This is a list of the top 40 MLB pitchers calculated by DIPS runs below replacement. I use the "Quick DIPS" ERA (the only one I can calculate using Doug Steele's stats which don't include IBB) but it's good enough. These are NOT park-adjusted, and are based on July 23 numbers. I'm going to try to post park-adjusted numbers later, in this thread. Replacement level is a 5.50 DIPS ERA, about equivalent to 5.8 runs allowed per game.

If you gave me that top 25 list (down to Nomo) and told me that these were the 25 best pitchers in baseball, I'd have to agree with about 18 of them.

Good grief, how friggin' good has Brendan Donnelly been this year? Gagne has been absurd, too, but other than the whiffs, Donnelly has been nearly as good.

Um, Gitz, I don't mean to criticize but if you look at my list, you'll see that in fact it's "Brenda" Donnelly.

Ms. Donnelly is indeed having a terrific season, though.

I can't believe I missed that one.

IF the right decisions were made ( keeping Lo, starting Kelvin from day one ) we would have 3 starters among the 40 very best or close. Ergo we would be in the thick of things...

Right. Everyone who know that Loaiza would be among the best pitchers in the league this year, speak up.

Thought so.

The staff that teach him his cutter knew already he had good location and just needed an extra pitch to get him a better repertoire to choose from and get by, it is clear now that such repport on his betterment never reached decision makers ears.

You're missing the point. The Jays were not allowed to sign Loaiza as a free agent, as per the arbitration rules of baseball.

He was here last year, he could be asked to extend, but the shot went with Sturtze.

He was here last year, he could be asked to extend, but the shot went with Sturtze.

Explain how.

For him to extend the Jays would have to offer him arbitration and Loaiza would have been insane not to take it.

Remember: Not a *single* team signed Loaiza to a major league deal. Nobody wanted the guy. 30 teams had a chance to sign him to a deal and 30 teams passed. The White Sox eventually signed him to a minor league contract because they thought he'd be useful as a AAA starter or big league long reliever/mop-up-man. NOBODY saw this coming and to suggest otherwise and to suggest that the Jays could have signed him when the rules of baseball clearly state they can't is nothing but revisionist history.

there is arb. just after you do no agree with a contract, in this case there was not even an offer. How the Angels could sign Fullmer to a new contract well below the previous one? They showed interest and talked to the player. BJs did not have interest in Lo.

Jabonoso is right about this, but there is a minimum pay cut that can be offered, which is I think 20% (can someone help me out on this) in making such an offer. Loaiza was making $6.05 million, meaning that he would have to be offered a contract of at least $4.8 million per season.

There is NO WAY he was worth that kind of money.

Otherwise, once Loaiza became a free agent I'm not suer how the new deal works. Under the old deal, you couldn't re-sign a guy until May 1. But has that changed? Jabonoso is right about Brad Fullmer. I thought the rule was that you had to sign him by early January or something.

BJs did not have interest in Lo.

Exactly. No one did. To be blunt, he sucked before this year. You seem to think that as soon as he learned the cutter, he was all of a sudden amazing and the Jays should have recognized that. But his September 2002 ERA was 7.34. He only struck out 12 guys in 30 innings. You don't sign a guy like that, especially when he has a poor attitude (which is what was being reported about Loaiza).

The White Sox got lucky.
