A while ago, Twins blogger Seth Stohs wanted to identify which players had the best stats at the lowest cost, so he divided OPS by salary. That article got so much response, it spawned today's Bang For The Buck - The Remix, featuring tables like Win Shares per Million and RARP/Million. Seth, who admits he's no sabremetrician but welcomes feedback, then combines four different metrics for his final tally. The biggest bargain? Marcus Giles, by any yardstick. Vernon Wells earned his salary, too. Fun stuff; I'd like to see the team numbers.

I'd like to see the team numbers

I believe BP did this, but their archives aren't up to date so I can't find it. It was something along the lines of cost per win over a replacement level team. The results were pretty predictable.

The funny part was that the Tigers had fewer wins than replacement level.

Trade Hijack:

from Rotoworld.com
Twins acquired RHP Joe Nathan, RHP Boof Bonser and LHP Francisco Liriano from the Giants for C A.J. Pierzynski.

Here comes Mauer.

Back to the original topic, Seth's finding are interesting. I would imagine that the Jays are pretty high on the team value index.

Second, smaller hijack:

The D-Rays just signed John Halama for 600K and Paul Abbott (no terms). See: Halama, Abbott Sign With Devil Rays.

IMHO, the D-Rays got a pretty good deal on Halama. He'll make a decent back end of the rotation guy for them.

I know Nathan has proved himself a decent bullpen guy, and I know the other 2 might be decent pitching prospects, but I think this is just an awesome trade by the Giants. They got beat by a catcher in the division series, and their own catcher is a dinosaur, so they pick up a relatively cheap all-star catcher that fits their budget. I'm just amazed at how they do this every year.

Tassle, principally the Giants do this by having a number of pitching prospects available for trade. One of the benefits of having a significant number of pitching prospects (other than the obvious benefits for your own big league staff) is that the market puts a premium on cheap pitching prospects and they can always be flipped for established big league talent (with a price tag) or prospects at other positions.

I noted this on another thread that also mentioned the trade, but wasn't Boof-man one of the "untouchables" Baltimore wanted in the Ponson trade? My initial reaction to this was "steal for the Twins."

Halama was a guy I thought would be in the running for the 2003 Andujar award. I might need to re-nominate him for the 2004 version.

Reading Boof's stat line, he seems to be like a younger more advanced version of Vince Perkins. Very significant control problems, but often overpowering. Boof might be a top-of-rotation guy in 2008 or 2009.

Pierzynski is a heck of a catcher, and the Twins are apparently sending cash with him to help defray the expected arbitration increase in his salary. The Giants did well in the trade, in my opinion, as they usually have since Sabean arrived.

I am also surprised that the Twins were after pitching, rather than middle infield help.

Mick, Craig, Coach, Robert, Jordan or any other op:

Could you guys start a forum every day that is a place to discuss that day's trade rumours, trades, free agent signings, etc. I like hearing about them quickly, but the constant hijacks in different threads gets hard to follow.

Cheers,

Mike

That is a good idea.

Bonser is definitely an outstanding pitching prospect (if there is such a thing, har har har). I wouldn't say that it's a steal by the Twins, but they certainly got value out of what I consider to be an overvalued asset. (no, i will NOT back that up.)
