupying standings real estate we Rats are all too familiar with. Beware the Rats.

Sorry for not posting roto standings last week. I was in El Lay and San Diego and away from my stats.

Last week, Mebion Glyndwyr set the all-time record for runs with 62, beating the old mark of 60. His overall stats were the 4th-best week ever in the Alomar Division. On a gloomier note, the Jicks Rays' Week 7 performance was the 7th-worst ever.
_snellville jone - Monday, May 24 2004 @ 02:23 PM EDT (#62763) #
Wow, am I reading those rankings correctly? Garces not on roids is 8th in the Roto standings, but 19th in the HTH standings? What horribly bad luck.

Speaking of luck, I went into Sunday down by 7 and 2/3 IP. I had one starter, Dontrelle, while K-Town had none. Dontrelle only lasted 5 innings and I had both Reitsma and Smoltz pitch an inning apiece. K-Town had Joe Nathan pitch an inning for the Twins in a blowout. So down by 4 outs, Francisco Rodriguez was the only pitcher that had yet to pitch.

He came in and got the final two outs in the seventh and went on to retire the Orioles in a shaky 8th.

Bonds: Konerko -- I don't know if I could come up with a better name for a hitter. Like Jack Sluggerson or something. .423/.516/.692, 7R and 9RBI.
Neifi: Broussard -- His first appearance here, so I'll go easy on him. .111/.238/.167, no RBI.
Pedro Hudson -- My only consistent starter thus far. 8IP, W, 1.13 ERA. K-Rod's 1 and 2/3 IP on Sunday gets honorable mention.
Lima Willis -- Dontrelle now has two Limas to go along with two Pedros. 2 starts, 9IP, 9ER.

Wow, am I reading those rankings correctly? Garces not on roids is 8th in the Roto standings, but 19th in the HTH standings? What horribly bad luck.

I checked my database, and it appears my calculations are correct. As you say, Garces has been incredibly unlucky. To wit:

He leads the world in RBI but has a record of just 4-3-0. The real killer has been the offensive rate stats, where Garces ranks 1st in AVG, 5th in OBP and 4th in SLG. Amazingly, his record in those categories is 7-14-0. He also has a combined record of 7-7-0 in ERA and WHIP despite very good overall numbers.

Since we're about 1/3 through the regular season schedule, I was thinking about posting some additional stats. I'll see what I can come up with by this evening.

I won every pitching ratio plus saves but lost everything else. That's disheartening. I didn't even do badly in any one offensive category, Baird Brain was just better across the board. I hate Mondays.

How do you get the cumulative roto stats? I'd like to see how Barfield is shaping up. I can't shake the notion that my success is due to smoke and mirrors. I'll need even more smoke and mirrors now that my best slugger, Richie Sexson, appears done.

A frustrating week for the Edmonton Decepticons as bad management robbed me of a 10-2 victory. Sitting Cory Lidle cost me a victory in WHIP and Cory's win was needed after my opponent managed to get two of his relievers to pick up Sunday victories. Friggin' Lidle. I don't think there's a more inconsistent starter in baseball. He either pitches absolute gems or gets blown out.

Decepticon Awards:
Bonds: Juan Uribe had a decent week. Solid ratios and 7 runs led my team. No one had a superhuman effort.
Neifi: Another horrible week (coupled with Uribe's new 2B eligibility) led to Mark DeRosa being waived. Beltran also had a horrible week. Thank God he's done with A's pitching for the year.
Pedro: Solid performances from multiple sources led to my best pitching performance since week one. Leading the charge were Buerhle and Myers. Even Ponson had a decent start.
Lima: Neal Cotts. My continuing attempt to get every White Sox pitcher was put on hold as Cotts was picked up, bombed by the Twins, then returned to the waiver wire.

Cristian,

I had intended to provide roto stats for Barfield from the get-go, but my life-away-from-baseball schedule has been hellish for several weeks. Now that things have slowed down a bit, I ought to be able to provide better coverage of the Barfield Division. So, keep an eye out for an update from me in the not-too-distant future.

Not! Last! Place!

The Archivists are continuing their ongoing struggle to finish in Not! Last! Place! This week was a lucky 8-4 win against an undermanned Capers squad. We had good run and RBI counts, but still managed to win average and OBP as well despite mediocre showings. The Archivist pitching, unusally, came through big to win a near-unprecedented four categories, including big wins in ERA, WHIP, and K/W.

BONDS - Two worthy candidated but only one can win. Mark Loretta's nine runs and .607 slugging takes a back seat to Carlos Lee, who has 4 R, 9 RBI, and hit .355/.375/.452. The 9 RBI led me to victory in RBI by just two.

NEIFI - Rafael Palmeiro has had a good year to date, but this past week a .182/.217/.227 finish with no runs scored and only one RBI probably cost me the SLG category.

PEDRO - He's gotta be leading the race for the NL Cy Young. He's old warhorse Tom Glavine, who did me proud with 15 innings of lights-out pitching this week. Only one win, but 6 8 4 4 0 6 against the Cards was followed by a titanic one-hit shutout of the Rockies. Honorable mention to Nate Robertson shutting down the Mariners (7 6 0 0 2 3), Jason Johnson also against the Mariners (8.1 7 4 3 1 7) and Chad Bradford's continuing fine work out of the pen. Thanks to Pistol Nine for losing faith in Bradford. :)

LIMA - Soon to be renamed the Hideo Nomo award. Nomo got hurt against Philly, which prevented him from doing more damage, but still posted a line of 1.1 2 1 1 0 1 and helped us lose the IP category. It was Nomo's second straight start of less than two innings.
_Rob Andrew - Tuesday, May 25 2004 @ 02:49 AM EDT (#62770) #
A 10-2 win pulled the Good Sports to within 6.5 games of the leading Ghost Man on Third. The final score betrays the closeness of most of the categories; the Sweaty Guys probably deserved a better fate.

Bonds: Mark Bellhorn, primarily on the strength of his counting stats (5 runs, 8 rbi). Alex Sanchez honorable mention for once again leading me to an easy win in the caught stealing category.
Leaders: Belliard 2, Clayton 1, Sanchez 1, Bellhorn 1, Ford 1, Podsednik 1

Neifi: It's really starting to look like Brad Hawpe was a waste of my high waiver priority.
Leaders: Scutaro 2, Hawpe 1, Piazza 1, Clayton 1, Segui, Everyone Who Played on Sunday 1

Pedro: Jason Schmidt threw 6000 pitches for the glory of the Good Sport. Best start this year by any pitcher under 6-10.
Leaders: Schmidt 3, Clemens 2.5, The Bullpen Collectively 1, Wilson 0.5

Lima: Roger Clemens, narrowly over Kevin Brown.
Leaders: Ligtenberg 3, Correia 1, Osborne 1, Schmidt 1, Clemens 1
