In this thread I will discredit every excuse that you use to not come out to the SkyDome to see your Toronto Blue Jays, especially now that the team seems to have found its wheels. Hit me with your best shots!

From last night's game thread:

Parking is too expensive: You're parking in the wrong place. The lot that Bird Droppings mentioned (under the office building at Front and Blue Jays Way, around the back) is literally a two minute walk from the Dome's gates, it's only $5, and last year I can remember exactly one time that it was full -- when some convention was in town. There's another $5 lot a further five minutes down Front, across from the convention centre.

In addition, a number of restaurants around Union Station are offering free parking or $1 or $2 parking at the SkyDome itself when you purchase a meal. I saw half a dozen signs to that effect a couple of weeks ago when I was out walking down there, unfortunately the only specific one I can remember was at Shopsy's. But hey, have some Shopsy's before the game and then park for a dollar under the Dome.

Concessions are too expensive: I agree. But aside from alcohol, you can freely bring in your own. The rules are easy to follow: no glass bottles, no cans, no bottles over one litre, no coolers, no large backpacks. So hit the Dollar Store and load up on 750mL Jolts or whatever you drink, buy a ten pound bag of peanuts and grab a dog from a vendor outside (hint: the further from the Dome you get, the cheaper the dogs are). I like the vendor down in the walkway between the subway and GO stations at Union. Anyone else have a favourite to reccomend?

The Dome stinks: In what way? Sightlines? Hell no, virtually every seat in the Dome is good. The upper deck cheap seats are fantastic, especially in the infield (and with attendance the way it is, there's no way they'll sell you an upper deck ticket out of the infield). The sections behind home plate are fabulous. Field level seats are fabulous. Frankly, the only seats I would label as non-fabulous are the Level of Excellence seats on the upper deck past the foul pole -- but if you're sitting in those seats, it means that the Dome is full.

Bad ambience? That's because you are not there, helping me to cheer on the Jays. Let's face it: I am one man, and cannot do it all by myself. So I attribute the bad ambience to your non-attendance. If you came out with me, it would be better. You have only yourself to blame on that one, sport. Well, maybe you could blame your friends, too -- get them to come out!

Lame canned sound effects and music? You'll notice that when the fans get going (which doesn't happen much, again because you are not coming out), they lay off the effects and let the fans do their thing. One game this year we managed to get the slow clap going in virtually every two-strike situation, and they didn't play the taped slow-clap drum once. They didn't need to. They play the effects when we are not helping.

What have I missed? Give me your excuses so I may pulverize them! The Jays need you there for their next homestand, and Cheer Club has declared that Monday, May 3rd is to be the Night Of Incredible Noise. The team is fired up right now, and we need to show them how much we appreciate it.

Send me an e-mail if you want to join in the madness, and we'll figure out tickets.

By the way, "I live in Moose Factory / Mongolia / the U.K. / somewhere far from Toronto" is a valid excuse that I will accept. I also know, deep in my heart, that those of you in far-flung locales would not hesitate to attend every game you could if you were in Toronto.

Break dancers are preventing you from going to the dome?

That sounds like the plot of a very warped NES game.

Seriously, Jim, the only reason that you will not come out to the games at SkyDome and support your Toronto Blue Jays is that you do not like what happens in between innings?

Hate to tell you, man, I can fix that for you:

When the inning ends, stand up and walk into the concourse. Then, about three minutes later, walk back to your seat.

Alternately, turn to the person next to you and have a conversation about the game.

Now you have to come out.

I sympathize, by the way: last year I realized that I was wasting too many brain cycles on keeping track of the sub in the Mr. Sub Hat Shuffle, so now I deliberately turn my eyes away from the screen so I don't know where the damn sub is hiding. That way, I don't care, and I am not compelled to stare at the JumboTron.

I think the In-Game Host is a bit of a tool too, but take it for what it is: Extra entertainment for the casual fan. Assuming that you are a "serious" baseball fan, who doesn't need distractions, just ignore him. It's not like he's interfering with the game, he does his thing between innings.

