The Jays' top two farm clubs muscled their way to victories, while the lower clubs lost by an aggregate of 32-7!! Together, the four games were a microcosm of the parent club's season to date:

Rochester 4 at Syracuse 5

boxscore

I guess it wasn't a good day to be a Red Wing (in any league) yesterday. Simon Pond (2-2, 2 BB) and Gabe Gross (2-4) hit solo home runs for the Syracuse SkyChiefs, who edged Minnesota's Triple-A affiliate at P&C Park. Rochester took an early three-run lead when Josh Rabe singled and scored in the second inning and Brian Simmons and Chris Heintz belted solo homers in the fourth off of spot-starter Josue Matos (4.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 2 HR). The Chiefs' first hit didn't come until the fourth inning, when Pond and Gross crushed their solo homers to right field. Syracuse added three more runs in the fifth. Noah Hall singled and scored on Russ Adams' double down the right-field line. Shawn Fagan singled, moving Adams to third, and the two were plated on back-to-back RBI-singles by Alex Rios (1-3, BB) and Pond.

Josh Towers, having agreed a day earlier to his reassignment, stepped on the mound in relief of Matos with two outs in the fifth. Towers' only blemish through three and a third innings (1 H, 0 BB, 1 SO) came on a no-doubter off the bat of New Westminster's Justin Morneau in the eighth, cutting Syracuse's lead to one. Aquilino Lopez shut the Wings down in the ninth (0 H, 0 BB, 2 SO) for his second save since being optioned to Syracuse. Catcher Guillermo Quiroz had the day off. Morneau (2-4, HR) -- the International League's hottest hitter, at .402/.453/.736 -- should be playing on a Major League ball-field-near-you by the time Pond and Co. are digging for gold in Athens.

Binghamton 3 at New Hampshire 5

boxscore

The Fisher Cats pulled to within a half game of Binghamton in the Eastern League's Northern Division. John-Ford Griffin singled home Danny Solano for the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the F-Cats topped the B-Mets at Gill Stadium. New Hampshire scored 3 runs on four hits in the seventh to make a winner out of starter Cam Reimers, who's now a perfect 3-0 on the season. Reimers allowed 3 hits over 7 innings. Dan Jackson pitched 2 innings of scoreless relief to earn his 2nd save. The Fisher Cats took a 1-0 lead in the 1st on a sacrifice fly by Dominic Rich. Solano, who had doubled, scored from third on the fly to center field. Binghamton took a 3-1 lead in the 6th when, with two outs and with the bases loaded, Josh Pressley singled up the middle. All three runners scored when the ball was bobbled in the outfield. In the bottom of the 7th, New Hampshire had singles by Justin Singleton, Tyrell Godwin, and the aforementioned Solano, before Griffin singled in the winning run off reliever Tim Lavigne. The Cats added an insurance run in the 8th, as rightfielder Maikel Jova homered off Shawn Sedlacek.

Solano (2-3, 2 R, BB), Godwin (2-5) and Griffin keyed an offense which had been anaemic up until yesterday. It was only Griffin's second multi-hit game of the year. After giving up the winning home run Friday night, Erik Kratz returned to his catching duties, reaching base twice (H, BB). New Hampshire will try to win the four-game set today (1:05), as Syracuse-bound Dustin McGowan takes the mound for his final Double-A start against Binghamton's Jose Diaz, another highly touted righty. Live coverage of the game starts at 12:30 on the Fisher Cats Radio Network, WKXL.

St. Lucie 22 at Dunedin 5

boxscore

In a rare Sunshine State thrashing, Omar Malave saw his D-Jays give up 22 runs (21 earned) on 19 hits to the Mets High-A affiliate. Southpaw Kurt Isenberg made it out of the first inning without giving up a run, but didn't fare as well in the second. In fact, he was pulled after recording only one out in the second frame. He had only allowed two hits, a walk, (2 SO, 3 ER), and committed two errors, but it remains to be seen if Isenberg was pulled due to precautionary, or other, reasons. In any event, Santo Valdez entered the game and surrendered five runs of his own in the inning, giving St. Lucie an early 8-0 lead. The Mets would never look back. For good measure, the Mets put up a nine-spot on the board in the fourth inning. On the wrong side of a 16-run differential after four innings, Dunedin's bullpen gave up five more runs in the fifth and sixth, before righties Jamie Vermilyea and Andy Torres threw three innings of shutout ball to keep St. Lucie's run total at 22.

