It's pretty remarkable that arguably the two best starting pitchers in the American League East have faced each other three times before Memorial Day. In their two previous matchups, Pedro Martinez has emerged victorious over Roy Halladay, by 4-1 and 4-2 counts. Today, Doc needs to be especially sharp to keep Pedro and the BoSox from winning their third straight game at Skydome and sending the Jays back into their home-field doldrums. After an encouraging start on Thursday night, the Jays have been let down by their bats and their bullpen in consecutive losses; today, Roy Halladay might need to do it all himself.
Heading off to the game soon. Can anyone say if the Dome is open or not?
I think Pedro threw 115 pitches in his last start. Let's hope he struggles like he often does after high pitch count games.
It is very weird for me today - I live less than five minutes' walk from the Dome, but here I am in a hotel room in beautiful downtown Sudbury (that's sarcasm, boys) on a slow dial link and about to watch the Jays on TV playing almost in my back yard.
I hear they are skipping Hentgen in the rotation - which is good news, I guess, but does anyone know if they are thinking of showcasing someone from Syracuse?
Here's hoping Roy's on his game today - I think Pedro's going to be extra tough today. If Halladay keeps the walks down, it might work out ok.

I can't believe this...on Sportsnet Pacific they're showing a repeat of an old rugby game. This is terrible.
Halladay starts with a couple of nice down-breaking fastballs low in the zone - called strike and two fouls. Encouraging - no balls.
Damon golfed a 1-2 pitch for a clean single, Roy immediately went after Bellhorn with more of that hard-breaking north-south stuff (he's been consistently low in the strike zone when he's looking for strikes) and got a 3-6 force. Too slow developing to have a chance at Bellhorn, who is fairly fast.
Roy's now keeping the ball out of Ortiz's power zone - not a bad idea, IMHO.

I feel your pain... I have pacific right now and none of the other regions... I actually wrote a complaint to their website and I advise you to do the same... maybe enough of those will get those bastards to NEVER do that again... blah blegh blugh.....

Justin, I found the same thing, first I too was in disbelief but I remembered a prediction I made late last yr. If the Jays are not successful the Sportsnet regions will have a look at their coverage schedule. I hope I am wrong and this is not the case, perhaps technical difficulties. But I can see the possibilites of not having weekend games if the demographics don't merit.
But they at least shoudl have looked at the weather forcast, its cloudy and cool in lotus land today.
Shite, damn you Rogers!!! This is the second Doc game in a row not broadcast. Damn you all to hell Rodgers!!!

For those of you without TV, from my comfy chair (actually a sofa I've moved into the middle of the hotel room), it looks like Roy is pretty much himself, but here in the second inning he's keeping the ball more up in the zone and trying to push the corners.
Pedro, well, he looked already in the zone in the first. Roy just fired a "hit me" right down the middle that Daubach couldn't hit. Youkilis bounces weakly back to Roy, and really, he's done very well. The RBI single by Ramirez in the first was barely high enough to be a strike.
Sounds like Millar is hurting - Foulds just said Youkilis may see more time than planned. Interesting ... I have FAAB money in my pool.
Hudson almost handcuffed himself on a slow bouncer, but still made the third out with an awkward throw.

The thing that bothers me the most is that on the previous telecasts they repeatedly mentioned that Rogers is televising all 4 games of the series. So naturally I planned my whole Sunday around watching the game, only to find that it's televised in every region except the Pacific. I can't believe they wouldn't televise the rugby at a different time.
Pedro's keeping it inside on Delgado - 3-0 (and Carlos just cleared his nostrils - gross! I thought that was only hockey players)
what happened to bill mueller??? DId he get hurt too?
Oh yeah, and back to sportsnet pacific... I thought that when they broadcasted the time of the broadcast as 10 am PT, that it meant that the pac region would get it too... counterintuitive that was... bastards.... way to alienate the westcoast fanbase....

3-2 on Delgado and he fouled off a ball that should have hit him inside, and on the next pitch looked absolutely terrible throwing the bat at an inside low corner change-up.
Carlos is pressing.

wow... they must like pond to dh him over phelps... thats a strange move to dh a guy with a 000 avg after 10 ab... geez
Pedro Martinez pitching motion often reminds me of Tony Fernandez lazy-looking sidearm looping tosses from short - both were/are deceptive. Pedro's pitches are moving even more in the strike zone here in the second than in the first. Hinske's swing was pretty solid, but a routine opposite field fly-out to left.
Martinez walks (WALKS!) Sparky and the something something something Pond's up (we NEED Simon to come up with the bases loaded so Faulds can say "the ducks are on the Pond" and get it over with.
Ponds lazy pop-up.
*Sigh*
At least it's a fast game ...

