If you saw Josh Towers the other night, especially in the adrenalin-charged ninth inning, it's hard to believe he isn't going to stay in the rotation. But with Pete Walker and Cory Lidle ready to return, someone has to be odd man out, says Spencer Fordin on the Official Site:

The Jays are just taking their time in naming Tuesday's starter, waiting to see how things shake out over the weekend. With an off-day next Thursday, the Jays can afford to mull every option. For now, Towers is on hand as a contingency plan, a handy fallback option if Walker or Lidle gets knocked around. Tosca said that was a natural role for Towers, but that he still projects as a starter over the long haul.

"I think he's probably a little more suited to be a starter or a long man," he said. "His strength is his control. His changeup is improving, and that's going to be a big pitch for him."

I prefer Walker in the 'pen and would give Towers a regular turn for the rest of the year. Presumably, Brian Bowles will be returned to AAA to make room for Pete on Saturday (new papa Cliff Politte will be back from St. Louis, with at least his arm well rested) but the bigger question is, who gets shipped out when Lidle is activated? If it's Towers, I'll be upset; my two cents is on Reichert. Perhaps someone will develop a timely injury, like Josh Phelps' earlier back spasms.

Rosters expand soon enough anyway so it's probably moot, but, of Bowles, Kershner, Lopez, Miller, Politte, Reichert, Sturtze, Towers, and Walker, who here has zero chance of playing on a '04 Blue Jays squad? Not that it would happen for the obvious reasons, but Tanyon, if you listen quietly, you can hear the "Given His Unconditional Release" Gods calling out to you.

Does Reichert have any chance of pitching for the Jays next year?

Reichert is very talented but still hasn't shown he can actually pitch, so I doubt it. Maybe a minor league deal.

I think all of these roster decisions depend on how many roster spots are available. Off the top of my head, Gabe Gross and Dustin McGowan need to be added to the 40-man this offseason. I'm sure there are others.

Spicol,

Are you sure about Gross? He was drafted in 2001. McGowan and Negron would be the first round picks from 2000.

I'm nearly certain. Essentially, a team has exclusive rights to a player for 3 minor league seasons after he is drafted, or for 4 years if that player was younger than 19 when drafted. After that, he has to be added to the 40-man lest he be exposed to the major league draft as dictated by Rule V (yes, I just used 'lest' in a sentence and no, I have not been reading the King James Bible). Gross will have played 3 seasons and was older than 19 when he was drafted so the Jays have to add him. McGowan was drafted before he was 19, which explains his extra year.

The 40 man roster rules are another reason to like college players over HS players. It's the difference between adding a 24 year old in AAA or a 22 year old in A to the 40 man roster.

Add Griffin, Gassner and Arnold to the list of those who have to be added along with possible additions Godwin, Reimers, Harper, Pond, Sequea, Alvarez, Clark, Bauer, Fagan and Perkins

Maybe calling Towers "odd" is descriptive of his personality. Also, it does desribe his K-Rate.

Wearing a single digit number is odd for a pitcher.....

Mcgowan just keeps getting better. Tonight, over 8 innings: 5h, 0er, 1bb, 1wp and 8so. As unfair as it may be to take starts away from the likes of Evan Thomas, I wonder if it's not time to give him a cab chit to Syracuse.

McGowan might stay to pitch in the playoffs for New Haven. He will pitch Wednesday or Thursday and be set to pitch game one of the playoffs. He would only get one start for Syracuse.
