There are few players whose 2003 development is being watched more closely by management than Corey Thurman. The 2002 Rule 5 pick from Kansas City pitched effectively enough last season, mostly in low-pressure relief outings, then spent most of the current season polishing his craft as a starter in Syracuse. In his first start following his most recent (and hopefully final) callup, last time in Anaheim, was a solid effort to defeat the nosediving World Champions; tonight, though, his work is cut out for him. Into Skydome come the Texas Rangers, a team that treats the Jays' home field like its own personal BP cage.

If Corey can keep the Rangers in check, it will be a strong sign that he figures into the rotation plans for 2004, something the team desperately needs. Happily for him, the Jays' batters face converted reliever R.A. Dickey, who has been effective against Toronto out of the bullpen this season but whose ERA is still hovering just under 5. Runs and hits could be plentiful, but watch the performance of the man on the mound for the home team. With Coach at the game and your humble correspondent otherwise engaged, the microphone is open for all and sundry to engage in play-by-play and colour analysis. Lurkers, this is a prime opportunity to de-lurk! Enjoy the game, all, and have a great weekend.

Cheers. For those who don't know me, I'm Coach's ESPN counterpart for the Rangers.

Dickey's ERA does indeed hover around five, but it's lower than any other starter on the team. Dickey has a good fastball, an improving change-up, and not much else. He tends to give up a lot of hits and gets out of innings by the skin of his teeth. This will be Dickey's 5th career start, and he doesn't have much endurance; he won't cross the 100-pitch barrier. If he supplies what passes for a quality start in Rangerland (5 innings, 3 runs), I'll be happy. Toronto has a good chance to light him up.

Spencer, Nix and Nivar weren't with the team when they last played Toronto. Spencer you know about: a so-so outfielder who goes yard on occasion. He has a .688 OPS with Texas. Nix is a solid long-term prospect, but he struggled a bit in AA and has at times looked overmatched in the Majors. He has three dingers in 65 at-bats but also sports a 4/21 BB/K ratio. Nivar is a speedster who swings at everything. Nivar hit .337 with 5 walks and 5 Ks in about 95 plate appearances in AA. Frankly, I think the Rangers extended the youth movement a little too far with his call-up. He's electric in the field and on the basepaths but hadn't played above A-ball before this year. Another newbie outfielder, Jason Jones, should see some action.

Nix and Nivar do make for a dramatically improved defensive outfield, something the Rangers haven't had in a long time.

Enjoy the game.

Scott, check out the Advance Scout. Your additional comments would be much appreciated.

The top of the first inning of play is Exhibit A why Texas should keep Blalock and Teixeira in the fold for a long, long time. Wow.

If I could just please ask, before anyone tries to type away the damage, let's keep from placing unreasonable hopes on a Cory Thurman.
I wish them all the best, but any '04 Blue Jays rotation that has both a Hendrickson or a Thurman in it is in for bad, bad news, and will be no where near possible contention. The Hendrickson's, the Thurman's, the Chulk's, the Smith's and perhaps sadly the Arnold's are perhaps 5th starters at best--in my opinion as of this date.

I hope Cory Thurman has a nice career doing something for someone, but let's not excuse away the fact that he is no great pitching prospect. And WOW does Texas have some hitting studs, are they not going to be the best hitting club for the next five/six years or what?

A nice little Tanyon Sturtze impression from Corey Thurman. Now here comes the real McCoy.

Hey Mike,

I didn't even see the Advanced Scout until after I'd posted. I had a lonnnng week and my brain is a little fried.

Nice of the Rangers to bat around during my drive home from work. I think I could sit down to a full viewing of "Gandhi" or "2001" and still catch the last three innings of this game.

A fine outing from T. Sturtze. Yep, you read that right.

4 2/3IP, 5BB, 2H, 0ER, 0K

Perhaps it's time to lock Sturtze up with a long term contract and ship Thurman off to St Louis for a bag of baseballs...;-)

At the game right now on a handheld - biggest qualm. What the hell is with the breakdancers on the dugout roofs? Are we in Compton or something? Give me a friggin' break - that isn' baseball...

