For the second straight series, the Jays hit the road for a series with a division leader. And if the Jays keep on hitting, they can once again bump their opponent out of first place by earning a series win on the road.

The 12-6 Twins have not been meaningfully slowed by their well-documented slew of injuries. Surprising contributions from Lew Ford and Henry Blanco -- yes, that Henry Blanco -- have offset the potential offence lost when the Twinkies' opening series landed Torii Hunter and Joe Mauer on the injured list. And though the Twins haven't gotten nearly the performances they had hoped for from their three starters on the docket this week, their excellent bullpen has held down leads and kept Minnesota in games that the club's bats have subsequently won in the late innings.

The key for the Jays will be to strike early and get to the starting staff; hopefully, the Jays saved some of their overflowing offence from yesterday. The Jays do not want to face a comeback attempt against the tough trio of Rincon, Romero and Nathan.

On to the Advance Scout!

* After a somewhat sluggish start, the Twins have commenced with their anticipated thrashing of Central Division opponents ... Minnesota is 9-2 in its last 11, all of which have been played against the Tribe, Tigers and Royals ... The Twins are 9-0 when leading after seven, a testament to their excellent trio at the back of the bullpen ...

* Despite his stellar 2/15 BB/K ratio, tonight's starter Brad Radke has been knocked around at a .313 clip ... He had a sparkling outing at Jacobs field on April 15, going eight shutout innings, but has been hit hard in his other three starts ... He was tagged by the Tigers for six runs on seven hits in just two innings on Wednesday ... Ron Gardenhire on his quick hook: "Six runs is a lot in two innings...Rather than let him get his brains beat, you go to the bullpen" ... The Twins are expected to ask for a hometown discount from Radke; the righty, currently earning $10 million per season, won't get a Minnesota offer over about $6 million per year again ...

* Ron Gardenhire might not quite be Carlos Tosca, but he's a fan of the pitching change ... Example: 25-year-old righty Juan Rincon has already made ten appearances ... Rincon has given up just four hits in 9 2/3 IP on the season, but one of those hits was a game-tying three-run blast by Carlos Beltran on April 16 ... Righties are hitting .095 off of Rincon ...

* His lefty counterpart in the set-up role, J.C. Romero, gave up his first run of the season in yesterday's game ... He's allowed just four hits in 10 2/3 IP (also ten apperances), giving him an incredibly stingy .108 opposing batting average ... Lefties are hitting .067 off him ...

* Overall, Gardenhire has been justifiably delighted with the 'pen ... Gardenhire: "[A]nytime you lose Eddie Guardado and LaTroy Hawkins, people are going to say 'your bullpen is totally gone' ... But with the arms we have, we're not weak" ...

* Jacque Jones is having a solid April at .329/.382/.557 ... He's four-for-four in steal attempts, but all four were against Kansas City in the same series ...

* Tomorrow's starter, the exceptionally live-armed Johan Santana, has been vulnerable to the long ball this season ... The longtime stathead fave has been taken deep five times in his four starts, which has contributed to his 5.91 ERA ... He'll be relying on his (very capable) 'pen on Tuesday, as his longest outing has been 6 1/3 innings this season ...

* Slick-fielding Doug Mientkiewicz (ment-KAY-vich, in case you were wondering) went hitless this weekend ...

* With just two walks on the season, Cristian Guzman's mediocre season line sits at .266/.288/.344 ... Ordinarily very reliable in the field, Guzman has committed three errors in his last two games ...

* With seven multi-hit games already, Lew Ford has forced his way into an everyday job ... Yet another in the Twins' seemingly endless parade of hit-happy outfielders, Ford's up to .408/.455/.714 on the season ... Ford's quickly becoming a Metrodome cult hero ...

* The man who won't go away, Jose Offerman, is slugging .509 on the season, thanks largely to seven doubles ...

* Pressed into a starting job by the torn meniscus of Joe Mauer, Henry Blanco has brought surprising pop to the backstop ... Despite having a career-best OPS of .712, he's put up .313/.411/.604 numbers this season ... Strange: At home, Blanco's hitting a more typical .150/.292/.200. But on the road, he's an amazing .414/.469/.862, with four doubles and three homers ... He's earned the tongue-in-cheek nickname "Hammerin' Hank" ... Even better, Blanco's delivered the defence the Twins thought they were buying for $750,000. Blanco's been popular with the Twins' Spanish-speaking pitchers, and Romero has credited Blanco's communication skills for his fast start ... His backup for now is 23-year-old Rob Bowen, who's 2 for 9 on the season with a single and a homer ...

* After coming from San Francisco in the A.J. Pierzynski trade, Joe Nathan has been converted to the club's closer ... His last six appearances have all been save situations -- and he's converted all six without yielding a run ... He has, however, allowed at least one baserunner in all of his saves ... Despite striking out eleven in his nine innings, he's walked a disconcerting seven ... Nine of his ten outings have been scoreless ...

