I admit my Toronto Walrus squad was lucky to be holding an 8-4 lead over Billie's Bashers going into the final day of Week 4 action. My vaunted pitching staff lost Armas to the DL, and a few other guys were simply terrible (Baez had an 81.00 ERA). My hitters weren't much better, so I was going to be content with a split, but ended up on the short end of a 6-4 score.

That was enough to relinquish top spot in the standings. Snelville's Gashouse Gorillas (the only team to breathe that first-place air more than once) have a one game lead, and I'm tied with Jurgen's Baird Brain for second. Against the Jones boys this week, my team had better wake up or we'll get crushed.

Week 4 Standings:
 1 gashouse gorillas 32-15-1 .677 --
2 Baird Brain 30-15-3 .656 1

Jonny sends his apologies; the weekly Roto stats will be unavailable for a couple of days because he's away on business. As you may have already noticed, we completed a trade of Orioles (Gibbons for Julio) before he left. That's an aspect of this league I'm enjoying -- lots of offers, and 12 deals so far, some of them controversial.

The crack comparing me to Kenny Williams is looking fairer by the week; the Rats have been losing in every way imaginable. This week was especially bad, as we lost the 'battle of the vermin' to the Mosquitos by the lopsided score of 9-3. However, in time-honoured incompetent GM fashion, I remain confident that we can score our first victory off of Glyndwr. All we need to happen is a hitherto unprecedented lack of meltdown pitching performances-I'm confident that the release of Jason Simontacchi and Vladimir Nunez will aid immeasurably here-and some consistent hitting. And now on to the week 4 awards:

MVH(Most Valuable Hitter:) Richie Sexson (7 R, 8 RBI, 407/429/889.) A rare bright spot in the Rats order, Sexson's three homer performance against Atlanta on Friday was one of the few box score lines I enjoyed reading.

LVH(Least Valuable Hitter:) In a very crowded field, Nomar Garciaparra's poor performance (2 R, 1 SB, 115/148/115) stands out. Just awful, especially from one of the team's theoretical stars.

MVP(Most Valuable Pitcher:) Jake Peavy's 6.1 IP, 2 ER, 9 K win against Cincinatti beats a thin, thin field for MVP honours.

LVP(Least Valuable Pitcher:) Derek Lowe. Any time you rack up a 31.5 ERA for a week, you know you sucked. As did the rest of the Rats. Groan.

I've been winning abuot 80% of the batting categories each week. I just wish I had some pitching that wasn't on the DL. That's the last time I hire Dallas Green as my pitching coach.

Mr Rat - everybody else has, and I am sure my chaps would not be as impolite as to start playing well just in time for the match with you.

On a single day where I saw 4 of my hitters go a combined 4-for-30, thanks to a double-header and a 20 inning contest, I was relieved to see that I had squeeked out a win with batting average (My .269 beat out Geoff's .265). Once again, Soriano anchored my offence by scoring and driving in 9 runs on route to a .424/.500/.758 week. And while Runelvys "The King" Hernandez gave me another solid performance to to end up with a win in ERA, it was my relief corp that really took me to Graceland, pitching 15 innings while allowing only one earned run to go along with some impressive K/BB numbers.

It's playoff atmosphere in the Gashouse as a tough Walrus squad comes to town, looking to reclaim the BBFL throne. With Millar coming off a 4-for-27 skid as well as Floyd and LaRue's nagging injuries, the Gorillas have their work cut out for them as they brace for a clash with a Titan.
_R Billie - Monday, April 28 2003 @ 10:47 AM EDT (#13368) #
Stewart's 3 hit Sunday was a factor in eeking out the win in batting average. The teams were tied exactly in runs and RBI...what the odds of that? Despite Schilling not pitching, I didn't have a single bad start (though a couple of relievers stunk) and ironically benched two pitchers who ended up making great starts. It didn't matter in the end as I would have just slightly fallen short in innings anyway. But I have to give the young pitchers props, they saved my bacon this week as the offence only managed to tie or narrowly lose in most hitting categories.
_AGF - Monday, April 28 2003 @ 06:39 PM EDT (#13369) #
After two ties and 1 one-point win AGF finally broke through and got a little above the .500 mark with an 8-4 mark, although it was over the apparently hapless Glyndwr chaps. However, The AGF manager is in at least as much trouble as Howe, Manuel, and Torborg, after he started Shawn Estes again. In the previous week Estes had produced a 20+ ERA, but he was inexplicably given another chance in Colorado of all places, and rewarded AGF with a 30+ ERA, and 6.50 WHIP. AGF's management subsequently let go of Estes to make sure the manager would never start him again. On the other side Corey Patterson once again was the MVP with a .421/.476/1.053 line in addition to 7 runs and 8 RBIs. And AGF welcomes Randy Johnson to the team with his first positive contribution of the year.

Roto Standings - End of Week 4 - Corrected

You'd think that after screwing up the weekly summary, I'd get the overall standings correct. But you'd be assuming I got a decent amount of sleep the past two nights. My apologies if anyone got their hopes up or down based on the previous numbers. Coach, please delete my initial Roto Standings post.

Following the corrected Roto reports below is a list of total runs scored for each team. This is meant as an audit in case I've made you all wary of the validity of my numbers.

No problem, Jonny. I wanted to delete all my stats from last week. If Tony Armas doesn't come back soon, and healthy, my formerly #1 ranked pitching staff will soon be in the middle of the pack.
