On the Official Site today, Spencer Fordin's column about the Jays players and coaches making their All-Star selections quotes J.P. on the releases of Rob Ryan and Mike Moriarty:

"It just got to a point where we had some other kids we wanted to play. The other kids are in the situation of passing them," he said. "We gave those guys Spring Training. We gave those guys 10 weeks. We just thought it just wasn't going to happen here for them. This will enable them to get on with their careers."

Carlos Tosca isn't keen on the changes to the Midsummer Classic; managing to win was never a consideration before. "Are you going to take Barry Bonds out of that game? Are you going to take Albert Pujols out?" The skipper also explains that Roy Halladay will start the last game before the break and may not be available to Mike Scioscia.

Are you going to take Barry Bonds out of that game? Are you going to take Albert Pujols out?

That's a good point.

At first I didn't think this was Seligula's worst idea, but the more I think about it the more it seems like a bad idea. Having to take a representative from each team, no matter how mediocre, will make it harder for managers to play to win. And obviously it's going to increase the chance that somebody gets hurt in the process.

Why even play if you're afraid of getting hurt. If a player doesn't want to play because he's afraid he'll get hurt, he can refuse to show up.

If I'm, say, Dusty Baker in this situation, and Matt Morris is on my pitching staff -- and the ace of my division rival's rotation -- and he's pitching well after entering the game in the third inning, wouldn't I be tempted to leave him in the game until, oh, say, the ninth? And long enough for Tony LaRussa to be counting pitches in his sleep?

118 ... 119 ... 122 ...

I think the managers should manage to win, but playing time should be monitored (paticularily pitch counts). If Bonds wants out in the third, take him out. I think the manager should be able to take a player out but he shouldn't be able to force the guy to stay in. As with pitchers, the pitcher's regular season manager could give the all-star manager a strict pitch count to follow with them so Baker, in this case, doesn't overuse a guy. What if Torborg ever managed the team ;-). I don't know if I like the homefield advantage idea, I just think they should play to win regardless.
