Congratulations to Roy Halladay, our 2003 Batter’s Box Blue Jays Major League Player of the Year.
Everything there is to say about Roy Halladay’s 2003 has probably already been said. In a year that saw several magnificent performances by Blue Jays, Doc’s Cy Young season was too much for the voters to ignore.
More than just going 22-7 with a 3.25 ERA and an incredible 6.38-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, Doc won this award with several unforgettably dominating performances, some of which we’ll remember for many years. A 10-inning, three-hit shutout of the Tigers in September; a seven-inning, two-hit demolition of the Orioles in July; nine incredible innings against a brilliant Tim Wakefield just before the All-Star Break, a game the Jays eventually lost 2-1 in the 12th. Doc had eleven wins in eleven starts in May and June, and didn’t lose for three and a half months, and was a rotation anchor all year for a team that needed one badly. He completed five games in six September starts, and looked utterly dominant the whole month - giving him a great push into 2004.
Runners-up Carlos Delgado and Vernon Wells both had spectacular years as well, finishing second and eighth in the voting for AL MVP. Each would have been a worthy winner - were it not for the best year by a Blue Jays pitcher since Roger Clemens. Congratulations, Roy! We hope to make the award to Roy early in the coming season.
Stay tuned tomorrow for our announcement of the Blue Jays Minor League Player of the Year.