* Luis "Oh-For-Threevas" Rivas is in fact 0 for his last 15 ... His sorry line on the year: .207/.233/.345 ...

* The alternative at second base isn't great: all of Nick Punto's nine hits have been singles ...

* The pride of Anola, Manitoba, Corey Koskie has hit in his last five starts, with five extra-base hits over that span ...

* Wednesday's starter, hard-throwing Kyle Lohse, has given up at least four runs in all of his starts thus far ... His BB/K ratio is a poor 12/13, and opponents are hitting .326 off him ... Oddly, righties are hitting .395 off Lohse ...

* Old friend Shannon Stewart boasts an excellent .427 OBP this season, with a fine 15/6 BB/K ratio ... Stew missed the weekend series against Kansas City, though, with a tight right hamstring ... He was expected to play yesterday but couldn't go ... He'll be spelled by Mike Ryan if he can't play against his old mates this week ... Count Stew among those who don't view FieldTurf as a panacea: "Since I've been on that stuff, my legs haven't responded" ...

* In spot duty, Ryan's gone 9 for 21 (.429) ... Ryan came through with a clutch ninth-inning, game-tying single off of Curtis Leskanic in Friday's come-from-behind win over the Royals ...

* The often-spectacular Torii Hunter has been limited to just three games -- the year's first two games, and yesterday's matinee -- due to his own hamstring problems ... Hunter overcame his anxiousness at the plate -- "You want to hit a five-run home run with nobody on" -- and homered in his return yesterday ... At least for tonight, he'll be limited to DH responsibilities, which he loathes: "This is the worst job a man can have" ... Slightly hyperbolic, Mr. Hunter ... To make room for Hunter's return from the DL, the Twins demoted gas-can lefty Carlos Pulido, who was really hearing it from the ordinarily-supportive Metrodome faithful as he got bombed in outing after outing ...

* Rick Helling, who suffered an incredibly painful broken shin after being struck by a line drive in spring training, made a rehab start with the Class-A Fort Myers Miracle this weekend ...

* Highly-touted Grant Balfour played catch this weekend for the first time since going on the DL with an inflamed pitching shoulder ...

Mike D, Friendly correction. The Jays are scheduled to start a left-handed starter Lilly. Great work as always with the Advance Scout.
_Cristian - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 04:24 PM EDT (#69947) #
I'm really curious how the Jays will respond to the new Fieldturf in Minnesota. If the field gets positive reviews, maybe the Jays will consider switching over next year.
_Moffatt - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 04:27 PM EDT (#69948) #
Is it up to the Jays? I thought it would be the responsibility of the Skydome, which the Jays don't own.
_Cristian - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 04:30 PM EDT (#69949) #
Of course it's the responsibility of the 'dome but a bit of pressure from the team wouldn't hurt.
_Moffatt - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 04:32 PM EDT (#69950) #
Problem is, what pressure can the Jays put on the dome? "Put it in some field turf, or we'll.. ummm...."

It could still happen, but the Jays would likely have to spend a lot of money, and given their financial situation, I can't see that happening. I'd love to get rid of the carpet, though.

"we'll play at a new retro-Wrigley-neibourhood-like park at Christie Pits!!!!"

Can we start a petition for this??!!!!
Mike D - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 05:35 PM EDT (#69952) #
Made the change, Mike Green. Thanks for the heads-up...

You can always start a petition, but it won't always do any good. I'd sign it. Who do you send it to - the Dome or the Jays?

Here's another thought - which would you rather have field turf or a weatherized Skydome suitable for grass (it must be possible). Of course, this is all made moot by the argument about needing the concrete for trade shows and car shows. That and budget.
_Niles - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 06:12 PM EDT (#69954) #
I talked about the fieldturf issue over at Some Calzone For Derek. I think the problem is the contention between Sportsco, who owns the Dome, and the Jays organization. They don't seem to get along.

Fieldturf only takes about 8 hours to move in and isn't all that expensive. Given, what the Twins paid, the Jays would be looking at a little over a mill for the turf. For a team that is building around groundball pitchers and hitters that can hit but not necessarily field all that well, the slower fieldturf surface makes a lot of sense.

FYI - Not only are the Jays the only team left playing on AstroTurf, the company that makes the turf is bankrupt, leaving me to ponder maintanance issues.

Yeah, start a petition and maybe someone can deliver it at the Jays fest.

Fieldturf is a Canadian company by the way.
_Cristian - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 06:23 PM EDT (#69955) #
More important than being a Canadian company, Fieldturf is a Quebec company. Won't the federal government subsidize the cost of the purchase? Or is the federal government only interested in handing out cash for non-services rendered?
_EddieZosky - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 06:35 PM EDT (#69956) #
I can't believe that the 1 million dollar price tag that Niles quotes is correct, but apparently it is. It cost 650,000 USD to install it at Giants stadium last year. That's crazy cheap.

