A juicy matchup between Kevin Millwood and rookie sensation Dontrelle Willis. Florida can virtually lock up the wildcard by taking 2 out of 3 after a convincing victory over Mike Hampton and the Atlanta Braves Monday night.

Oakland once again dismissed the Texas Rangers with relative ease. Jamie Moyer's great effort fell short of a shutout because a throwing error in the 9th allowed the only Angel run to score. Seattle's TV guys waxed poetic about Moyer's Cy Young candidacy, but even Buhner had to admit that Doc's 250+ innings look awfully good. Boston inched closer to the wildcard by beating the limp Orioles.

Houston held Barry Bonds to an 0 for 4 day (no walks!) but failed to convert their large edge in hits into more than a 3-2 lead. Frisco tied the game on 4 consecutive walks in the 7th. In the top of the 9th, minor closing diety Billy Wagner gave up back-to-back jacks and the Giants prevailed 6-3.

Much to Coach's chagrin, the south fish look ready to return to the playoffs. Kudos to Florida for putting two dead-ball slap hitters at the top of their lineup (Juan Pierre and Luis Castillo) - Pro Players is a great place to play little ball. The Dodgers were pummeled by San Diego: Trevor Hoffman pitched a mopup ninth, giving up a run on two hits while striking out the side. It looks like LA is toast.

Thanks for the update, Robert. How'd you get to watch the M's game with Ron Fairly, Dave Niehaus and crew?

Much to Coach's chagrin, the south fish look ready to return to the playoffs.

Either way, I'll have mixed emotions. I dislike Larry Bowa intensely, and it would serve him right to get the axe, but Jeffrey Loria is despicable, so it would be a shame for him to get any playoff revenue. But with home field in the big series, and a much easier opponent this weekend, I have to admit the Marlins are in the driver's seat. Really, the Giants are the only NL contender I like, and the Astros are tolerable.

I second your comments on the Phillies and Marlins. Thome and Abreu are great, but I can't stomach cheering for a jerk like Bowa.

So...the only logical alternative is the Cubs. Go Cubs!

Actually, they are a pretty easy team to cheer for. Kerry Wood and Mark Prior are awesome, and I'm also a big fan of Aramis Ramirez.

The _Cubs_!? Eww.

Just the Giants is fine. I like this Marlis team, though (while all the while despising the ownership, I really like this team... scrappers and overachievers, not a lot of famous faces).

Today Jayson Stark at ESPN goes off the wrong way for those who think A-Rod is this year's MVP based on numbers. For Stark, his three candidates are Tajada or Chavez from the A's or (and this is the kicker) Shannon Stewart because of the impact he's had since arriving in the Twin Cities.

Check out the whole thing here.

That didn't come out right...There are too many things going on right now. I'm sure everyone gets the jist. Deepest apologies to those who don't.

Hated the Stark article.

ESPN does have another prominent columnist with the opposite opinion, so at least they are being balanced.

I guess Stark is a member of the lunatic fringe Neyer was referring to :)

However, there is some subtle humour provided by the editors at ESPN. When you click on the survey link from the Stark article, the four available AL MVP candidates are:

Arod
Delgado
Manny
Garrett Anderson

No Tejada and no Chavez :)

Arod is narrowly ahead of Manny in the survey.

The other current leaders:

NL MVP: Pujols (by a hair over Bonds)
AL CY: Halladay (by a landslide)
NL CY: Gagne
AL ROY: Baldelli
NL ROY: Dontrelle Willis (my choice would be Webb)

I *love* this point from one of Neyer's readers...It's sheer brilliance and I will now take A-Rod's side for MVP.

Rob, just read your column plugging A-Rod for MVP. The best argument I know of: He's put up the numbers he has while not facing the worst pitching in the majors (that of his own team) even once this season. Imagine if he got to face the Rangers a dozen times or more each season!

This isn't pennant related, but in non-Jays news, check out the post-trade stats of these two players:

Player A: 294/392/459, 19 runs, 3 HR, 16 RBI in 99 PA
Player B: 311/440/574, 12 runs, 3 HR, 12 RBI in 73 PA

Player A is Brian Giles. Player B is Jason Bay, whom the Pirates acquired from the Padres along with Oliver Perez and a PTBNL. It's far too early to say Bay will be as good as Giles or to say that the Pirates "won" this trade. But I will chalk this up to interesting and leave it at that.
