An 11-1 rout of the slumping Nation Builders propelled Snellville Jones' Gashouse Gorillas to a 5 1/2 game lead after six weeks in the Batter's Box Fantasy League. Springfield Isotopes and my Toronto Walrus are tied for second, a half-game ahead of Baird Brain. All of us are rooting for Spicol's Red Mosquitos, back over .500 after a 7-3 win, to bite the Gorillas this week.

The Moscow Rats climbed from 18th to 11th place with a 12-0 whitewash of Garces_not_on_roids, who tumbled from 14th to 19th with the crushing defeat. The 11-1 loss for Nation Builders dropped them from 7th last week all the way to 15th. We've talked a lot about the volatility of Head-to-Head compared to Roto, and it's never been more evident. Here's the standings:

 # Team Name W-L-T Win % GB
1 gashouse gorillas 48-22-2 .681 --

7 AGF 36-32-4 .528 11
8 Reykjavik Fish Candy 37-33-2 .528 11
9 Red Mosquitos 34-33-5 .507 12.5
10 Eastern Shore Birds 36-35-1 .507 12.5

12 Sub-Urban Shockers 33-34-5 .493 13.5
13 Mebion Glyndwr 34-37-1 .479 14.5
14 K-Town Mashers 33-39-0 .458 16
15 Nation Builders 32-38-2 .458 16
16 Chatsworth Halos 29-40-3 .424 18.5
17 Jicks Rays 28-40-4 .417 19
18 Geoffs Grumpy Group 28-41-3 .410 19.5
19 Garces_not_on_roids 26-44-2 .375 22
20 Thunderbirds 23-46-3 .340 24.5
The old bull Walrus dodged another bullet on Sunday, as Mike M.'s Reykjavik Fish Candy had an off day. Mike still won the matchup 6-5, but I had been trailing 9-3 most of the week and closed to 8-4 on Saturday, so the final score was a relief. While my first-rounder is playing like the "wrong" Giambi, I'm just hoping to keep my head above water. If anyone needs a C upgrade, I'd trade Dan Wilson (292/338/403) for a fifth starter or decent middle reliever.

I swear I'd be in 2nd or 3rd if Sundays didn't count. I don't know what's wrong with my team.

Considering I was playing a near first-place team, I'll take the win. Now I have Jeter back I think my team can make some noise.

Roto Standings - End of Week 6

Yes that's right, Mebion, getting no respect sitting 13th in the H2H standings, is now top dog in the Roto sense.

The boys trailed in the score all week and tied it at 6 going into the last day. Only to come up flat and fall back in multiple categories for a 7-3 loss. Too many disappointing performances to list and a 10 k/0 bb shutout from Schilling was wasted.

The injuries haven't been terrible what with Schilling making a satisfactory recovery from appendix borrowing surgery, and Fox wasn't doing much anyway, but losing Eaton's quality starts to the infamous strained groin hurts a lot.

It seems like there have been an unusually high number of injuries in the past week.

Hijack:

According to a few sources, including Ravens.com, Jason Arnold has been promoted to Syracuse, replacing the DL'd Chulk. Congrats, Jason! We hope to see you up here as early as September perhaps.
(nteresting that no Toronto reporter has pcked up on it yet!)
_Gwyn - Monday, May 12 2003 @ 12:28 PM EDT (#13425) #
Yay, The 'Sons of Glyndwr' officially suck less than I had expected, thanks Jonny!

Is there a list of BB poster names mapped to team names anywhere ? I have the hardest times with the yahoo nicknames trying to figure who owns what teams.

I have a large Mo Vaughan sized hole at first base that looks like it needs filling. Any want one of my starters for a first baseman who will not fall apart ?

Arnold's promotion is not a temporary move either:

Arnold, 24, is replacing injured starter Vinnie Chulk (elbow) in the SkyChiefs' rotation, but Syracuse manager Omar Malave said Arnold's promotion is not a temporary move.

"He's here to stay," Malave said.
_R Billie - Monday, May 12 2003 @ 01:18 PM EDT (#13428) #
By the way, Arnold will be starting tonight in the second game of a double header. Assuming it's not rained out.
_steve - Monday, May 12 2003 @ 01:30 PM EDT (#13429) #
And Arnold's AAA debut can be heard online, convenient on a Jays off-day, eh?
_King Rat - Monday, May 12 2003 @ 03:29 PM EDT (#13430) #
For Gwyn's benefit, I run the Rats. There's not really all that much I want to say about the game last week, it was the team's best showing thus far and it showed in the result. MVH: Carl Everett, who continues on a tear with 9 R, 9 RBI, a SB and a line of 350/500/700. The LVH, such as it was, was probably Dave Berg at a run, a ribbie and 143/250/143. Miguel Batista is this week's best Rat hurler, going fifteen innings, winning two and doing it with an ERA of 0.60, a WHIP of 0.87 and a K/BB ratio of 11 to 1. Derek Lowe continues to struggle, with an ERA over 11 and a WHIP of 2.61. However, after last week, I'm not complaining.

Jonny's list is correct, and the other owners contacted me by e-mail. If they post here, I don't know their handles, but Jicks = Rick, Eastern = Greg, and Chatsworth = Brad, which shouldn't violate their anonymity. I even know Snellville's real name, but I'm sworn to secrecy.
_R Billie - Monday, May 12 2003 @ 07:02 PM EDT (#13433) #
You mean Snellville isn't his real name?
_snellville jone - Monday, May 12 2003 @ 08:42 PM EDT (#13434) #
Well, I don't really intend to be secretive, I guess I just got used to handles and whatnot over at Primer. People that see me on the street call me "Jarad" or sometimes "J-rod", depending on how saucy their mood is. Feel free to do likewise, but I'll probably keep posting under my hip-hop alias for continuity's sake.

My "rampage" this past week was due largely to timing. Besides the injuries to his pitching staff, the cancellation of the St. Louis/Chicago game prevented big offensive days from several of the Nation Builders' slumping hitters.

You know things are going your way when you take the "win" category even though your pitchers combined for only one win, which was vultured by a Texas middle reliever.
_LMK - Tuesday, May 13 2003 @ 01:58 PM EDT (#13435) #
I am giving up on Mientkiewisc, Tony Clark, and David Bell (about time you might say) and the other waiver tryouts. If anyone is looking for decent starting pitching (Appier, Bonderman, or Graves), all I need is a corner infielder who hits more than singles....
