What a game yesterday! But couldn't the Jays save some of those runs for a game where their pitchers don't have anything? At any rate, it's great that the Jays showed the league that they're still a forced to be reckoned with. And am I the only one who has a hard time believing that they're only two games out of first?
  1. Fordin Notes: Cash leads offense? Who would have guessed? I wouldn't have, for starters. Today it's Batista vs. Matt Riley and the Orioles. The game preview is at "Jays [are] ready for improved O's" in his game preview. Fordin points out that the Jays have pounded the Orioles over the past few years. It'd be a public relations disaster if the Jays finished in fourth this year, so let the pounding continue!

  2. So what are the reporters saying about yesterday's game. Fordin: "Halladay overpowers Tigers: Right-hander fans five in complete-game shutout". Millson: "Toronto hits become 'contagious'". Baker: "Doc back in form as Jays rout Tigers: Halladay picks up first April victory in 13 attempts".

  3. I hadn't seen this before, but I'm sure some of you have. The Star has this story (in PDF) format about why different Jays players chose the numbers they now wear. Here's the file.

Batista vs. Riley? My rotisserie team doesn't like the sound of that. And, yes, it's 6 a.m. in Seattle, and I'm still awake. I guess you could say I'm "sleepless in Seattle." Yuk yuk yuk.

Don't worry, it's 9am in Toronto and I'm still awake, thank goodness for baseball ;-)

You don't remember the immortal Stuart?

I love that song, NFH. It was the intro to the rough copy of my Pirates preview. It's a shame the lead singer recently committed suicide. :(

Right on, Mike! But I gotta rest my arm at work today. My nine-year-old son has tryouts for the Bolton Braves Minor Mosquito Rep team tomorrow, and I've been pitching to him all week (tough on a father who's 50!). My son played right field for the Bolton Braves Senior Rookie Rep team last year - phenomenal summer - team went 32-7 and won the Ontario Baseball Association B Championship on Labour Day Weekend.

Hope the rain stays away and we can all get outside on the weekend!

Agreed. It just happened last month. That and the Elliot Smith suicide were both terrible, sad and shocking. Another great band though. Smoking Bannana Peels, Bitchin Camero, Takin r__ards to the zoo (didn't want to offend).

Was anybody else terrified by that O's lineup while watching the season opener a few weeks back?

It's likely Chad Harville could be traded, possibly to the Los Angeles Dodgers or Toronto Blue Jays, where former Beane assistants Paul DePodesta and J.P. Ricciardi are the respective general managers. A's assistant general manager David Forst said some teams "have shown interest" in Harville, and the A's probably don't want him to be set free without any compensation.

Harville enhanced his chances of latching on somewhere else by posting a 2.87 ERA during the exhibition season and allowing just one run over 2ª innings in three outings this season. He's added a changeup to go with his mid-90s fastball and low-90s slider.

I wondered about Harville, when I saw the Athletics had cut him loose, whether the Jays would make a play for him. He's struggled badly with control in his brief major-league appearances, but he dominated the PCL in relief last year, and that arm is smokin'.

The only problem for Toronto would be, where do you put him? Amazingly enough, the Jays are overloaded with relievers: the major-league pen is full, and as Gerry pointed out in the minor-league thread, there are four big-league-worthy relievers (Chulk, Nakamura, Matos and Douglass) at Syracuse. Maybe the Jays could pick up Harville and flip him to another team -- but Oakland could do that just as easily themselves.

Tell you what, I would love to be a fly on the conference-call wall whenever Ricciardi, Beane and DePodesta get together for three-way trade talks.

In the bullpen, silly. Once the Dave Berg for Chad Harville deal goes through, the Jays will have 13 quality arms on the roster. That might be a little thin, but fortunately in a few days they'll be able to recall Douglass and send Hermansen back to AAA.

You know, if Tosca just got rid of the DH, he could carry another pitcher. Sure, Phelps might be able to hit a little, but he's useless when you need to get that right matchup for the fifth time in a game...

Hey, I'm awake again! Four hours of sleep'll keep me nice and cheery.

Re: Eliot Smith suicide: How does own accomplish this by shooting himself in the chest?

Re: Harville. Meh. Sure, he throws hard, but he's now 26, he's shown an alarming ability to get peppered when he gets called up, etc, etc, etc. Not a bad arm to take a flier on, of course, but don't expect much.

Re" OOP6. I had no idea what that was until The Original Ryan (tm) mentioned it. It's been a while since I've played video games, actually, though I certain enjoyed them when I did play them. The sports game were usually the best, but I always found the baseball ones somewhat lacking lacking -- outside of the immortal Baseball Stars for Nintendo. (Strat-O-Matic I don't consider a video game -- more like a way of life.)

Unlikely.

The Dodgers jost got rid of a Harville clone, Jason Frasor. And they traded him to Toronto.

There is a market for short righthanders with power arms, I just don't think you'll find one in LA or Toronto right now....

I'm all for a Berg/Harville deal, as long as we immediately flip him to KC for Calvin Pickering.

Pickering went 1 for 3 with a HR yesterday, and his SLG _dropped_ from 1.709 to 1.650. I still wouldn't mind seeing Jack Cust in a Jays uni either. I'd much rather have another power bat off the bench than a redundant defensive replacement.
Thomas - Friday, April 16 2004 @ 02:41 PM EDT (#72027) #
I believe Smith stabbed himself in the chest, ya.

I was hoping OOTP 6 might be delayed by a week or so. This can't be good for my exam preparation.

I don't see the A's wanting Berg. They have Scutaro doing an admirable job at second and Menechino will be a servicable backup when he gets off the DL. Esteban German is still in AAA, and McLemore has been brought aboard as a utility player. Berg would have as little of a role there as he does here. In Toronto he could at least get ABs against lefties at 2B.

The official site (COMN)lists 39 players.
Miller was outrighted after he cleared waivers, right? That's why there's an opening?

Douglass was the most recent subtraction from the roster. He was outrighted too after he cleared waivers on the second try.

Jack Cust isn't a "power bat", at least not if Chad Hermansen isn't.

Cust has 130 HR in 780 pro games, and most of those games have been in high-altitude home run parks (High Desert, Tucson, El Paso, Colorado Springs, Denver). 27 HR per 162 career games.

Hermansen has 168 HR in 1063 pro games, mostly at sea level. 26 HR per 162 career games, at higher levels than Jack Cust to boot.

?

There's really no comparison between the two of them. Cust has enough of a batting eye that he can actually make solid contact from time to time against decent pitching (of which there is far more in MLB). The same cannot be said for Hermansen.