I think the Jays have to get some runs on the board soon to take some pressure off Halliday (not that he doesnt thrive off it)
why does anyone in the league feel the urge to run on kid cash?
Although I'd rather be watching it on tv, this isn't all bad. This is the first time I've ever listened to the FAN broadcast, after reading so much discussion about Tom and Jerry here on Battersbox. I like Jerry a lot, he conveys so much more information than Faulds does. How does their broadcasting rotation work?
oh yeah? how do you listen to the fan on a webcast? do you have to pay?
MLB has a promotion where if you give SI a four issue free tryout you get access to Gameday Radio all season. It sure beats hunting for a radio station that isn't blacked out. Of course, I'll be cancelling my SI subscription the moment issue four arrives.
thanks... I got it.... I far prefer Tom Cheek... Jerry is hogging the mike I must say...
Normally Jerry does a few innings and then Tom does a few innings....rinse and repeat
I'm just finishing up at the office -trying to decide whether to get down to the game. It's a bout a half hour to SkyDome. Normally I wouldn't just for the last 3 or 4 innings of a game, but if Pedro keeps pitching like this...
What do you guys think - worth it?
What do you guys think - worth it?
Youkilis drops a middling-difficult grounder from Wells - the scorer called it a hit - I hope that's not the only "hit" today from the Jays.
One out and Carlos gets another chance to look good (or not).

I think we are seeing the GIDP Carlos right now... Delgado needs to just stop caring... Maybe thats the problem...
All is forgiven Delgado

Now we are seeing why Pond has kicked around the minors for 10 years...Triple A appears to be his apex!

rather quiet here today....everyone must be listening to the game outside.

Sparky drives in Cat to make it 3-1.
I've been thinking. Given that Catalanotto gets on base at an awfully high clip, but doesn't hit for a lot of power, wouldn't it make sense to bat him leadoff, rather than Hudson? Don't get me wrong-I love Hudson, but it seems to me that his and Catalanotto might be more productive if they switched spots.

Halladay's thrown 120 pitches and the heart of the order is coming up for the Sox in the 8th. I'd pull Halladay here.
Bellhorn hits .179/.373/.256 against lefties and .262/.409/.476 against righties.
Ortiz (LH) follows Bellhorn.
I'd bring in De Los Santos or Kerscher first, and then bring in Frasor only if the lefty doesn't get the first two out.

Gameday doesnt have the most flattering picture of Fraser on it....
Continuing the thought.....
If there's 2 outs and Ramirez is up leave the lefty in as Daubauch and Veritek are on deck.

Man am I mad.
Everyone else except those of us in BC gets to watch this game. We have to see Rugby. :(
Oh well, Gameday isn't so bad. I'm not sure if I'd want to watch this part anyways. The bullpen trying to hold a two-run lead scares me to be quite honest.

VERY nice hammer curve on the outside corner to Daubach from Frasor - now two out, two on, and just Varitek to get. The close-up shot into the Jays' dugout showed some slightly worried faces. Hopefully the bullpen holds this one.
They pop up Varitek! I think they will actually win this one - provided they nail Ligtenberg to the bench in the 9th.

Timlin's in with a one-out F-Cat single aboard. Seeing as I have him on my fantasy team, I predict one inherited runner allowed, two walks and an ER all Mikey's own.
Ugly. V-W out at second trying to stretch a single to Damon's left - it wasn't close and I hope he has an excuse, because that's just plain dumb baserunning. Almost Carlos-like (or Tony Fernandez-like)
No...not the dreaded runner on third with one out situation.
Watching on Gameday, the pitch that Carlos stuck out on looked like it was at his shoes. What happened?
Adams (I presume) against the bottom of the order with a 2 run lead. This one has to get nailed down.
king Rat - was a breaking ball inside and it looked like delgado lapsed into golf mode
Due up: Youkilis, Crespo and Reese.
Adams has to get this one.
Adams has to get this one.
Adams has been up in the strike zone on his first two pitches. Too bad Sparky couldn't come up with the foul pop. Youkilis singles to left on the 0-2.
Buckle up, gents ...

whats going on with pond starting the past few games the jays need wins right now and this kid has yet to prove himself at the major league level
Who do you start instead of Pond? Dave Berg? Chad Hermanson?
Tailor-made DP ball to Gomez only gets the out at first after the short wild pitch / passed ball. Gotta get Reese!
Terry Adams now leads the MLB with 6 Wild Pitches...
2 outs - damon at the plate.......
What me....worried

Damon K's swinging - Jays win! Beat Pedro!! HLH back in the W column!!!
And !!!! just for good measure.
And !!!! just for good measure.
Splitting a series against the BoSox is just fine with me.
Jack, I would start Reed Johnson over Pond any day, personally. He hit .279 against righties last year, I don't really see why there's such a need to platoon him.
Terry K's Damon!!

