On September 27th, 2003, Will Carroll visited with about 50 or so of us a diehard seamheads. We had pizza, we had beverages, we saw Roy Halladay win his 22nd game, and everyone other than Jody Gerut and Brandon Phillips had a terrific time.

Now Mr. Carroll is coming back to Toronto!

As part of the Baseball Prospectus Book Tour, he'll be at the Indigo bookstore at 2300 Yonge St., just north of Eglinton (click here for a map). There will be free pizza, a lot of baseball talk, and you can meet Will and a bunch of other, less famous, baseball bloggers. Despite being on entirely the wrong side of the political spectrum, Will's quite an intelligent guy and a fascinating fellow to chat with. Last year's Pizza Feed is my best Jays memory of 2003, so I highly encourage people to come on out and have some fun!

Despite being on entirely the wrong side of the political spectrum...

It's funny, I read that line and thought to myself, "You mean Carroll's on the right? Didn't he just write a great critique of Bush?" But then I realized it was Moffatt saying so, and everything's in its right place.

Well, I just didn't want this to become too much of a lovefest, so I had to find a way to sneak that in somewhere.

In all seriousness, I really enjoy the mixture of politics and baseball on his weblog. It's fun, because I *do* disagree with some of it. Mind you, being a Tory, a former Greenpeace employee, a free-marketer, and a supporter of the gay rights movement, I tend to disagree with some of everything. :)

So if you can, come out. It'll be a blast.

Cheers,

Mike

I was at the event last year and it was a blast. And Will bought a new black Jays hat, which means that he is a good person.

I'll be there for sure. The Jays will be in K.C., so we should have a Beer Club meeting after the book tour, and we might be able to twist Will's arm to join us.

Barring a financial windfall, I'll be stuck here in the Pacific Northwest, missing another fun-filled Box outing. Say "hi" to Will for me, though.

All this technology, all these anti-baldness drugs, and we STILL haven't mastered teleporation?

Beer club? Like you had to ask! (The first rule of beer club ...)

I hope to see everyone there and I promise, no politics. And what's this about anti-baldness drugs?

I promise, no politics

Does Mark Cuban count as politics? We need some love for the man who's finally won me over.

BP has identified which Indigo the book tour's going to be visiting. It's the one on Yonge just north of Eglinton; convenient to TTC.

Thanks. I'll change the intro to the thread with the new info.

But death for those of us who get in and out of town on the LAkeshore line. Crap.

Craig: speaking as someone who used to commute daily from Oakville to York University via public transit (walk/Oakville Transit/GO train/subway/TTC bus: total travel time anywhere between 2 and 3 hours each way), the amount of sympathy I have is somewhat limited. The subway trip up to Eglinton is nothing.

as someone who used to commute daily from Oakville to York University via public transit

Ironically, this is a breeze now as there's a straight trip on a Highway 407 bus from Oakville GO Station, Sheridan College, and 407 & Trafalgar and make the trip from Oakville GO in about an hour.

You were born a couple years too early, Matthew :)

Anyway, you're right, no sense complaining about 20 minutes on the subway. And that's a nice Indigo to boot!

No kidding. And it goes right to York?
Craig B - Friday, April 23 2004 @ 11:28 AM EDT (#70878) #
Yup, right to the campus. :)

Huh. Well, you live and you learn.

You were born a couple years too early, Matthew :)

No kidding. For instance, I was also born early enough that I was out of school before the educators figured out that maybe it wasn't a great idea to let 17-year-olds beat up 11-year-olds and break their arms in full view of teachers.
_Moffatt - Friday, April 23 2004 @ 11:41 AM EDT (#70880) #
Since when have educators figured that out?
_Matthew E - Friday, April 23 2004 @ 11:43 AM EDT (#70881) #
Since Columbine, as far as I can tell.

It's possible. It's still really hard to expel a student in Ontario (much harder than it was, say 20 or 30 years ago). I suppose criminal charges could be filed in a situation like that, but I imagine that doesn't happen too frequently.