I thought it was funny that when security caught the guy running on the field, they took him off to the Jays' bullpen. Clearly the word is out... if you want to punish someone, that's where you take them.

Sturtze did OK, he got bailed out with a bunch of double play balls but even though he was giving up baserunners at least it was just singles and didn't amount to runs.

Now Kershner has pitched *really* well.

Looked like the right call to me at first base.

Well Corey Thurman was dissappointing tonite. Not the kind of performance we were hoping for. But I think wat was interesting was that Cerruti and Faulds were saying that if Lidle cant go on Sunday then the Jays might consider giving Thurman another start that day considering that he only threw 38 pitches tonite. Now that is stupid. I say just call up someone and let them start. See this is what pisses me off about the Jays. Anyways Thurman should not be considered to start on Sunday again.
_Rich - Friday, August 08 2003 @ 10:12 PM EDT (#95224) #
Come on; Thurman gets lit up one time and suddenly he's not much of a prospect? After his last start everyone was saying that he has proven he will be a fixture in the rotation next year. Now he gets rocked and is suddenly maxed out as a fifth starter?

He's young, he has good stuff, and the Jays need to keep sending him out there to start the rest of this season and find out if he can help in the long-term or not. None of this, "let's give him 4 or 5 starts against lousy teams a-la-Lyon/Hendrickson", and then the club still can't determine his potential.

I'm not saying Thurman is going to be a stud; my point his he needs 10 starts or so to show what he can or can't do. It's a bit premature to start writing him off.

What do you mean? They've had weeks like that before.

a team that treats the Jays' home field like its own personal BP cage

The Jays were kind enough to give me a media pass yesterday, and I was downtown for a meeting anyway, so I arrived very early. My first thought was, what's Hank Blalock doing taking extra BP? Here's a guy who's been in a zone most of the year, who's going to get plenty of time in the cage at 5:30, working on his swing. One of the first things I said to John Neary when we met just before game time was that Blalock, who was pounding pitches off the third and fourth decks a few hours earlier, would have a great night. When Laynce Nix stepped in, I barely got the words out of my mouth -- "this guy was almost as impressive as Hank in early BP" -- before he ended Thurman's evening.

Even though the loss was disappointing, I had a terrific day. John's great company at a game, and we got to see some excellent defence and a masterful outing by Kershner (I would have pitched around A-Rod, but he had the nerve of a cat-burglar). Before the game, I renewed acquaintances with the coaches and some of the "real" media -- a Mike Wilner interview is planned -- and there were a couple of exciting new developments concerning the Jays.

Reed Johnson will be stepping into Da Box early next week. Who better to lead off our major league player interviews? We chatted for 15 minutes about a number of things, including getting hit by pitches (just another way to help the team) and his BB nickname (either "Sparky" or the more formal "Sparkplug" is just fine).

During the next road trip, there will be an "Ask J.P." thread, where you'll be able to post questions. He'll be reading them when he has a chance, and when the team returns, probably during the Seattle series, we'll do a sit-down interview in which he'll answer as many as he can in the allotted time.

Since its inception, I've had no idea where this site was going, choosing to simply enjoy the ride, but something tells me we've arrived.

You mean like Avecedo getting released?

Coach, what can I say but WOW. It's great to see so many people with the Jays being so affordable with their time. Keep up the good, no make that great, work.

JP was on the radio during the 7th inning. He said there would be only a few call-ups in September. Jerry Howarth asked him about the impact early call-ups have on qualification for arbitration and free agency. JP appeared to agree that was a consideration.

He continued to downplay expectations for the starting pitchers saying they were a year, 2 years, and a half-year away. He continued to preach "the only way to a strong starting rotation is to develop them yourself" (other than buy them - Yankees style). Jerry asked him if he had a closer down there. He mentioned Peterson.

Coach,

I had a fever, and the only prescription was...more Reed Johnson. Fantastic news!

Wow indeed. This site has been a fantastic success and it's been matched by extremely personable and reseptive Blue Jays management, players and media. Congradulations to everyone.