Nice win today. I think there's a good pyschological effect from Halladay outpitching Pedro today. Or maybe more accurately, it would have had a bad effect if Halladay lost all 3 games against Pedro.
i think they have Pond playing so they can give Phelps a few days off.

With Phelps currently looking more like Rey Ordonez than a major league designated hitter, a couple of days off will hardly hurt him or the team.
Watching on Gameday, the pitch that Carlos stuck out on looked like it was at his shoes. What happened?
Timlin pounded him inside, inside, inside and the final pitch that looked like it was at his shoes was indeed a sharp slider at his shoes.
It's the same type of pitch Delgado has been swinging at for about two weeks now. With all the inside pitches he is flailing at, either he's got to start laying off of them altogether or else back up off the plate more. Both hits today were mistake pitches on the outer half of the plate. It looks almost impossible for him to hit a pitch on the inner half of the plate fair (let alone a pitch that almost hits him).
Obviously he is a talented hitter, but if he doesn't start making adjustments, he's going to see more of the same from absolutely every pitcher he faces.

Well, heres what I decided out here on the westcoast. If Sprotsnet Pacific is going to drop Jays games from time to time or whatever the hell they choose to do-then I'm not going to watch Sportsnet sports. I an now into the TSN gang which I left because of the ease of just not changing the channel after the game.
Justin, I will write them later today and I am going to organise my fellow baseball fanatics to do the same.
Rodgers might own this team but they are still bloody well my team too and I do not appreaciate being jacked around, most especially a game started by the reigning Cy Young Champ.

I just noticed the Jays have only one less win than the Orioles, though they have six more losses. I suspect the gap will be bridged and the Jays will take third before the AS break.
Lefty, I sent them a quick note myself on their feedback form, just asking for an explanation. While I'd love to order up Extra Innings, I just don't have that kind of cash. It was such a great game, even without the visuals, I'm just disappointed I wasn't able to fully enjoy it.

Check out what Ben Sheets is doing today ... Is he making the leap to stud starter this year? I was praying that JP would have somehow pulled off that trade to bring Sheets here in the off-season. I know, I know, the talks never got that serious, but dreaming can be nice.

I'm glad I have the digital package because the game wasn't shown on SNP. I have no idea why they would show Rugby and not Baseball.
As for Sheets, JP offered O-Dog for him and the Brew said no. O-Dog was also offered for R. Soriano and the M's said no.

Well, I'm sure Roy Halladay is happy to have O-Dog's glove back there.
They need to stop playing the commercials, music, and everything else so loud. I shouldn't have to shout to talk to the person next to me during the inning break.
Anyway, it was cool hearing the entire non-Boston part of the crowd chanting "Pedro" right after the Delgado homerun. Even the old people, the ones who told some Bosox fans to be quiet in the third inning, joined in.
Also, before the game, Johnny Damon was throwing balls up to the kids and congratulating them if they made a nice catch, or playfully taunting them if they didn't. I like him better now.
Did the O-Drum make it? I kept looking in 518, but didn't see anything.

I was at the game and didn't hear the drum either... I told my buddies about it all the way there and they thought I was a nut.
The drum definately wasn't there because on Thursday we had it there and Coach came up to tell us he could hear it down in the 100-level.
it was cool hearing the entire non-Boston part of the crowd chanting "Pedro"
When that started, I turned to my dad and said, "wow, did we just walk into a ballpark?" It was great.
In the first inning I was slightly concerned about Doc. It didn't seem as though he had his control. On Damon's leadoff single he had two strikes and on the 1-2 pitch kept the ball over a large portion of the plate, which lead to the hit. Then later in that inning he enduced a pop-fly but substantially missed his spot, as Cash was lined up outside and the pitch came on the inner half of the plate. The start was also unlike many of his best games where the vast majority of outs seem to come on groundballs (by virtue of hitters chasing his devistating breaking pitches)...Instead there were at least half a dozen L-O-N-G foulballs into the stands. Last observation, on Ortiz' last AB vs. Halladay, he was thrown 6 consecutive fastballs, ranging from 93-95 (!!!). At this point Halladay was over the 100 pitch mark so I was very impressed with his stamina/velocity but with his arsenal of breaking/off-speed stuff, what would have provoked the display of power?
Regardless, it was a display of dominent pitching on both sides and it was lots of fun to watch.

Yeah - today was my first time up at 518 (normally I take my cheap seat ticket and park behind home plate - I love the ushers...) but there wasn't much happening. In any event, the Jays won, Doc was masterful, Delgado's looking better and I got a bobblehead and pizza. If only every day were like this...

I was in section 231. I don't like to take credit, but my wife did yell, "Hey, Pedro, you've got a no-hitter going!"
That was the beginning of the end.
I don't know if everyone saw this - COMN for a chance to go golfing with Richard Griffin.
I wonder if he advocates 'small ball' on the golf course...

