With a voodoo doll on his side, Mike Maroth hopes to avoid making history tonight as the first pitcher in 23 years to lose 20 games in a season. It seems inevitable, as the hard-luck lefty should make at least four more starts this year, all against tough opposition. He's a much better pitcher than his 6-19 record suggests, and did beat the Jays here June 30, allowing just two runs in seven innings. A semi-regular reader of this space actually predicted a 20-loss campaign for Maroth back in spring training. Nice call.

Carlos Tosca loads up on righty bats, with Reed Johnson and Mike Bordick at the top of the order, and Dave Berg filling in at second base. Kevin Cash will catch Mark Hendrickson. The big fella was abandoned by his listless mates in a 5-0 whitewash at Comerica on Canada Day. His 4-5, 7.29 home split isn't pretty, and his last two starts haven't been great, but Lurch did spin seven strong innings August 21 at the Dome against Seattle. This is a game he is supposed to win, and he's still trying to establish his role for next year. Mark's only slightly ahead of Josh Towers, who has been named Sunday's starter, allowing Escobar to face the Yankees Monday on normal rest.

This part of the season makes me nervous. For the next month, the Jays have no excuses - they're facing the dregs of the league, they've been about .500 so far and they have no injuries. From here on out they're going to have to put up or shut up.

2-0 Detroit in the top of the first. Sigh...

Take a look at the most similar pitchers to Brian Kingman:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/k/kingmbr01.shtml

#3 on the list is Mark Lemongello.

Carlos Tosca is serving a one-game suspension, so John Gibbons is the interim manager.

In March, I suggested that Hendrickson would be valuable as a long man who could turn lineups around a couple of times a week. I've been patient with him; a rookie, learning at this level, isn't supposed to dominate. Mark needs to settle down tonight and have a strong September if he wants to be guaranteed a spot in next year's rotation.

Boom! Eric Hinske ties it with a 2-run shot. That pitch didn't do much; it was like hitting off a tee.
Craig B - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 07:34 PM EDT (#92617) #
I remember when this team used to hit home runs like that!

Of course, they used to score lots of runs too.
Craig B - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 07:39 PM EDT (#92618) #
AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

What's the *worst* thing Torres can do off you? Hit a single? I would throw that guy *nothing* but strikes.
Craig B - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 07:44 PM EDT (#92619) #
Just to underline that point, Torres has nine extra-base hits in 214 at-bats in his career. He has a .274 career slugging percentage, and he's leading off the inning. If you don't start that guy with strike one, you don't belong on that mound.

The thing that drives me nuts about Hendrickson is that (this is totally off the cuff) he isn't nearly aggressive enough with the hitters early in an inning. When the bases are empty, that's when you can afford to come after guys! Yet when there are men on base, he manages to blow that 88mph heat right by guys. It's perplexing.
Coach - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 07:55 PM EDT (#92620) #
Confidence is a wonderful thing. Josh Phelps is a wonderful hitter. Lurch had given up three more runs, but Josh got two back with another blast after a Delgado walk.
Gitz - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 07:57 PM EDT (#92621) #
Hoorah for Phelps! Someone explain, please, why Dave Berg was taking his at-bats from Josh a while back?
_Jabonoso - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 08:02 PM EDT (#92622) #
Now Tanyon is in the mound to proof he belongs. Mark is so compassionate he would not allow Maroth to get 20th.

I have a major problem with bringing in Sturtze to any game right now. Why did they bring Chulk up if it wasn't to pitch in exactly this type of game? The whole point of bringing them up it to get to see them over the month in situations where they have something other than just mop up duty but also in situations where they may succeed. If this isn't one of those situations (it's the Tigers for crying out loud) then what is?
Coach - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 08:13 PM EDT (#92624) #
Nigel, they could be working on something with Chulk and he isn't "available" today, or they might want to use him in the later innings. There are a lot of righties in that 'pen; I don't know if anybody knows their exact role.

Nice work by Berg, Cash, Sparky and Bordick to score three runs for a 7-5 lead. Maroth stands to lose it; he's done.

Furthermore, this is totally unlike playing Myers against the Yankees ahead of Cash. In that case you are: a) making sure you field your best team due to playoff implications; b) rewarding a guy who has had a fantastic year; and c) not irritating him too much with a view to possibly resigning him next year. Relative to those 3 points for Tanyon, a) it's Detroit (enough said); b) Tanyon has sucked all year (enough said); c) Tanyon sucked before he came here, he's sucked while he's been here and he will continue to suck long after he has left (enough said). There, I got that out of my system now I can go back to happily enjoying the game.
_Nigel - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 08:19 PM EDT (#92627) #
Coach, you could be right about Chulk and if so, fine. But there are two other guys down there, Bowles and Reichert that theoretically they are going to make decisions on by the end of the year. They can't all be working on something. In my view both Bowles and Reichert will be toast but its a lot closer call than Sturtze so let's get on with it.
Coach - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 08:31 PM EDT (#92628) #
Tonight's lineup vs. lefties, with Cat, Myers, Hudson and Woodward in there vs. righties, means Tom Wilson and Howie Clark are pinch-hitters who won't see a lot of innings or AB.

