`The Duchess will be furious,' thought the White Rabbit. He was carrying a silver tray on which rested a bowl of sugar cubes, a plate of biscuits and a white china teapot inset with gold leaf. As he ran, the contents of the tray slid back and forth, mixing themselves up terribly.

The Rabbit said to himself, `Three tea bags, a biscuit in hot water for five minutes, one lump of milk and some sugar. Yes, I'm quite certain that's what the Duchess asked for.'

The Duchess, of course, was furious. `I swear, if that rabbit doesn't return soon I shall have no choice but to feed him his own awful tea. Yes, that will teach him well. "I'll be back in five minutes," he said. "Shan't be but a moment." He's been gone three weeks if he's been gone a day.'

The Duchess' fury only grew as the White Rabbit obsequiously bowed his way into her prescence. `Your tea, Duchess,' he said, as he carefully laid the tray at her feet.

`I'm glad to see you've brought my biscuits, tea and sugar,' said the Duchess in reply, 'but I would like to ask you: where is my Crystal Ball?'

Taking a page from Chris Zelkovich's playbook (incidentally, I was his paperboy for several years; the Oshawa Times, Monday through Saturday, delivered on weekdays after school until it went bust), let's separate these predictions into three categories: Correct, Incorrect and Ugly. These predictions are only supposed to be surrounding the pre-season; any accidental forays into the Regular Season are to be tempered with the fact that I'm three weeks late.

Crystal Ball, The Correct

  • Mike Moffatt's prediction that Alfonso Soriano would be dealt for Alex Rodriguez.
  • mathesond knew Jayson Werth would be traded to the Dodgers.
  • Coach predicted Halladay would sign a 4-year, $44 million contract in Dunedin; he was right about the years and the place, wrong (but close) about the numbers (in Rogers' favour, though).

Crystal Ball, The Incorrect

  • Just about everybody assumed that Vladimir Guerrero would be heading to Baltimore, and some thought Ivan Rodriguez would be an Oriole too.
  • mathesond thought that Jayson Werth would bring back Odalis Perez.
  • Dave Till's prediction that Ivan Rodriguez would sign with Baltimore.
  • SportsmanTO predicted that Halladay would re-sign after his next 20-win season; luckily, this worked out in our favour.
  • Coach thought Talley Haines would be returned to the D-Rays; as it turned out, the Rays got some form of compensation and the Jays sent him down to AAA.

Crystal Ball, The Ugly

  • Mike Moffatt's prediction that Alex Rodriguez would play second for the Yankees.
  • People continue making predictions that Delgado will be traded, which agrees with our resident Nostradamus Coach but is a waste of time anyways.

It's a small crop of predictions that can be checked before the season had begun (and feel free to chime in if I've missed any from the Crystal Ball thread), but I award the Batter's Box Crystal Ball preseason prize to Mike Moffatt. Your tea and biscuits will be delivered by the Rabbit presently.

Oooh.. I had the best and worst prediction!

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone,' it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.'
'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master - that's all.'

(My conversation in another thread just reminded me of this) :)

My worst prediction: Chris Woodward to have a fine season. My best prediction: David Bush to be called up in Toronto in July and have a fine start to his career. Prediction that still must wait: Toronto Star to run have an end of year review with pictures of David and George W with the line "The Year of Bush".