That said, it would be cool if the marketing folks came up with better between-innings entertainment. They may be improving: this year's opening-day pre-game was quite a bit better than last year's.

I think the break dancers are cool. And if enough of us who think the wave is pathetic turn out, it won't happen.

I'll take this opportunity to pass on and second a complaint from a friend of mine: the audio volume at the Dome is too high. I don't mean the often semi-comatose fans, of course: I mean the waves of noise crashing down from the speakers, especially for relatively trivial stuff like between-inning promotions, stroll-to-the-plate music, and the incessant foul-ball sound effects that haven't been replaced since 1991. This kind of thing is worse at NHL games, of course, where you have to yell at the person next to you in order to hold a conversation, but it's getting bad at the Dome as well. I suppose I'm now Officially Old if I'm saying "Turn down that racket!", but volume for the sake of sheer volume doesn't do anyone any good. Our four cents.
Craig B - Tuesday, April 27 2004 @ 12:16 PM EDT (#69349) #
Well, I like the wave. Maybe it's just me.

I like the vendor down in the walkway between the subway and GO stations at Union. Anyone else have a favourite to recommend?

That guy is awesome - the best one close to the Dome. My favourite, though, is to hit the Harvey's in Union just before the Skywalk, and grab a burger or a chicken sandwich and some fries to eat on my walk over. (You can also take Harvey's into the game). Definitely means I eat less at the game, and ever-so-slightly less "mysterious" than hot dogs.

By the way, popcorn is also a great thing to take. They sell *fresh* popcorn at the variety store on the concourse level of Union station (head through the doors from the subway into the GO station, turn right, it's just past the McDonalds and on the way to the Skywalk to the Dome) and it's really good. They'll let you bring the bag in, no problem.

Maybe I'm just not sitting below the speakers this year, but I've had the impression that things are just not as loud now.

I will admit that the terrible acoustics when the Dome is closed leads to all the ads on the JumboTron sounding like "Mrwahalala ooomlaffffffaaaaaa!"

Again, though, when the crowd is making the noise, they lay off of the tapes. So not coming out (and coming out but not cheering) directly contributes to this problem.

Now you have to come out.

Best hot dog vendor in the city?

That's easy. Directly out front of Robarts Library on the U of T campus (St. George & Harbord). $2 for a hot dog or an Italian sausage. Cooked to perfection, every condiment you could want and usually a nice chat with the Polish woman who runs it.

My excuse is that I'm a university student (for four more days) who has under $150 in his bank account. Next $2 Tuesday though, I'm there.

I had never tried the popcorn at Union Fruit Market. I suppose now I'll have to. It's like a buck and a quarter, right?

At Coach's urging, I tried the sushi at the Dome last game. I was surprised by its excellence. And while it was expensive, it was sushi-expensive, not SkyDome-expensive.

I think Jim's more opposed to the way that they introduce the Toronto Tidal Wave as one of their audience participation encouragements between innings than the Wave itself.

The Wave is always better when the fans get it going.

I'll take this opportunity to pass on and second a complaint from a friend of mine: the audio volume at the Dome is too high.

I only watch the games on TV (I have the acceptable distance excuse) but the level of noise should be proportional to the size of the crowd. If a place is relatively empty there's no need for it to be very loud.

Minor league games are the same way.

The drum (if Bird Droppings is coming -- drop me a line, fella), the Big Blue Horn, unless JKCL comes out, and the now full-capacity Cheer Club Lungs.

Any other suggestions? The upside of lungs is that they are versatile, unlike the horn that can make either a low howl or a high howl.

I am new to this site so I do not know if this has
been discussed yet but does anyone know the status
of Francisco Rosario. He was pulled after 1 2/3 innings
of his last scheduled start with a rather vague muscle
sorness problem. It was not mentioned where this muscle
sorness was elbow, sholder, abdomen? Then he was pulled
from his last start and Vince Perkins started instead.
So what's the verdict, obviously he has taken a step
backwards but just how far.

