Mark Saturday, March 27th, 1:00PM EST off on your calendars. It's the day the Blue Jays Cheer Club is having a coast-to-coast Jays event. Here's how you can be part of the fun:

Rogers Sportsnet is showing the spring-training game featuring the Blue Jays vs. the Astros on March 27th at 1:00PM EST. We'd like Jays fans in as many cities in Canada as possible to get together to watch the game, have some wings, and generally just have a good time.

If you'd like to get involved, here's what you can do:

Propose the city you'd like to see the game in, and the sports bar in that city you'll meet at. Once at least 2 people agree to meet at the same spot, we'll add it to the list.

Where we'll be watching the game

  • London, ON: The Alibi Roadhouse, 25 Oxford St. W. Batter's Box regulars Brent and Mike Moffatt will be there.
  • Toronto, ON:Sports Center Cafe, 49 St. Clair W, just west of Yonge St. All kinds of Bauxites will be there.

Proposed Sites

  • Montreal, QC: Peel Pub
  • Ottawa, ON: Hoops on Sparks St.
  • Swift Current, SK: ???
I'm hoping we can get at least 10 different cities in Canada involved... so we can get out and show the country that the Jays are a team worth getting excited about!

Once our list is complete, we plan on promoting it far and wide to as many Jays fans as we can. No invitations or annoucements are required.. just show up and enjoy the game! We'd like you to promote this on other message boards; this isn't simply a Batter's Box or Cheer Club only event. All baseball fans are invited to come.

Anyone interested? Please indicate what city you're in, and what sports bar you'd like to meet at. Once at least two of you have agreed on a spot, I'll add it to the list.

Toronto What about Sports Cafe on St. Clair?

I'm in for any Toronto venue, preferably on the subway line somewhere.

Is Sports Cafe easy to get to?

Important question about the downtown core. What are the best sports bars around downtown to watch the game? I've just moved back to the city after a 7 year hiatus, so I might need a refesher.

Here's a list to some, there are no doubt plenty more, feel free to add so we can come up with a concensous.

(All links will open a new window)

- Peel Pub (King & University, by Roy Thompson Hall) is huge, has tonnes of TVs, and they have their liquor license back after having it suspended a while back. Wings are a little suspect, but they do have 160 ounce pitchers (which is always a good thing)

- The Madison (Bloor & Spadina) has a big screen and decent food, beer is a little more expensive then it should be. Good mix of young and old.

- The Loose Moose (University & Front) advertises itself as a sports bar, I've never been so any comments would be nice. Also, is it wrong to be turned on by the Flash girl on their website? ;)

- Picadilly Circus (King & John) is on Pearl Street actually, but nobody will know where the hell that is. Looks decent as well, will have a good variety of beers I guess.

- Hard Rock Cafe (SkyDome). We could go right to the source.

- Apparently there is a place called the Main Event at Younge & Eglinton, but I can't find anything about it online.

Cheers,
Andrew

Yeah, it is. Go to St. Clair Stn. and walk east on St. Clair. It's on the south side about a 1/4 block east of Yonge.

I'll still be in Montreal at that point so I won't be able to join up for that.
_Oggman - Wednesday, March 10 2004 @ 01:52 PM EST (#75392) #
Sports Cafe on St. Clair, I remember that one. Watched the very first Raptor game there, from what I remember it's very close to Younge and St. Clair subway stop.

Yeah, but you could always start up the Montreal branch of baseball day!

I floated the idea out there but nobody bit so I just have to assume that there's not a single person who visits this site (aside from me) who lives in Montreal.

If there is someone who wants to see a game in this wonderful city, speak now! :-)

Do you have a bar in mind in Montreal? I'm sure if you mention one, it'll garner some interest. I know for a fact there's at least a couple McGill students that visit the site.

Cheers,

Mike

Andrew or A, re: Sports Cafe. Have you been there recently? I went for the Raptors first game (Still remember that Alvin Robinson 3pt shot right off the tip), but haven't been there since. If it's decent, I think we have our winner for Toronto.

Cheers,
Andrew (another one)

I've never actually been to Sports Cafe but I pass it enough while I'm in Toronto.

For Montreal...Anyone up for the *original* Peel Pub?

Sure.. you go and pick my absolute *favourite* bar in Montreal. If you go to Ben's Deli afterwards, I think I'm going to cry.

