It's unlikely, on short rest, that Roy Halladay will be allowed to finish what he starts, so the Jays bullpen will get involved at some point, and sooner or later, Acevedo's audition will begin. Livan, also returning a day early, will have his hands full with the Jays hitters.

Vernon Wells is getting his first day off of the season. Reed Johnson plays CF, Howie Clark is in RF batting second and Cat's in the three-hole. Bordick is at third, batting eighth, and Doc will no doubt be trying to match Lurch in the home run derby.

So much for the lineup "scoop" -- Wells took BP and is going to start after all. They had the change on the Yahoo box score, but according to Jerry Howarth, Tosca changed it back at the last minute.

On the radio pregame, J.P. raved about the Ravens and told Tom Cheek we might see Dustin McGowan in Toronto "as early as next year" if he keeps throwing strikes.

Wells looks just fine, as he smacks another HR (#19) and it's 2-0, Jays.

Anyone have any ideas what happens to a 3.30 hitter that causes him to slump in mamoth proportions. In the last 14 days Cat is hitting just 2.04 and in the past week, 0.91.
If its his back well then Tosca would be resting him like he was during the first 25 games.
I guess its just a game of percentages eh.

make that .330, .204 and .091. Chalk it up to brain-cramp.

I'll go with Halladay for 7 innings and Tam for 2. I'm confident that Tam can do the job, but I'd be really confident if we brought back Wallach, Ozzie, Frank White and Keith Hernandez in their primes to play the infield.

It's been a thing of beauty for Doc; great play by Woody to retire the 14th straight Expo since Cabrera's first-inning double, their only hit. Halladay has thrown just 55 pitches (only six in the fifth) and it's 4-1 Jays through five. A Bordick solo HR and bunched singles by the top third of the order produced the Toronto runs.

Roy has a 75-pitch 2-hitter through seven, and I hope Carlos leaves him in at least until his next turn in the batting order. He still looks strong; hitting Calloway with a pitch was erased when Myers threw him out on a really dumb steal attempt.

Tosca said on the radio that Davis will start tomorrow, which allows everyone else to pitch this week on normal rest. They're set up for Halladay to open the Red Sox series and close the Yankees series right before the break.

Woo-hoo! Doc hits for himself and is going to close his own game. What a masterpiece.

Is it just me or are the 15000 expos fans a lot louder than 35000 jays fans at the dome? Even losing 4-1 in the 9th inning, they're still into the game

I don not agree with this decision. Halladay should stay in the game. Politte has been awful.
_Lefty - Sunday, June 22 2003 @ 03:22 PM EDT (#99441) #
Whats up with Tosca taking Doc out and bringing in Pollitte with an earned run shutout on the line.
To say nothing about last nite situation. Better not be Deja vu
Coach - Sunday, June 22 2003 @ 03:22 PM EDT (#99442) #
Noooo!

A Woodward error opens the door for the Expos, and Politte comes in? To face the same guy who beat him last night?
Coach - Sunday, June 22 2003 @ 03:30 PM EDT (#99443) #
Politte gets the very shaky save (Wilkerson just missed tying it up) and Doc has won 11 consecutive starts. They dodged the bullet, and it's a satisfying win in a NL park, but I still don't like the manager's decision to take Roy out.
_Lefty - Sunday, June 22 2003 @ 03:30 PM EDT (#99444) #
Whew!!
I don't want to see that again.

My man Brett Myers has shut out the Red Sox on three hits.

Your second place Toronto Blue Jays will be rooting for the Mets against Boomer tonight; many thanks to whoever got the Sunday night games on Sportsnet. The Giants could knock off the A's tonight to make the wild card race a tossup. Mmm, scoreboard watching...

I would like to echo Coach and say THANK YOU to whoever got the programmers at Sportsnet to pull their thumb out and schedule Sunday Night Baseball.

Just finished watching the game on tape...Jays were lucky to win as Politte is still a mess. Great effort by Roy , but Tosca really does do a poor job in handling his pen. Politte needs to get some inning's in a less crucial situation, maybe its his mechanics, as all his pitches are up in the zone.

Is it just me or are the 15000 expos fans a lot louder than 35000 jays fans at the dome?
On the pre-game show they mentioned the bulk of the crowd today were 'children' so it was expected to be a larger and louder than usual fan base. Cudos to the Expos because Toronto couldn't find 7500-10000 kids to fill the Dome if they tried (and they have).

Easily.

I was at an Expos game a few years ago. It was Randy Johnson vs. Javy Vazquez. I think there may have been 6,500 people in the Big O tops. Anyhow it was probably one of the loudest MLB games I've ever been to. I've been to Exhibition Stadium games where there were 30,000 fans and Skydome games where there were 40,000 fans and I had never heard anything like that.

The loudest ever was the home opener a few years ago when Tim Raines returned as an Expo. That was absolutely unbelievable.

The Jays will be a good draw again once they're a playoff team and everybody jumps of the Leafs bandwagon. However, they'll never be able to *keep* those fans until the Jays find a way to get the crowd back into the game. I've been in louder libraries than the Skydome.

Mike

Roy gets some credit on the cover of ESPN.com and the Mets are up 1-0 on the Yankees, bottom of 3 (Cliff Floyd homered - his 14th)...I feel grimey cheering for the Metropolitans, and it has nothing to do with the Alomar thing.

I was at the Saturday and Sunday games at the Owe. My first (and probably last :() games at Montreal.

I'm not sure why everyone is down on La Stade as a baseball venue. Sure, it doesn't have the retro charm of a lot of stadiums, but the fans that do show up are there for baseball, and that makes up for the lack of generic mallpark atmosphere. I found the concessions were pretty well priced, and you can get a great seat for $8. $16 seemed to be the priciest game day seat.

Once you're in your seat and the game is on, I found the atmosphere to be the best of any non-contender game night I've been to. The only ones that topped it were late 80's Tigers and early 90's Jays. That crowd beat out '91 Yankee Stadium, '92 New Comiskey, '01 Jacob's Field, and even '98 Yankee Stadium for crowd enthusiasm. They are really into the game, and are knowledgable about it.

The reason they can sound so loud is, literally, all the empty seats. When seats are put down to sit on, they bang really loudly. So everyone grabs the empty seat next to them, or in front of them, and starts hammering away. Really something to hear that small crowd generate so much noise. It even made Saturday night's game a lot of fun, in spite of the Jays loss.

I hope the Expos stay in Montreal for at least one more season. I'd love to go down there again, and I'd say that if you're within a two hour drive of the Stadium (Like, say, Ottawa), it's worth the trip.