Waterloo. I'd have to take the 2 hour bus ride each way, which is expensive and boring. It'd be different if I had a car, but I don't, so...

Let me mention that I'm also against the horn, for the reason that it's not inclusive, nor does it engender more noise. It's just piercing.
Dave Till - Tuesday, April 27 2004 @ 02:22 PM EDT (#69370) #
There are two main reasons I don't go to games more often:

1. I like to multitask - I enjoy baseball best when I have it on in the background while I do other stuff.

2. The seats aren't comfortable. I'm a big guy (nearly 6'3") and am rapidly approaching middle age (if I'm not there already). If I watch a baseball game, my knees are basically pinned to the back of the chair in front of me for three hours, forcing me to sit in an awkward position. I went to a game during the last home stand, and had a sore back for two days. (When I go to a game by myself, I alleviate this problem by buying a cheap seat and moving up a few rows until I can find a space to myself. As long as I don't go too far back, the ushers never complain.)

Here's a tip for thems down on their luck, money wise. A friend who works in the area tells me that at the Gateway shop in Cumberland Terrace at Bay and Bloor the propieter will give tickets away that he has recieved from corporate suits. Huzza the shopkeep. I've never been, but if someone could look into to it we could be sitting on a gold mine - one which we would be very careful not to abuse, of course.

With regard to weekend series, I can make no promises, not even that I'll try. But I'll try to try.

A gong would really be something. Cowbells, plural, would also be neat; one cowbell ain't gonna cut it.

I like the idea of a loud Dome and having a beat in the stadium would be cool but like Bill, I don't want to sit close to a bass drum. Speaking from experience, it's not fun after 2 hours and little kids spontaneously bust out into tears. I guarantee that you'll have a complainer in the first 10 minutes and an usher will boot you. Whether you're within your rights to bring it in or not, the SkyDome ushers are ultra-sensitive when it comes to customer complaints.

If you do want to bang your drum for the entire game, you might have better success if you pre-arrange with the ushers to sit the drum in one of the empty sections.

A good idea for cheap noisemakers are to get a plastic windsheild fluid jugs or something similar and fill it will screws, pennies, etc and shake 'em. I'm not sure if they would be allowed in though because they can be filled with water and used as prjectiles. If all else fails, you can always just bang your seat up and down. Sometimes people do that in the 100 level outfield and you can hear it pretty good in 500 behind home.

I too have never been to a blue jays game.

Mostly because I live in BC and have for my entire life. One day I'll get out there though, I hope.

I live in Alberta and always attend the Seattle series, but that's it. Haven't been to the dome *yet*, but it's a short term goal with the fiancee.

The first Jays game I attended was an exhibition match between the Tigers and the Jays in Vancouver at BC Place in 93 (I think). Anyone else remember/go to this?

Living in LA, the only game I can make this year in Toronto is the final game or two of the season against the Yankees. My good friend is getting married in Toronto on Thanksgiving weekend so I figure if I get there a week early, I can catch a game or two.

However, I do go to most games in Anaheim and this year, I plan to watch a couple games in SBC Park and one in Petco.

I did the spring training thing in 1999 where I watched about seven Blue Jays games in the Grapefruit League. One day I saw them play and Tim Johnson was the manager. The next day I was at Dunedin and Jim Fregosi was the manager. Exciting times.

No fair! May 3rd... first day of work AND first day of night classes.

I hope Noise Night is a success so we can do it again on a day that doesn't rhyme with Funday or Bendsday (Funday is meant to rhyme with Monday... Sundays actually work though).

Have a great time, I don't even get to watch on TV. I hope my classroom has wireless internet (advantage of going to Ryerson).

Make Lotsa noise! I wanna be able to hear you from school!!!

I feel shame. But when the lid is on, I don't like the Dome - sorry, but there it is. But I will come out for as many of the Cheer Club events (most likely May 3!) as I can, as:

1 - I work 8 minute walk from the Dome;
2 - I live 4 minute walk from the Dome.