I haven't been to Montreal since last July.. I really need to get back.

Cheers,

Mike

On the off chance that someone who lives in the SW of Saskatchewan that visits this site we could meet in Swift Current. Now unlike Toronto or Montreal our selection of sports bars are limited but if anyone is out there you can email me or post which bar you would like to meet at.

The next step would be having Da Box brass sending out press releases to all Canadian media outlets announcing this day in hopes of the news carrying even further, to all baseball fans.

Don't worry.. if we can get enough different cities involve, this is something we'll be promoting through a number of different avenues. I just wnat to make sure there's enough demand at the grass roots to make something like this worthwhile. I think there is, which is why I thought EddieZosky's ideas of regional events was such a good one.

Be sure to tell all your friends that are Jays fans. If there's a group of people who can guarantee me they'll be at a bar on a particular date, I'll add it to the list.

Cheers,

Mike

I wish I could join these parties. Sounds like a blast. Chicago's just a mite far. We won't get that game out here I assume either. Although it would probably just be me sitting alone with all the annoying Cubs fans anyway. Good thing MLB.TV came along. Have a good time y'all!

Sports Cafe is a decent place to watch a game. With luck, there will be several other games on the satellite as well.

I'll go to the Sports Cafe if I am assured that we will have large screen and sound. I won't watch the game on a tiny screen as one of many games with no sound and the blaring of some stupid rock station in my ears.

Would organizers be good enough to confirm the arrnagements?
_Spicol - Thursday, March 11 2004 @ 09:07 AM EST (#75415) #
The Madison is closed for renovations right now. Not sure for how long though.

Renovations due to serving minors? It seems that the Maddy, like all good UofT bars at some point in their existence, has been in a little trouble with the law lately.

To the Brunny! (I kid, I kid)

London, ho!

March 27th is moving day for moi but count me in for future meetings of the BBBC - London Chapter.
_Andrew Edwards - Thursday, March 11 2004 @ 09:59 AM EST (#75416) #
I guess my Sports Cafe thing kinda snowballed. I watched the World Series there two years ago, and mostly I like their Onion Rings. I'll call them sometime tonight and make sure that they can have the game take a big screen, with the understanding that there'll be a bunch of us coming.

Hopefully, there won't be a Leafs game at the same time.

Nope.. they play Ottawa at 7. That should be a great game.. You hardcore sportstypes could stay all day!

So Toronto and London are definately a go... If any of you are on other Jays message boards, could you let them know about the event. Just something like:

Count me in for the Toronto event. I look forward to seeing everyone I met last year and meeting more of you.

Hopefully, there won't be a Leafs game at the same time.

On a Saturday afternoon, we should be OK. But it's a good idea to call ahead and reserve a big screen anyway.

I'm already anticipating the next Beer Club meeting, when the game will actually matter. On the April 9-11 weekend at Fenway, they play at 3:00 Friday afternoon, 7:00 Saturday and 2:00 Sunday. Most people work on Fridays, and Hockey Night in Canada, especially during the playoffs, is likely to be a distraction, so why don't we try for the finale?

It's a good question. I think we look for the people watching spring training baseball; how far wrong can you go?

If you're going to the London event, I'm really easy to spot.

Seriously, though. Maybe we can have a sign on the table, or something like that. It shouldn't be a problem.

I'm still going Saturday; it should be fun. I'll be the guy who looks like Bill James.

The Red Sox series (April 9-11) is Easter weekend. That makes the 3:00 Friday matinee a holiday for a lot of people, and it might preclude the Sunday afternoon for others with family commitments. I'll be watching them all, so it doesn't matter to me -- if there's another Beer Club meeting, I'll be there. So far, that one's just Aaron and me.

Okay, so who's in for Toronto on Saturday? Just so I can give Sports Cafe an idea on numbers.

Also, I will give anyone who shows up one vote on the burning opening day question of What To Do With Aaron's Hair.

Last year I went with Royal Blue, swept up and back like Tetsuo at the end of Akira.

This year's options are
a) blue
b) mohawk
c) blue mohawk
d) shaved shiny with the Jays logo painted on my scalp

Maybe I'll update the poll at bluejayscheerclub.com, especially since some people apparently think I'm being too mean to A-Rod! ;)
