Joe "Hardy" Kennedy, whose agent must be named Applegate, has never lost to Toronto. The young man is suffering from a sore back and a crisis of confidence -- four hits, three walks and five earned runs in just one inning last time out, along with hints that this is his last chance to avoid demotion -- so it will be interesting to see how he can continue his miraculous success facing a team that always finds a way to make him look good. Kennedy is 3-8, 6.48 this year with an opponent's average of .321; without his 2-0, 3.86, .221 in two previous starts against the Jays, those numbers are truly horrible. The exorcism of this demon is long overdue.

No stranger to the "stopper" role, Roy Halladay goes for his 16th win. I'm reluctant to mention this, given the bizarre events between the teams in 2003, but Doc is just 1-1, 4.58 in five career starts vs. the Rays, who sport a .320 average against him. However, that's ancient history; he was 1-0 in two starts last year, and they haven't seen him at all this season.

The Jays need to get back to .500 today and do some damage against Texas this weekend; they sure don't want to begin 14 straight against the M's and A's with the wheels falling off. As you might expect, Berg starts at 2B for one-sided switch-hitter Hudson; Hinske, who's hit Kennedy well in the past, must ignore his motormouth antagonist again.

Well, Kennedy's got a no-hitter through three innings. So this should be fun.

Good work jinxing the opposition by saying the magic words "no-hitter" :)

Woo-hoo! An actual lucky break! Vernon Wells scored all the way from first on an error by Anderson; 1-0 Jays. Of course, if it was any other opponent, Kennedy would be trailing 5-0 by now.

Mark: Just trying to help the team.

Good old Berg. Wilson was aboard after a leadoff single, and David hit a 2-run shot to regain the lead, 3-2.

I'm listening on the radio so I really don't know, but it sounds like Doc's fastball is too straight again (6 hits in 4 IP) and he will be forced to rely on the curve.

I guess Berg's vertigo is officially cured now - 2 run HR gives the lead back to the good guys.

Bobby Kielty adds a 2-run blast; the Kennedy curse is over.

I have no proof of any kind, but I silently predicted that home run just before it happened.

Halliday is at 75 pitches through 6 IP. He will probably be over 100 after 8. So, if it is still a 5-2 game in the bottom of the ninth what would you do?

Send Halliday out again, despite the pitch count?

Politte, Acevedo, or a cast of thousands (or atleast three).

Josh Phelps' third hit of the day was a mammoth blast into the catwalk on an 0-2 pitch; it's 6-2.

if it is still a 5-2 game in the bottom of the ninth what would you do?

If I'm Tosca, what I do is to let every reliever I have throw exactly one pitch. If, at the end of all that, the game still isn't over, I pitch myself.

Don't give him any ideas

Hey Gil! You look bored at the end of that bench. Get in there!
Coach - Wednesday, August 06 2003 @ 04:37 PM EDT (#95425) #
I don't usually get excited about a 1-for-5, but Mike Bordick just extended his hit streak to 15 games, and I'm happy for him.

Doc's at a mere 94 pitches through eight, with the bottom of the order coming up. If he doesn't get at least two of the first three out, it'll probably be Miller time, with four lefty batters on deck.

Hey Gil! You look bored at the end of that bench. Get in there!

Oh, this is bad, this is really bad! You work, and you slave, and you steal just enough for a sweet lick of that shiny brass ring... don't I get a lick? Doesn't Gil get a lick?

Gil

If I'm Halladay, I'm not letting any of those sock-sniffing cheese-eaters in the bullpen get within a mile of my shiny new win.

Thank goodness.

Brief hijack: The Yankees traded Armando Benitez to Seattle for Jeff Nelson.

Stupid Mariners.

Another brief...just received a ticket push from the Jays for the August 10th game against the Rangers...first 15,000 receive a "commerative poster". Bloody idits.
_Sulsal - Wednesday, August 06 2003 @ 11:03 PM EDT (#95431) #
On the blue jays site it says cory lidle has been pitching thru a couple of ailments so he says he might skip the next start. so this could be a chance to finally see Jason Arnold or whoever else, just as long as its not Lidle. I really hope Jays call up Jason Arnold. lets see if he is as good as the hype.
anyways see ya lota later
Gerry - Thursday, August 07 2003 @ 10:47 AM EDT (#95432) #
The Star report today also mentions that Lidle has shoulder and groin problems and may miss some time.
_Rob C - Thursday, August 07 2003 @ 03:07 PM EDT (#95433) #
Kudos on the Simpsons soundbite...

I hear shoulder and groin problems can happen when your disgruntled teammates wrap bars of soap in towels, sneak up on you while you're sleeping, and let you have it Full-Metal-Jacket-style.

But I'm sure that doesn't happen in this day and age... Right?
_Spicol - Thursday, August 07 2003 @ 09:45 PM EDT (#95434) #
Apparently, Lidle has been intimating that he might not pitch again this year.
_Eric C - Thursday, August 07 2003 @ 10:19 PM EDT (#95435) #
So if Lidle is out for the season or misses a start, who gets the start on Sunday?

Acording to Mike Ganter, Lidle might be ready to go on Sunday with an extra day of rest.

Lidle, who is scheduled to start Sunday against the Texas Rangers, will throw off flat ground tomorrow and then will make a decision about that game. Jays manager Carlos Tosca said he felt that with an extra day of rest -- the Jays are off today -- Lidle would be ready to go on Sunday.

If he can't make that start, then does Kershner get the start? Or maybe Chulk, Wasdin (shudder) or Arnold get called up? Arnold hasn't pitched well in Syracuse, although he did have a fine performance today, and I'll rather have him making AAA starts. Chulk has been pitching very well of late, and he might have a future in this organization, starting or relieving.