As you would expect, Dunedin's offense couldn't quite keep up with their counterparts' pace. In the losing effort, Jayce Tingler (3-5, 2 R) and Ron Davenport (3-5, 2 RBI) had three hits apiece, while Carlo Cota (2-4, BB) and Miguel Negron (1-3, 2 BB, 0 K) each reached base on three occasions. Valdez (1.2 IP, 10 H, 12 R, 11 ER) was tagged with the loss for the D-Jays, whose team ERA soared from 3.38 to 4.12, fourth worst in the FSL, after the defeat. Dunedin hopes to bounce back today in the third game of the four-game series. We'll see if Vito Chiaravalotti is back in DH slot, after missing the last two games.

Charleston 2 at Delmarva 10

boxscore

While teammates (and 2003 co-draftees) Shaun Marcum, Justin James, and Tom Mastny have left strong indicators of their readiness for promotions to High-A, Danny Core has had only marginal success thus far. Yesterday, Core allowed three runs in the first, and seven runs in total (5 BB, 3 SO, 3 HR), during his 4 2/3 innings of work. Joaquin Canizal and Brad Esarey threw 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief, but Mark Sopko allowed two solo home runs in the ninth.

The Alley Cat mojo must have run dry, as Chaleston couldn't escape an early five run deficit, scoring only two runs in the lop-sided loss to the Shorebirds. The Cats' sole production came from Willie Rivera, who had an RBI-single in the third, and Clint Johnston, who smacked a solo homer in the ninth. Catcher Joey Wolfe reached base three times (2-3, 1 BB), while Ryan Roberts (0-4, K) continued to cool down. Charleston will try to salvage a series split today.

Links of the Day

1. Kevin Gray has a preview of the highly anticipated McGowan v Diaz matchup. (Union-Leader)

2. Matt Michael has another great SkyChiefs report, in 'Hot at the Top'. (Post-Standard)

3. JP Ricciardi's trip to Oklahoma dragged on an extra day, as the Bedlam Series pitted No. 15 Oklahoma against Oklahoma State yesterday (after a rainout on Friday). More importantly, 6'5" power lefty David Purcey, speculated to be a potential 2004 first-round draft choice for the Jays, took the mound for the Sooners.

4. As noted in other threads, Bob File begins his Syracuse rehab assignment today. To make room for File (as well as McGowan), Bruce Chen was dealt to the Orioles for a player to be named later.

Is there an official Batters Box minor league player of the month award for April? Looks like Banks wins on points if there is.

Vito's recent slump, followed by two days off, makes me wonder if his elbow is bothering him again.

A few things I'm not understanding:

1) Chen was on the DL (fake) til a while ago, how was room made for him on the roster?

2) Nunley and Valdez have pitched for Dunedin recently? how was room made for him?

Poor Valdez's line of 1.2 10 12 11 2 1 is the worst line I think I've ever seen from a relief pitcher.

To be entirely fair regarding Purcey, the only speculation about him being the Jays' choice comes from me, and I know d***-all about the draft.

Is Miguel Negron having a breakout season? I mean, he's certainly still young enough to make himself into a prospect. Wouldn't that be interesting?

I wanted to go to the Fisher Cats game today and see Dustin McGowan's last game as a Fisher Cat, maybe, but I just couldn't go. But I'm listening to it online and in the first it isn't looking good. 2 men in scoring position and no outs I believe.

Well, McGowan is showing what he's made of. After letting up two hits with runners on 3rd and second, McGowan came back and struck out the side. No runs scored.
_Chris H - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 01:22 PM EDT (#68183) #
I wouldnt be surprised if JP was also looking at Josh Fields, 3B of Oklahoma State. Baseball America's mid-season report had Fields as the 19th-ranked college prospect.
_R Billie - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 01:36 PM EDT (#68184) #
Regarding Jose Diaz, listening to the game it's clear why he hasn't given up a hit in 14 innings. It's pretty hard to give up hits when you struggle to throw strikes. It's kind of like the Vince Perkins effect. He's all over the place so he's hard to hit but if he starts putting the ball over the plate more often then he'd start giving up more hits.
_goatboy - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 01:39 PM EDT (#68185) #
Josh Fields would make more sense to me than David Purcey
Purcey does have a good arm but I have a couple of concerns about him
firstly it is reported that he struggles with his control & overall mechanics, add to this is a concern about his weight he is currently
listed at 240. If the jays draft Fields they will finally be addressing one of my pet peeves, that being the lack of third base
prospects within the system.
_R Billie - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 01:44 PM EDT (#68186) #
Fields isn't really a first round type pick though. He's only ranked that high because there's a lack of true quality hitters in the college ranks. Fields is decent and would probably be an OK everyday player, his only real plus being power. Maybe a second or third rounder.
Coach - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 01:46 PM EDT (#68187) #
Diaz walked the first four batters; the patient Matt Logan got the first RBI without swinging at a pitch. After a JFG swinging strikeout, Aaron Hill (dropped from third to sixth in the order) drove in the second run with a sac fly to CF, then catcher Jose Umbria singled to right to plate Rich and Mikael Jova made it 4-0 with a single up the middle.

