We may be nearing the "dog days" in real baseball, but in the Batter's Box Fantasy League, there are just five weeks remaining in the regular season, so this is crunch time. An amazing twelve teams are within two games of finishing sixth or better to qualify for a spot in the championship playoff round, and no less than 17 of 20 are still in the postseason picture.

The runaway leader Gashouse Gorillas remain on cruise control, having whipped Mebion Glyndwr 8-3 last week to open up a 16.5 game lead. There's a dead-heat for second between my Toronto Walrus (8-4 winners over masssuckage) and Baird Brain (7-5 winners over Springfield Isotopes) but Billie's Bashers are very much in the hunt for the other first-round bye after trouncing Jicks Rays 9-2. Red Mosquitos jumped from seventh into fifth place with a 7-3 defeat of K-Town Mashers. Then it gets really close.

Nation Builders, after losing 9-2 to the Thunderbirds (who I can assure you are tough right now) are currently sixth, with a narrow half-game lead on three teams: Reykjavik Fish Candy, Sub-Urban Shockers and AGF. Three more clubs -- K-Town, Mebion and Jicks -- are just one game farther back. That's a total of seven teams bunched within a game and a half of playing for the T-shirt. Reykjavik, whose GM Mike Moffatt was last seen waving the white flag, stormed back into contention and contributed to tightening the standings with a 9-2 win over AGF.

Our trade deadline has come and gone rather quietly. The Sub-Urban Shockers made the final two deals of the season, which should come as no surprise. GM Jordan "Everyone Must Go" Furlong is like a mechanic giving his car an engine overhaul while speeding along the highway. He's made nine trades this year, and has just five hitters (no pitchers!) remaining from his opening day roster. It's not like I'm standing pat, with seven trades and 57 total roster moves (hey, I punted middle infield and catcher) to rank second only to Jonny German in the latter category.

In his final week as a member of the Walrus, Jason Giambi hit .077 and "slugged" .154 -- perhaps he was depressed by being dumped. Fortunately, hot weekends by Carlos Delgado and Orlando Cabrera carried me, as my rebuilt pitching staff is still spinning its wheels -- Curt Schilling, David Wells and Jason Schmidt, all acquired in recent trades, combined for two starts and zero wins. Facing just two teams with winning records the rest of the way, I'm still confident of making the playoffs, but I won't go very far into September if my rotation doesn't produce.

The Rules Committee will convene later this week to come up with a proposal for offseason trading, then our recommendation will be put to a league-wide vote. In last week's BBFL thread, there was support for it to be unlimited, and no objections to that idea, so if you have any more input on the topic, please speak up now. Since there's a deadline for declaring keepers one week before the draft, the trading window should close one week sooner, allowing for peer review of any last-minute deals.

Was the week between K-Town and I the closest week ever or what? I won RBI by 1, we tied in SB and AVG, I won OBP by .001, he won SLG by .002, I won W by 1 and he won WHIP by 0.03. Only a Jason Varitek HR for me on Sunday night turned a tie week into a 7-4 victory.

Oh, and Jeremy Giambi stole a base. His first career steal. What a whacky game this is.

MVP for the Week: Josh Beckett, whose blisters settled down long enough to allow him to go 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA for the week.

The "You Suck, Go Home" Award: Frank Catalanotto, for his a little less than beautiful 2 for 17 week. Why did I trade for him again?

After pulling the trigger on 3 deals involving 20 players over the last 10 days, I finally feel good about my roster. Until someone gets hurt anyway.

While a terrible 9-2 loss, after couple of weeks with losses or ties, should assure a state of panic in the AGF clubhouse, especially since four strong players are on the DL, two of them for the rest of the season (Griffey and Patterson). However, the head-to-head numbers do not reveal it, but Reykavik won pretty narrowly in several categories, only in the ERA dept. did he win handily (and I had a respectable ~3 ERA). So all hats of to the Candy and I will now go forward with an outfield of Oakland part-timers (Piatt, Byrnes, and McMillon) after having dumped Long earlier, and having several trade proposals for Dye rejected.

In terms of trading I would probably favor a trading window, prior to the draft.

Sunday was apparently Vacation Day for the Buiders. My "hitters" went 8-for-41 with two doubles, two walks, and two runs scored. That, combined with another dire effort from Greg Maddux, turned a 6-6 tie with the Thunderbirds into a 9-3 loss. I can't believe I didn't fall farther.

However, the head-to-head numbers do not reveal it, but Reykavik won pretty narrowly in several categories

My win this week was a total fluke. My pitching was unbelievable where it's usually awful. I've gutted the team this year so I don't expect to be anywhere near the Top 6 when it's all said and done. A 10-2 loss for me this week wouldn't be unexpected.

Well, the trading deadline has come and gone. To those of you who submitted deadline deals to the group, please accept my apologies for not getting back to you before the deadline - I'm at a conference, and haven't had any kind of internet access for a few days, and couldn't make any kind of serious trade decision in 15 minutes.

I'm pretty happy with my supply of keepers for next year. Bonds, Thome, Bernie Williams and Palmeiro head off what should be a strong heart of the line-up, assuming Palmeiro's offence hasn't just jumped off a cliff. I'm still confident that he's only been in a long slump as he was hitting with consistant excellent up till about a month ago. Mark Mulder will be the first cog in the pitching machine.

