Day two of the Cliff Politte closer era, and day one of our two-day reprieve -- we hope -- from maddening bullpen switches. It's Lackey vs. Lidle tonight; I like the Jays' chances for an easy win for a change.

Three run bomb by Delgado, Jays up 3-0.
Question 1: How many players in the AL are playing better than Delgado this year right now? There can't be to many.
Question 2: Is it just me, or has this place become dead during games? Has everyone already jumped ship? It's amazing how after one month we can go from people saying this is a 90 win team to nobody showing up.
Question 3: Why do I get carded **every** time I go to the liquor store. I'm twenty-freakin-six! Plus I have some grey hairs. From now on Hannah goes.

Mike Woolner is dissing Esteban Loaiza bigtime: after Tom Cheek mentioned that Loaiza has been named the AL pitcher of the month, Woolner commented that it will take him a while to get back to his usual level.
Tom Cheek then pointed out that Loaiza will be a free agent after this season.
I've never heard the Jays broadcasters sound off on an ex-Jay like that before.

This game has been an unadulterated pleasure until just now; that fan running onto the field was a strange counterpoint.
Mike, you look 19 to me. If you don't like the bloom of youth, grow a beard.
Carlos Tosca leaves town, and the Jays throw a complete game. Coincidence?
Wahoo, etc. etc.
Wahoo, etc. etc.
What a breath of fresh air,how much sharper the defense is when the pitching is sharp(and good)
The Jays also finally got lucky on some hard hit balls put in play. Fullmer's lining into a doubleplay was a turning point.
Wilner's also not afraid to say exactly what he thinks. He's not politically correct about not stepping on toes. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing but it's quite different from Tom and Jerry. Although lately Tom has been subtly grumbling about this and that during the broadcast.

Terrific game by Lidle! I stopped following it after the second inning. Had to pretend I have a social life. :)
Particularly impressive: 5Ks, 1BB. Those kind of ratios will win you a lot of games.

I don't comment during the games because:
a) either I'm at the game or
b) It's awkward for me to sit at my computer and watch the game at the same time.
Regardless of their record so far, this team is fun to watch.

Fair enough. Being stuck in Rochester means that I can't do either. And if you've ever been to Rochester, you'll know that "stuck" is the right word.
Having a full time job and 2 part time jobs (PhD student, economics writer, community college prof) means that I'm on the computer 80 hours a week anyway. Tho you guys already figured that out by now. :)

It's a special kind of fun, because with the pitching and the hitting the way it is, the team can still win or lose any game regardless of what the score is in the 7th. Last weekend against KC showed that. They're a fun team to watch, but boy are they frustrating at times.

Doug Davis, 6IP, 1 run given up... a solo shot by Eckstein, Jays up 2-1 in the 7th.

I had the pleasure of attending this game and I have much to report.
The first pitch was thrown out by Miss Universe (Canada) and the Amazing Kreskin.
They're now playing the 'Law and Order' theme music when introducing the umpires. When did that start? I prefer it to that 'de-ump de-ump' thing they used to do.
I was on the Jumbotron in the mid-first inning.
The anthem was signed, instead of sung, by the students of the public school my wife went to when she was young. Unless there are two schools of the same name.
After the top of the first, a guy sitting in front of me said, "Did the Jays trade one of their pitchers to the Angels?"
A good time was had by all.

I was also in attendance, and here are my observations:
Doug Davis did exactly what you would hope for him to do: compensated for his lack of dominating stuff by pitching smart. He got a couple timely DPs, and saved his only strikeout for when he needed it most, his last batter. That was Shawn Wooten, who did a good job of making Davis work for it.
John Gibbons had the good sense not to push his luck and send Davis out for the seventh. The curious thing was that he brought in Doug Creek, with 4 consecutive righties due up. Wasn't Escobar supposed to be the first man in following Davis? I have three theories on why he wasn't:
a) He's been traded
b) He's been arrested
c) Gibbons didn't trust him with a two run lead
That doesn't explain why Creek instead of Lopez or Tam, nor why not Escobar for the 8th & 9th with a six run lead. At any rate, it was much preferable to the head-scratching bullpen maneuvers Tosca would have come up with.
Frank Catalanotto is great, I hope they keep him beyond this year. Even when he doesn't get on base, he has smart at-bats and instills confidence.
I was not on the JumboTron. Besides Matthew there were some clips of Ace torturing, mutilating, and pulverizing the Rally Monkey, and for my money they were in very bad taste. Agree / Disagree?
It was a great day for the K-Town Mashers of the BBFL, as Baird Brain pitcher Ben Weber was lit up for 5 earned on 6 hits in 1/3 of an inning, highlighted by a slam from Masher Vernon Wells.
A good time was indeed had by all. The game had a very good flow, no prolonged lulls.

Faulds mentioned that Escobar was being held back for one more day to give his arm time to recover from back-to-back hammerings from the Texas Rangers. This would explain why he wasn't in the game ìn the 9th. Sturtze might get lit up tomorrow, and in that eventuality, we'll see him in on Sunday (I'll be in attendance).
I also thought it curious that Mr. Creek came in. I was expecting Tam to come in because Lopez has warmed up for and pitching in a lot of games recently.
Nevertheless, I was happy to see Creek succeed against righthanders, as I have recently signed him to a minumum $1 contract with my DMB team (Pottsville - Three Run Homerun League).
Davis is the type of pitcher that can do reasonably well in the AL. He's going to get pasted once in awhile because he'll give up his share of walks, but against a relatively free-swinging club like Anaheim, his approach should be successful more times than not.

It seems that Tam was designated for assignment, which would explain his non-appearance in today's game.
Another oversight on my part - Mark Hendrickson gets the start tomorrow. It'll be the first game I see him pitch in person.