Oddly enough, Griffin rigidly adheres to a walks-and-power approach to golf.

Bonjour,
No O Drum today. It's funny because I didn't make the game today because I had a rugby game. Hilarious. I can't believe SNP would run a rugby game over Doc vs. Pedro. That is just nuts.

did you see when he tossed one up and it missed and hit the facing? When he was getting jeered for it, he turned around and grabbed his "groin area" and flipped the bird... not that great of a role model for the kids.

This from Gordon Edes' Boston Globe baseball column today:
To the growing list of Red Sox literature comes a new offering from Rob Bradford of the Lowell Sun: "Chasing Steinbrenner," which is due to hit bookstores by the end of the month. Bradford expanded his story to include the Blue Jays and their GM, J.P. Ricciardi, and one of the best parts is his recounting from the inside how the Jays and Sox approached the amateur draft. Bradford clearly enjoyed special access to the Sox as well, and while he curiously steers clear from some of last summer's major controversies -- the Manny Ramirez benching in Chicago and Grady Little's ouster -- he offers some great detail on a couple of Sox trades, as well as an informed look at the cadre of young assistants surrounding GM Theo Epstein.

I was in 518 with my buddies again, warned them the drum probably wouldn't make it as BD said last time. Luckily the 31K at the dome were actually loud and pro-jay. I was amazed. Of all the days to not have the drum, we get a healthy crowd like that to balance out, I was in paradise. When the place was on their feet and yelling on Adam's last pitch, I haven't experienced that since.... well a long time anyways. Great game.
So, when can the O-Drum make its way to 518 again? The Twin's crowd will seem pretty week compared to the 31k today, we will have to call upon the power of the O-Drum and HAMMER OF WISDOM to get the crowd into it.
Just let me know when the drum will be there and so will I.

JKCL: Oh yeah, I totally agree about the Skydome security and Youkilis' home run ball. What a joke.
I think the Dome can be an all right place to watch a game--even if we're stuck with artificial turf and less-than-inspiring design--but the place is often way too subdued. When 30,000+ fans come out (who are willing to make a bit of noise), it starts to get fun. But with attendance mired in the low twenties and below, the experience is pretty bland. It sounds as though today's game was exciting though.

Hey JKCL,
Thanks for the synopsis of the game. Nice job. I haven't seen the highlights because Sportsnets banned on my BC television now except when they have a game on.
All the best.

Heavy handed security is right.
I was sitting near the Jays bullpen today, and there were some very loud, insistent fans yelling "let's go catalanatto" until he acknowledged them. Inspired, they quickly worked their way through Vernon, Reed, and Hinske. Hilarious stuff. And then they got told to shut up by security. What a bunch of wet blankets. Apparently fun is illegal in the Dome.
There were some other highlights:
- endless taunting of Brian Daubach for anything and everything he did and didn't do (and simply for not being Manny Ramirez)
- chanting at Carlos to bunt, and being rewarded with a home run
- lots of cheering for Pizza each time Halladay got a 2-strike count on someone (and loud, loud cheering for Frasor finally nailing down the 7th K)
In all seriousness, it was great seeing Frasor and Adams come out and and slam the door hard in the 8th and 9th today.

In all seriousness, it was great seeing Frasor and Adams come out and and slam the door hard in the 8th and 9th today.
I was watching the Sox broadcast on MLT.TV and I'm not sure everyone's stories are straight about Youkilis HR ball. Two ladies caught the ball-not a guy. The Sox field reporter went up there to interview them about how they caught it (it was fairly dumb-one lady said "it was coming at my head so I put my bag up and it fell in my friend's lap). The Sox reporter brought two balls autgraphed by Pedro as a thanks for giving Youkilis his ball-there was no forcing by Jays security. The ladies made out just fine. The only thing the broadcast mentioned was that Jays security then took it from the Sox reporter to deliver it to the dugout. I suppose a little unnecessary, but it seems to be blown out of proportion.
Frasor's been pretty good so far but his incredibly straight fastball scares me. It has no movement whatsoever. Oh well, as long as he can continue to paint corners with it and mix in his good breaking pitch he should be fine. Still he doesn't have a large margin for error in my opinion.
When the place was on their feet and yelling on Adam's last pitch, I haven't experienced that since.... well a long time anyways. Great game.
Yeah. The game last year where HLH won like the last game of the season (or maybe his last start, I can't remember) was sort of like that at the end.
RE: Pedro turning to look at the jumbotron -- I had the impression at the time that he was wondering where the pitch was when Delgado hit it (well up and over the outside part of the plate if I recall). On a related note, the only time I noticed Pedro step off the mound enough to walk around on the carpet (not the dirt) -- I mean apart from defensive plays that require backing up a base or whatever -- was when the fans really got into the "pedro" chant at some point after the HR. Maybe it got to him; a hopeful sign.
