USA Today reports that Dan Plesac has decided to retire. He went out on top: the Phillies wanted him back, and were about to offer him salary arbitration.

Something I didn't know: he was the last pitcher to record an out at Veterans Stadium (the Phils are moving to a new park in 2004).

Plesac goes out of the game the way he did everything else - with class. I, for one, wish the two-time Blue Jay the best of luck in everything he does after baseball.

Good bye Dan!
You are one of the few that gave us much more than what you took ( it does not sound well,i guess, but i hope it conveys the message )

While I understand your sentiment, he did "take" about $2M per 40 innings.

Let it be remembered that Plesac is still the Brewers' all-time career team leader in ERA, WHIP, H/IP, K/IP, games, saves, games finished, and ERA+.

I remember reading somewhere (I think it was Sports Weekly) earlier this year an interview with Plesac, and he said that Toronto was his favourite among the cities that he has played in.

Last night, Wilner said, "All you had to do was point the microphone and say 'Hi, Dan,' and he'd give you ten minutes." A personable, bright guy, and a horseman, he was one my favourite players.

Plesac is a horse, in more ways than one. Apart from sitting fourth on the all-time list for pitching appearances, Dan's namesake trotter, Plesac, was a top-class performer on the track.

I believe Dan intends to become a full-time trainer on his farm in Indiana, but he'll be racing horses at Woodbine, if they're good enough, so we may see him at a few local ball games, too.

"Goodbye, Dan! "Hello, Joe!"

Does no one else remember those old "bottle of Golson Molden" commercials?

So long, Dan Plesac -- very good guy, very good pitcher, consummate pro.

Best of luck to him and his. I always thought this guy had a future in broadcasting when he was with the Jays.

I heard others say that Dan could have gone into coaching if he wanted after his playing days and I wouldn't doubt it with his personality and the praise he received for tutoring yougsters in the bullpen.

Matthew E beat me to the List of Plesac Feats.

I honestly thought he'd give it one more year with the spending the Phils have done this offseason (Wagner, Worrell, Milton), but I guess he wanted to spend some time with ihs daughters before they grew up, and he loves his horses.

A bittersweet day, and I feel the loss as he was my all-time favourite player.

It's sort of strange timing. Plesac said that he badly wanted a ring and Philly should have a shot next year. At the same time, you have to respect a man willing to make a call like this in favour of work-life balance.
