Consider this a catch-all thread to discuss whatever's on people's minds this long weekend. Andy Pettitte vs. Pedro Martinez at Fenway should be interesting. The Expos. Those crazy Central Division races. The BBFL. Eric Gagne's Cy Young chances.
Wilner is talking about us on The FAN right now.
With Bill Hayes on The Baseball Show, Wilner suggested "consider the source" was an appropriate response to the Star's baseball coverage. He said some very kind things about Da Box. Asked about relations between the team and the media, Mike singled out one of his colleagues.
"The players don't like Geoff Baker," he said, "because of the White Jays piece. I don't know if they have their favourites."
It's a two way street, of course. "Certain players are hard to deal with, they're idiots."
Wilner thinks a deadline deal would come as a relief to tonight's starter. "Chances are Cory Lidle doesn't have the best impression of Toronto." His wife was afraid of SARS, he didn't like the 4-man rotation idea, he's been hurt and now he's on the trading block.
"If he pitches well, it's likely he's not a Blue Jay tomorrow." Mike thinks they might get a C prospect if his new team takes on the contract, or the Jays might eat the contract and get a better prospect.
On roster expansion, he expects Thurman and Clark to join the already announced Bowles and Reichert, with "maybe" Gabe Gross the only youngster getting a look.
They are about to replay the interview where J.P. blasts the Star

Without Manny Ramirez, the Red Sox are making a loud statement. A triple by Nomar made it 2-0, and Millar cashed in the third run in the bottom of the first.
The Yankees answered back with two in the third, and knocked Pedro out with three in the fourth. Pettitte fanned Kevin Millar with two on and two out in the fifth to preserve a 5-4 Yankees lead. It's a heavyweight fight, and the momentum has changed.
Pedro has nothing today; you could see it even in the first. His fastball is barely touching 90 and his curve keeps spinning and hanging up in the zone.
What really are the chances of Lidle being moved before September? Do you think JP will settle on a C prospect, or be a little more stubborn and end up hanging onto him for the rest of this season (that's what I feel will happen)?
wilner said on the baseball show that if the jays accept to pay the rest of lidle's salary than they might be able to get something of value for him.
Left field bleachers today. Wanted to see how the plebes watch baseball.
Jason Kershner, who was fielding during BP, tossed us a ball when we shouted out his name. Hendrickson didn't oblige.
Congrats on the wilner mentions boys. You deserve it.

Much better than being moved in September....
As I wrote in the game log, there's nothing to lose in trading Lidle, and only things to gain, even if it's a marginal A ball prospect.

Gagne's second in Pitching Win Shares to... Livan Hernandez.
How about that?
Someone was trying to tell me (actually, it was Mike of Mike's Baseball Rants) that Bill James kinda dropped the ball when it came to awarding WS for relievers and closers. In other words, that Gagne's high WS total wasn't indicative that he really deserves the Cy Young.
Sorry, I'm too lazy to include HTML links today.