The bat-around inning has to be great for team confidence, and it's a nice cushion for McGowan.

I agree Fields isn't a first round pick. If the jays were to
take him I think it would be with the supplemental first round
pick or if he is still around with their second round pick.

McGowan has struggled out there. Despite his sparkling stats he really seems to work hard to get through games. The last couple of games I've listened to have had him going deep into counts and throwing a lot of pitches. Going to AAA it's clear that his priority in addition to sharpening his command and mixing his pitches better will be to resolve at bats faster and keep his pitch counts down. It's not necessary to live on the corners with his stuff as long as he changes speed and inside/outside location regularly.

Just like the Jays, you couldn't expect the Fisher Cats' hitting woes to continue indefinitely. They came out of that 5-for-52 stretch with 10 hits yesterday and are having a lot of fun at the plate today.

I blame Steve Z and John and their recaps.

Don't forget Gerry and "Gideon" -- it's a team effort, and Jordan's going to be doing his monthly reviews, too.

How is it that Dominic Rich got a bad rep defensively

No idea, goatboy. That nifty play he made last inning got the announcers excited, and he was flawless when I saw him, including a tremendous vertical leap to rob an Erie hitter of a double. Rich, who led the FSL in hitting two years ago, suffered through a lot of nagging injuries last season and fell off the radar for a lot of prospect-watchers. Whether it's with the Jays or another organization, I still think he's a future big-leaguer.
_Rob - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 02:27 PM EDT (#68202) #

Is Miguel Negron having a breakout season? I mean, he's certainly still young enough to make himself into a prospect. Wouldn't that be interesting?

Considering that he's tied for the team lead in HR (3), and tied with Big Vito with 10 BB (Tingler has 17), Negron is exhibiting a breakthrough -- albeit, he hasn't reached Jordan's arbitrary 100-AB yet.

_R Billie - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 02:57 PM EDT (#68216) #
Hmm. Grand slam given up by McGowan after a two run homer earlier in the inning. As I said earlier, McGowan is working really hard to each batter and it doesn't matter how good your stuff is, eventually it will catch up to you if every batter faced is a marathon.

Coach - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 03:00 PM EDT (#68218) #
Six earned runs in 4.1 IP is not a pretty line for McGowan. I wonder if his concentration was 100% there, or if he was thinking ahead to his next start, which everyone assumed would be in AAA.
_goatboy - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 03:04 PM EDT (#68219) #
this does change anything, it one bad outing and McGowan is still
SYRACUSE bound
_R Billie - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 03:06 PM EDT (#68220) #
I don't know if it was a matter of concentration so much as being simply fatigued. The first few innings he averaged about 20 pitches which is quite high. I think Binghamton just waited him out and he finally couldn't come back from falling behind batters.
_Sneeps - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 03:48 PM EDT (#68221) #
The FisherCats had an 8-0 lead after 2, and now they are losing 9-8.

How?

McGowan gave up 2 homers today, after giving up 1 all of last season. New Hampshire's ballpark is supposed to be a pitcher's haven. Was the wind blowing out a gale today?
Mike Green - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 09:33 PM EDT (#68223) #
The Alley-Cats rallied for 6 runs in the ninth to avert an organizational sweep today. Patience was the order of the day, as the Cats drew 8 walks, with Ryan Roberts leading the way by reaching base 4 times.
_Steve Z - Sunday, May 02 2004 @ 09:45 PM EDT (#68224) #
Perhaps we were too quick in guaranteeing McGowan's promotion after today's start. Kevin Gray's column on Friday stopped short of a confirmation:

The 22-year-old Georgia native hadn't yet been given the official word from Toronto management. That will come Sunday if Scott phones Fisher Cats manager Mike Basso.

Today's disappointing outing might have set the timetable back by a couple weeks, although to be fair, it was McGowan's first minor setback since climbing to AA last year.
_R Billie - Monday, May 03 2004 @ 11:51 AM EDT (#68225) #
There was a pretty strong wind blowing out to right field yesterday. And at least one of the homeruns was hit by a very light hitter. But I don't think the wind can be blamed for the tons of pitches and several walks McGowan gave up. It was just a bad day at the office.

I do think McGowan's game isn't nearly as polished as it could be and that is both good and bad news. There is still lots of room for improvement but I don't think he's as close to the big leagues as it might have seemed. I would be surprised to see him up before September and even then they might wait until next spring. David Bush on the other hand looks very close...his stuff isn't as good as McGowan's obviously but he doesn't have much more to learn in the minors. I think he could come up any time after mid-season should the Jays need a starter.
