San Francisco Giants at Florida Marlins, 4 PM ET (Game 3)

I think Alou took Ponson out a bit early in game 2. The bullpen couldn't do the job and the scene now shifts to Florida The Marlins will face a left for the first and only time in this series, which they must take advantage of. With righthanders Jerome Williams and the seemingly invincible Jason Schmidt to pitch games 4 and 5, this game is more important for Florida than for San Francisco.

Lefthanders hit the ball hard off Redman when they make contact. Even though his strikeout rate is much greater versus lefthanded hitters that righthanders, the former have been a little more successful overall. Bonds will get 3 walks in 5 plate appearances.

With 7 righties and a lefty with a reverse platoon split, the Giants should score some runs today. I had to double check Marquis Grissom's numbers because I could hardly believe them.

Kirk Rueter (2002/2003)

Have you guys seen that Proline commercial with the muscle relaxant? Kirk Rueter is like Tom Glavine on that stuff. He'll pitch around both righties and lefties more often than Glavine and he'll let you put the ball in play all day. You can't steal off him, so your best hope is for your righthanded batters to drive in the walks with extra base hits. I don't know if he'd be nearly as effective in a hitter's park, but he won't have to worry about that in this series. It's unusual to see a good lefthanded starter with such a huge left-righty split.

On paper, the Giants starters match up extremely well against Florida. We've established that the Marlins are weak against righthanded pitchers. Today, they are going to have a hard time running because of Rueter. The silver lining is that Rueter doesn't strike a lot of guys out, so you may see a bunch of hit and run attempts by the Fish.

Robert, Fine analysis. Want a job as a colour guy?

It's unusual to see a good lefthanded starter with such a huge left-righty split.

But isn't that just Rueter in a nutshell? The man absolutely defies traditional analysis.

His K/9 has been so low for so long that any conventional forecasting model would have him had crash and burn years ago.

His BB/9, while good, is not the Quisenberry good you'd expect from someone who doesn't strike anyone out.

And his HR/9 is okay though not great.

He does shut down the running game, but that alone shouldn't be enough for him to have succeeded for so long.

Ugh. Marquis Grissom should be caned for such a bone-headed move. Trying to steal 3rd base with one out against Ivan Rodriguez with Alfonzo batting is the height of idiocy. He ran them out of a gilt-edged scoring opportunity in a tie game.

Crikey, and Alfonzo eventually walked as well!

The Giants could have had the bases loaded with 1 out...

Exactly. Luckily for the Giants, Felix Rodriguez has picked up the offense so far. They've stranded double-digit base-runners today.

What an ending ! Great hitting, Pudge!

I have to ask myself if it's a good idea to leave a guy who's used to throwing 15-20 pitches in a game where he's thrown over 40 pitches. I'm not sure who they could have brought in, but it was obvious Worrel was tiring. If he weren't a mystical "closer" he'd have been pulled somewhere in the middle of that inning.

Worrell has nothing to apologize for, given his stellar fielding in a situation where he was getting by on fumes and guts. Cruz, however, does. Terrible fielding error after failing to manage a sacrifice fly to get an insurance run. The Giants as a team left 18 runners on base.
_Nigel - Friday, October 03 2003 @ 08:30 PM EDT (#89207) #
The papers tomorrow will kill Worrell but the loss should clearly fall on Cruz's shoulders. Earlier in the game he failed to do much with the bases loaded and one out. Then he kills them in both ends of the inning.
robertdudek - Friday, October 03 2003 @ 08:32 PM EDT (#89208) #
I don't blame Worrell - he pitched his guts out. But you have to question the wisdom of leaving him in there that long.
_Donkit R.K. - Friday, October 03 2003 @ 08:42 PM EDT (#89209) #
Who was left to pick from? I thought that I would have left Worrell out to pitch the rest of that inning regardless fo what happened, and that the Giants had to win in the 11th. Unless I'm missing someone who could have pitched, I thought the bull pen would have coughed it up on the Giants anyway. It was, however, a Hell of a game and I gotta give props to Worrell anyway.

Doesn't Alou have 12 pitchers on his roster? There must have been someone.