And as I am over 6'3" with a bad back, I really hate their kiddie chairs too. You can refute all you want, but I still absolutely despise the Wave, the pale imitations of minor league promotions, the host, the mind-control cheer directing (come on, do you not have a problem with "when we did the slow clap on our own they stopped prompting us on the JumboTron" my fellow Russkie doggies?).

And their out-of-town scoreboard sucks.

(hey, Bill Sinkins - long time no hear! - when you coming in to the Smoke?)

Moose Factory, eh Aaron? Anybody here know the leading scorer from Moose Factory in the NHL this year (I only know one guy, and he did a good job scoring this year ... I'm assuming he is the answer)?
_Blobster - Tuesday, April 27 2004 @ 07:18 PM EDT (#69407) #
Don't know if anyone has said this but one of reasons people aren't buying tickets is because of the jays poor play at the dome, specially in the games that everyone's paying attention to.

ITS PLAIN AND SIMPLE THERE PLAY AT HOME HAS GOT TO IMPROVE
_Harry Heatherin - Tuesday, April 27 2004 @ 07:31 PM EDT (#69408) #
I disagree, Blobster - we're not talking the fringe fans here, we're talking people on this site. We should go - or not go - because it's the Jays, or it's baseball. A winning team just puts fair weather fans in the seats.

NFH: I sent you the Thor Hammer pics through email. Just hoping you recieved them and the email wasnt turned back due to size restrictions or something.

Soon the mighty sign will be complete for all the AL EAST to fear.

Aaron:

My girlfriend and I are in.

Feel free to email me to work out tickets, etc.

That's right, guys! I can personally guarantee the presence of at least one actual live girl!
_Moffatt - Tuesday, April 27 2004 @ 09:04 PM EDT (#69411) #
Yeah, but she's taken, unless you really mess up between now and then. :)

Jobu, if the mail bounces, I'll give you a username and password to upload it to my work website.

come on, do you not have a problem with "when we did the slow clap on our own they stopped prompting us on the JumboTron" my fellow Russkie doggies?

Is the slow clap not a long-standing baseball tradition?

And Blobster, are you saying that the reason that you are not coming to Incredible Noise Night on Monday, May 3rd is because they've lost more at home this year? One thing I cannot promise is a win, but I can promise that they will hear us and hopefully that will motivate them.

Here is the 411...

Tonight I had a long sit down with the drum. I explained to him the rules of Skydome and what is expected of him. He seems to be alright with this and is planning on attending the game on May 3rd. I shall be in attendance too. That is all.

At least two.

I will be attending, and last time I checked, I was a live girl!!

I have two cowbells, by the way, and they sound awesome (got 'em for the World Cycling Championships last year, and you could hear 'em on TV as they went by). I'll bring them if I can make it (doubtful) but they will definitely come to my next appearance with the Cheer Club.

Cowbells are available at just about any agricultural supply store or co-op (got ours at the TSC in Brantford). Yes, that's tongue-in-cheek - in Hogtown, I have no freakin' clue where you'd go.

Now what we REALLY need is a steel drum. :)

You can refute all you want, but I still absolutely despise the Wave

Feel free to despise it, Harry. That's no problem. I'm just saying I like it and I'm glad others do too.

I have a friend with a steel drum, but she's living in Trinidad right now.

See, a big bass drum you just need to be able to keep time. A steel drum requires some musical talent. I am not ready for a steel drum.

Does anyone have a trumpet or bugle? We could do our own "charge" call.

Wow what a thread...

I'm the "music too loud" friend of Jordan's... I hate it... uf oiu try to cheer, you just get drowned out....

Maybe whoever said it is right, maybe its quieter this year... takes a long time to turn around a big boat though....

on the other hand
for the first 3 years the Dome was open, I played in a band sponsored by Labatt, they'd give out 1000 tickets and take over sections 504-510 and plop us in the middle... lots of noise then, I don't remembering hearing much taped music.. on the other hand, there are whole games that I don't remember!

Drum update:

Drum is a-okay. Still figuring out how to get it in. Other instruments should be held off on until we see how the drum goes over.