I managed to trade away pretty much all of my near-keeper talent to net Thome and Williams, with only Contreras and Ainsworth left as guys that might be of interest to someone over the break, provided they come back from their injuries and play well, which is a BIG IF at this point.

I'll chalk this year up to learning - I have high hopes to run a better draft next time. My last place showing was a mixture of dissappointing seasons from several players I expected more from (Olerud, Miller, Lopez, even LoDuca), lack of playing time (Kielty, Giambi) and just general suckyness (Dempster - he managed to kill my pitching stats several weeks just on his own - and would manage to tantalize on occassion with a rare strong start). Oh, and my inadvertant punting of both saves and steals.

Here's looking to next year for me!

Best, Grumpy Geoff

A 10-2 loss for me this week wouldn't be unexpected.

It would be positively welcome Mike :-)

After the way Mebion Glyndwr have performed the last couple of weeks - this contest could have all the quality and excitement of a Tigers - Devil Rays tilt.

I mean seriously, I drafted both Daryle Ward AND Roger Cedeno... I should have been laughed right out of the league

My drafting of Mo Vaughan and Jermaine Dye should at least get me some consideration for the 'Should drink less Keith's on draft night' award

I'm disappointed at missing out on the draft this year. I started following the antics of the ZLC just after the draft was completed. Is there any talk of expansion franchises for next year? That or the possibility that an existing owner wishes to get out of the baseball business. I think I can hoodwink some stupid local politicians to fork over stadium money. If I can't get into this league I just may be forced to buy the Expos.
_snellville jone - Monday, July 28 2003 @ 04:07 PM EDT (#13816) #
My top ranked offense squares off against Jick's Rays top ranked pitching this week. I shall pray that the old adage is not true. Pat Gillick would be proud of me as I made it through the deadline without making one trade; here's to hoping my team thrives on the chemistry that's gotten them this far.

If someone had told me in April that Jeff Conine and Javy Lopez would be my Co-MVP's for July, I would have told them I must be in first place by sixteen-and-a-half games. ;)
_R Billie - Monday, July 28 2003 @ 05:40 PM EDT (#13817) #
Hmm...my team has been somewhat surprising. I have to count myself fairly lucky this year as I rank 6th in roto but 4th in head to head.

Mike Piazza's season has been a write off so far (3rd round!). Junior Spivey has done nothing (5th round!). Joel Piniero has been good but not great (traded Durazo and Cameron for him and Stewart). Sheffield and Jones have lead the offence with Atlanta's unexpected explosion. Carlos Lee has been crap for the most part. Mike Lowell was a big windfall in the 9th round.

Picks 10 through 12 were writeoffs, though Jimenez has at least given me saves. Brett Myers turned out to be a 15th round steal. I picked Marcus Giles in the 16th round and unfortunately traded him for Fossum fairly early in the season. Adam Eaton gave decent value in the 17th round (unfortunately his team sucks). Zach Day started off fine and was injured. Scott Hatteberg started great and is now blah. The remainder of my picks were either traded or more likely released.

The moral of the story is, no matter how well you prepare you need a heck of a lot of luck.
_Jordan - Monday, July 28 2003 @ 06:27 PM EDT (#13818) #
3rd round: Roberto Alomar
5th round: Jose Hernandez
7th round: Al Leiter
11th round: Mike Remlinger
15th round: John Patterson
16th round: Luis Vizcaino

Really, the miracle is that I'm still in the league at all. I've had worse drafts -- in my very first rotisserie auction, I got Terry Steinbach's last season for $5, or about $10 more than his eventual value -- but this was a stinker nonetheless. Some trades worked out well, but it was the waiver wire, where I picked up Morgan Ensberg, Claudio Vargas, Kevin Mench, Justin Morneau, Aaron Guiel, Jesse Foppert and others that really saved my bacon. I also picked up Scott Podsednik, but in my worst bonehead move (barely edging out the acquisition of Tanyon Sturtze), I dropped him the next day to pick up, I don't know, Steve Sparks or someone. Urgh.

Whatever happens this season, I'm happy with a five-keeper lineup of Ensberg, Beltran, Hidalgo, Prior and Myers -- though I'm giving serious thought to keeping Juan Pierre as well. If you're interested in reserving the 50-steals Floridian before next season, drop me a line during the trading window.
_AGF - Tuesday, July 29 2003 @ 12:07 PM EDT (#13820) #
I voted against the five keeper proposal since I only had Ichiro and Randy Johnson of clear cut keeper quality. However, with five keepers it suddenly seems like I have too many on the borderline: Griffey, Moyer, Rivera, Patterson, Nevin, Carlos Zambrano, Hillenbrand, and maybe even Marcus Giles after his Brian imitation in Montreal.

So whenever we get to trade I might have some surplus, although I think everybody will feel this way since you tend to overrate your own players...

Well I guess going on vacation didn't help my team. Are there any prizes for coming in first in accumulative stats?? It doesn't matter who I play they have a hot week! I want my MOMMY. LOL
