Time for the first intermission. "Two Minutes In The Box" is for hockey and hockey-related subjects. No butt-ending.
In my fantasy league, I just traded for Steve Yzerman, my favourite player. It cost me Derek Morris. Discuss.
I've actually taken to watching regular-season games on TV, something I haven't done in years. Last night's Ducks-Avalanche tilt was a lot more exciting than the neutral-zone trap days of the mid-to-late '90's. Is it possible that exposure to the inept BlackHawks soured me on the sport, thus leading to my missing a revival of good hockey? Discuss.

I'm just waiting for my beloved habs to start getting their trades going. Maybe JP and Bob Gainey should go out for lunch or something, trade secrets.
The Oil have signed the 41 year old Centre Adam Oates to a 1 year deal. I think this will work out well. The Oilers are 30th (last) in face-off percentage and have had big trouble with the Power Play. Oates will help with both areas (he looked good with Anaheim last year).

I find that it depends on the teams. Watching the Oilers v.s. Minnisota a little while back was agony (sloppy, trapping). I'd rather have the Oilers play their agressive fore-check and skating game and not get past the first round of the playoffs every year then Minny's brand of hockey.

Last year I went to a Hawks-Wild game. After the first period took maybe 25 minutes to play (if that), I turned to my father and said "These new anti-obstruction rules are really opening up the game for the good players." I then pointed out the Shots on Goal (somewhere in the neighbourhood of 7-5) and said, "too bad there aren't any good players in this game."

mathesond, I'm not sure I would have pulled the trigger on that deal.
If it's a typical Yahoo-style league, Morris' +/- and PP figures make him a stalwart on the blueline. He also contributes decent PIMs and Assist totals.
The Wings offense is spread a little thin, and while I love Yzerman, you can expect a few more nagging injuries that will rob him of valuable game time. His stat line looks great right now, but he's a centerman, and it's easier to find his kind of production on waivers (eg. Legwand, Holik) than it is an offensive defenceman's on a good team. Also, keep in mind that 34 of his 36 PIMs came in one game where he blew a gasket!
Just my $.02.

Thanks, miVulgar. I was wondering why his PIM totals were so high!
There's not much available in the way of centres in my Yahoo league -There are 15 owners. Legwand and Holik are already taken; I was playing with Langkow, Briere, and Bergeron at Centre/utility. I do have a decent defense corps - I had recently traded for Jovanovski, and have Ozolinsh - so basically, I felt that those 2 plus replacement D Brad Stuart and Yzerman were better than those Jovo/Ozolinsh/Morris/Langkow.

LOL!!!!!!!!
Mathesond traded Morris to me for Morris. I thought it was a good deal :)
I also had Holik who I would have substituded for Yzerman :)

Ahhh... in that context (your existing D-corps and the number of owners), I can completely understand the trade.
That's why I *usually* refrain from commenting on such things (i.e. not having complete knowledge of the situation).

Just so you know, Yzerman is in better health than they were suspecting and he is even playing in back to back games, something management said would not happen.
I think Yzerman has a good chance to score 30 goals this year. Also, sometimes it's worth trading for your favorite player in a league like this, just so you don't have to root against him and making it even more enjoyable when he does do well.
In an ealier deal I gave up a few good players to someone who's name I won't mention to get Joe Thornton, someone I really like.

I was out in the Bay Area for business and a wedding this past weekend, and I managed to finagle tickets to the Leafs-Sharks game in San Jose. Nice arena, and you can't beat a free NLL exhibition game afterwards! The Leafs, of course, were horribly outplayed and only managed a tie because of two brilliant Mogilny plays.
But the number of Leafs fans in San Jose was truly amazing -- I'd say at least 1200. The Leafs diaspora throughout North America is really something -- oddly, the only time when I was pretty much alone in my Leafs support on the road was in Philadelphia. Boston, Pittsburgh, the New Yorks, New Jersey, Washington, and now San Jose (along with Buffalo and the Canadian cities, of course)...all teeming with blue and white starry-eyed optimists on nights when I was lucky enough to attend.
We deserve so much better than to play so poorly as to be (justifiably) taunted by Moffatt...*sigh*

This is primarily the reason I am now more of a Raptor's fan!

It wasn't that bad. Sure the Leafs only had 17 shots, but some of them were quite good... and the Flames did have future Hall of Fame netminder Jamie McLennan in net. I hear the Flames non-Iginla payroll is upto six digits this year, so you know they'll be improved!

Seriously, though, Mike D, I don't know why you didn't have more fun in the 1980's.
Cheering for a crappy team is pretty fun. If they win, it's spectacular. If they lose, it's not a big deal, because they're supposed to lose. Not much downside.
Cheers,
Mike

The day I arrived in Chicago, in April 2001, was the day before the Leafs were in town to face the 'Hawks. My father and I finagled a pair of tickets (the first time we had been to an NHL game together in almost 20 years). We were seated behind the visitor's net; the Leafs scored the only goal of the game in the 2nd period. But of course I missed it as I was on a washroom/beer run. But I digress - in Chicago, it doesn't really matter who the visiting team is, there always seem to be a lot of Detroit jerseys in the crowd.
Of course, this year, the 'Hawks and Leafs only play each other once - and it's in T.O. Looks like I'll not be seeing any NHL action this year. (Although I did see a newspaper ad touting a women's hockey game. To paraphrase Randall from 'Clerks' - "Chicaks with sticks!")

Of course that should read "Chicks with sticks!"

I had some fun. Ken Wregget stealing a series from the Blues was plenty fun.
Your point is well taken, though, which is why it'll be so hard to ever recreate the euphoria of the '92-93 season, when expectations were typically low and the team played so well from about December on. Beating Ottawa in '02 with virtually every star out or limping was similarly invigorating.
The problem is, I still remember when I was taught how to read the standings in the paper...and it hit me, to my considerable shock and dismay, that the Leafs were comfortably in last place.
Much sadness for little Mike D.

Does anyone happen to be a Leafs Insider and know the password to access the internet presale for World Cup of Hockey 2004 tickets? They just went on sale this morning.

It's funny when the Leafs lose to Calgary, but not when they lose to Edmonton. Gee, thanks for giving our division rival 2 points. Guess we gotta stay in the cellar.
