Step right up, step right up! Batter's Box would like to invite you to participate in the fantastic Last Annual Batter's Box Yankees September Third Baseman Prediction Contest... otherwise known as the LABBYSTBPC.

All you have to do, is to predict who the Yankees' starting third baseman will be in September, and how many starts he will make. Closest to the identity (and the number of starts) wins a fabulous prize! Well, a genuine MLB-licensed Ichiro Suzuki T-shirt, anyway. It's entirely up to me what determines "closest identity".

If you guess the player who makes the most starts at third base for the Yankees in the month of September, you will win (if two players tie for an equal highest number of starts, both are eligible). If two people guess the same player and number of starts, then they each get half a shirt.

Fire away, folks! You can't win if you don't play! The contest closes at midnight on Monday, February 2nd.

And by the way, I am picking Tony Batista, with 22 starts. For your reference, the Yankees are scheduled to play 25 games in September.

Wow, so many choices. I've heard Jeter, Soriano, Wilson, Almonte, Beltre, and Henson bandied about.

I'll take the easy way out and go with Boone, 20. If my facts are straight, he may not be out for the whole season.

I'll go with the surprising un-Yankee philosophy of 3rd baseman by committee and say Enrique Wilson with 16

My sarcastic prediction:

Jeter is so clutch defensively that he'll cover everything left of 2nd base. The Yankees then trade for Beltran and he plays 'rover' in shallow centerfield.
_A - Wednesday, January 28 2004 @ 02:08 AM EST (#34046) #
I was actually thinking they'd get Jeter to move but only after Torre convinced him he was playing 'left-shortstop'.

After the Royals fall out of contention they'll give up Randa for a song and he makes 21 starts.

This all goes out the window if the Royals contend all year. Can I have a backup pick of Ventura with 18?

Henson, 17
Once he sniffs the possibility of starting the year as third baseman, he will lobby long and hard through his agent with George to get it done. And George, well, he loves his pet projects. Unless Drew was lying to us all this time about wanting to play at Yankee Stadium. But an athlete would never lie about something like that, right?

Gleeman's got a good entry (COMN) today on the effects of Sheffield playing 3rd in a Yankee infield. He speculates this could lead to the worst infield in baseball history but points out if this were to happen we'd see one hell of an experiement with Kevin Brown making a start every 5 days.

Mike Green - Thursday, January 29 2004 @ 05:17 PM EST (#34093) #
Mick, you're right Mike Lamb can hit, but then so can Brian Myrow. You figure that Lamb has enough of the "major league sheen" to catch the Yankees' attention?

Major League Sheen?
I really liked that movie, especially the part about "Wild Thing" blaring from the speakers.

But seriously, folks ...
Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, having wondered what Lamb has to do to get a regular spot on the roster here in Dallas (Scott, am I out of line here?), but I think 1,100 major league at-bats was probably enough to get Brian Cashman's attention when the name hit the waiver wire yesterday.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/cs-0401300292jan30,1,5651045.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
Jose Valentin, 18; rumor in Chicago is that he will either go to the Yankees or be used in a 3-way trade to facilitate Glaus going to the Yanks (COMN for story). Trade could also include Konerko, Washburn, or Erstad, who would play CF in Chicago. So I'll take a guess that Phil Rogers is right, if only because nobody has guessed Valentin yet.

Baseball America is reporting that Texas has traded Mike Lamb, who had
been designated for assignment, to the Yankees for Class A righthander
Jose Garcia. Lamb will go right into the mix to start at third base for New York, which this winter has lost Aaron Boone to a knee injury and Drew Henson to the pursuit of a career in the NFL.

The plot thickens...

I think this thread deserves revisiting in light of the ARod to NYY deal. Looks like 3RunHomer hit the jackpot and correctly predicted the deal going down (he called Jeter at 3rd base playing 24 games with ARod at short), but may have incorrectly assumed it'd be Jeter that would slide over to 3b and not ARod. Credit must also go out to Dave Till who first predicted the deal in this thread.

April to August is plenty of time for Jeter's pitiful defence to shine through and ARod to head back to his natural position at SS. If ARod is at third, our winner will be Mark - but as the old adage goes, all will be revealed in time...

July update : since we're edging closer to September, I should note that A-Rod is still the overwhelming favorite to be the YSTB.

A-Rod has played every game at third base for the Yankees this season; only Miguel Cairo (three innings) and Gary Sheffield (one inning as a result of Mr. Clutch's Incredible Flying Faceplant Show last week) have spelled the indefatigable A-Rod. Mark, as the only person to have picked A-Rod, looks to be the runaway favourite to win the contest.

Mark, if you do turn out to be the eventual winner, I'm going to need an address where I can mail you your prize. Would you do me the favor of dropping me an e-mail at craig@battersbox.ca, where I can contact you? Thanks.
_Mick - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 11:13 AM EDT (#34120) #
Craig, on behalf of Yankee fans everywhere, whaddayadoon???? Jinxin' A-Rod so he not be healthy in September, yah. Great.

WE HAVE A WINNER.

Alex Rodriguez cannot now be caught in the LABBYSTBPC sweepstakes. A-Rod has started all 19 Yankees games so far this month at third base, and so wil have started more than any other player.

This means that Mark is the winner. Mark, would you please e-mail me at craig@battersbox.ca, or alternatively let me know your e-mail in the comments here. I need a mailing address where I can send your prize... an Ichiro! T-shirt that is sure to draw lots of attention at your next George Sisler Theme Party.