The only downside is that it's difficult to move. Based on what I read, they'd have to cover it for trade shows rather than move it in and out. It sounds promising though.
_Moffatt - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 06:37 PM EDT (#69957) #

BURN!!!

Anyone see the editorial cartoon in the Toronto Star today that seriously seemed to be suggesting that letting Quebec corporations and politicians rob us blind is the price we must pay for national unity?
_Moffatt - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 06:41 PM EDT (#69958) #
Here's the cartoon in question.

Unbelievable. I guess it's okay then that millions of dollars went missing that could have been used, for, I don't know, fulfilling the government's promise to end child poverty in this country.

Anyhow, I really ought to stop being political. Or I need to start a Red Tory version of the Will Carroll weblog. :)

If this is accurate, I'd gladly take it out of the player salary budget.
_Picky but right - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 07:01 PM EDT (#69960) #
Nice notes, but please, don't say "off of". Not only is it grammatically incorrect, it's a waste of effort. (He got the hit OFF Lescanic.) Thank you very much.
_Cristian - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 07:03 PM EDT (#69961) #
Mike,

That cartoon is awful. I can't imagine what millions of dollars going to a few select individuals with ties to the Liberals does for national unity---or even the desire by ordinary Quebecers to remain Canadian.

And if you do start a red Tory version of the Will Carroll weblog let me know so I have a more appropriate venue to vent.
_Scott - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 07:04 PM EDT (#69962) #
The million seems a little cheap to do the fieldturf, considering it cost C$2 mill to install the current carpet in 1997.

The current turf will probably be replaced somtime in the next 3 to 5 years. It is currently 7 years old and has a maximum life of 14 years, but will probably be replaced a couple of years before that. Tosca has already complained once this year about how much wear and tear there has been.
_Jonny German - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 07:04 PM EDT (#69963) #
Uh, hate to be picky, but do you by chance mean "Leskanic"?
_Picky and wrong - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 07:07 PM EDT (#69964) #
Yeah, Leskanic. Did you know his sister is Katrina of Katrina and the Waves ("Walking on Sunshine")? She apparently couldn't spell her last name either, so she did without it.

On the local radio political talk-show in London this morning, the host (Jim Chapman) was talking about the idea of Ontario seperating from the rest of Canada.. and the majority of callers were all for it!

Does anyone want to stay in this country?

I don't think I'll be starting a Canadian politics/baseball blog anytime soon, but if anyone starts one, I'd be a frequent visitor.
_Cristian - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 07:42 PM EDT (#69966) #
You should know that radio talk shows specialize in gut-reaction politics. The hosts get ratings by being inflammatory and having idiots call in with reactionary soundbites. The few intelligent people who call in are usually cut off before they can make a well thought out argument. Being in Alberta I'm used to the 'let's separate from the rest of Canada' talk. However, it never gets past the gut-reaction stage.

Oh yeah, totally. I doubt it reflects what we'd get from an opinion poll.

I was just surprised I didn't hear more people phone in and say "that's the stupidest idea I've ever heard".
_Cristian - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 07:55 PM EDT (#69968) #
I'm sure that many people did but they wouldn't have gotten on the air because "that's the stupidest idea I've ever heard" can be construed to mean "you're the stupidest talk show host I've ever heard."

I'm not a big fan of all the opinion polls either. I'm surprised that regardless of the question asked opinion polls don't show more support for "that's none of your goddamned business."
_Moffatt - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 07:59 PM EDT (#69969) #

Before the Conservative convention, Stephen Harper's people were calling me almost EVERY day, asking me who I'd vote for. I never felt so important in my life, even if it had almost nothing to do with me personally. :) I guess they saw London West as being particularly important for their chances. I kept telling them that, well, I wouldn't tell them. Didn't deter them from calling me, though.
_Jim Acker - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 08:45 PM EDT (#69970) #
Back to the real issue. The petition I was referring to would be to create a new retro-Wrigley-neibourhood-like park at Christie Pits. Think about how amazing that would be.

Am I nuts? (and no I'm not thinking practically, so please don't aruge that)
_Niles - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 11:26 PM EDT (#69971) #
I think a more realistic goal would be to let them know you want Fieldturf installed.
_Niles - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 11:43 PM EDT (#69972) #
And just one more thing about the fieldturf. Some of the players have been complaining about it, but the problem is that the turf needs a grace period to be worked in properly and it wasnt given that period because it had to be installed on short notice because the company the Twins originally chose went bankrupt. Thus, its a little spongier now than it will be in a couple of months.