Nigel, your rant has inspired Sturtze to two scoreless innings. Berg made a strong turn on that double play; with Monroe in his face, he threw a hard one-hopper that Delgado scooped nicely.
Coach - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 08:43 PM EDT (#92629) #
The power is out in Puerto Rico, the Expos game (1-0 Marlins in the fourth) suspended. The Red Sox bombed Andy Pettitte and lead 8-0 in the fifth.

Sturtze got himself in trouble with a couple of walks, but allowed just one run in the sixth. It's 8-6, and Pete Walker is ready.

New Haven is winning 7-1 in the 7th, D Bush started the game.
Dunedin- St Lucie postponed
_Nigel - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 08:55 PM EDT (#92631) #
On another happier note, New Haven is pounding New Britain 6-1 in the 7th. No idea who has done the scoring damage but Bush was the starter.

Doh! Beat me by a second!

to spread confusion, our eigth inning specialist just pitched a perfect seventh.

New Haven pounded out 19 hits for the 8-1 win. Bush got the win and the Rock Cats were held to 3 hits the entire night.

I can't wait to get my Bush '04 bumper stickers!

Dunedin was rained out and from what I heard it might be awhile before they can play again. The forcast was for 10-15 inches of rain.
Gerry - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 10:14 PM EDT (#92638) #
Earlier in the week Tosca said that Chulk will be used in a non pressure situation = Jays winning by 8 or losing by 5.

I was at the game! Woohoo! A witness to history!

Three friends of mine and I decided, at the last moment, to spring for 100-level seats (the first time I'd been there in three years). We wound up in the same section as Tiger GM Dave Dombrowski (who wore a name tag identifying himself as such). Dombrowski, understandably, looked unhappy, like a man carrying a giant weight on his shoulders. I didn't try to chat with him, as I wasn't sure what to say. What could you say? "Gee, Dave, how does it feel to be competing against the 1962 Mets for worst team of all time?" "Well, Dave, at least you know your team sucks, which puts you ahead of Baltimore."

I can tell you that Dombrowski did not do the "OK Blue Jays" seventh-inning exercise routine, nor did he sing along to "Take Me Out To The Ballgame".

By the ninth inning, I was actually tense. Would they do it, or would Kevin Witt (Kevin Witt!) tie the game in the ninth with a home run?

We tried to find Brian Kingman in the stands, but we had no idea where he was.

Josh Phelps is Da Man.

I haven't enjoyed a game this much in years.

New Haven pounded out 19 hits for the 8-1 win. Bush got the win and the Rock Cats were held to 3 hits the entire night.

Is there a box score yet, or just the high-level summary from ESPN?

Pistol,

Re the Bush 04 bumper sticker...David shares one thing with W, a mean streak. In the FSL, he had an absurdly low walk rate and an absurdly high HBP rate. Shall we say that he has excellent selective control?
Dave Till - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 10:37 PM EDT (#92642) #
One more note: we were expecting more pitching changes, but tonight the bullpen was used relatively sparingly: Sturtze pitched three innings, Politte did the seventh, Miller the eighth, and Lopez the ninth. I didn't realize until I got home that Tosca was serving a one-game suspension. Aha.

Maroth's 20th loss is already the lead story on USA Today's baseball site.
_Cristian - Friday, September 05 2003 @ 11:20 PM EDT (#92643) #
I feel bad for Maroth who obviously deserves a better fate. However, I am ecstatic that Brian Kingman will no longer pop up in September of every season getting free publicity.

In other Canadian baseball news, things don't look good for the Edmonton Trappers who are losing 5-0 to Sacramento already down 2-0 in their best of five PCL playoff series. By my count they've already been outscored 31-7 by the River Cats. Sacramento cruised through the AAA season going 92-52. I was optimistic when the A's called up Bobby Crosby from AAA but that River Cats team is stacked with talent. They lost Harden 2 months ago and they haven't missed a beat.

Once the Trappers are eliminated, I'll officially get on the 'free Terrmel Sledge' bandwagon.

The Jays announced their minor league MVP's. No real surprises I guess. COMN.

AAA- Pond
AA- Rios
FSL A- Harper
Sally A- Medina, Rodney (hard to choose anyone here)
NYP- Vito
Appy League- Robinson Diaz
Dominican League- Edward Rodriguez

I guess the only surprise is that D.J. Hanson wasn't chosen for MVP of the Sally. I would have chose him. His end of the year line was 10-10, 138.1 IP, 110 H's, 113 SO's, 56 BB's, 2.54 ERA.

Is it safe to say that Lopez has become the closer for the rest of this year, and possibly next?
