There's my answer to "where's Woody?" -- in today's Sun, Mike Ganter's notes explain the absence of the team's starting SS -- Chris strained his left shoulder diving for a ball late in Monday's game. It does not sound too serious.

We also learn that Phelps reminded his manager he still has shin pads, and that Reed Johnson's debut will probably come Sunday against Casey Fossum, a pitcher he's familiar with. I thought we'd see Johnson in RF last night, but after Berg's sixth inning double, Tosca (wisely) kept his bat in the lineup, and despite the inherent defensive risks, Dave got another hit in the eighth and now has a .919 OPS. Why didn't Johnson and his glove come in for the ninth? Well, if the Yanks had tied it up -- a distinct possibility against El Flako -- Berg would have been the second hitter in the tenth.

I prefer the nickname Escoboob to El Flako, but either way he is just an awful pitcher and I'll be estatic when he finally gets traded this year.

Escobar is living proof that it takes more than raw ability to be successful at the major league level. El Flako clearly has major league stuff, but just doesn't have the confidence or whatever to use it effectively. Worse still, he thinks of himself as a Premium Closer, and entitled to the associated rights and privileges (and salary) of one of the game's elite pitchers.

He's often been compared to Juan Guzman, but that's proving to be unfair to Guzman, who (a) was intelligent and hard-working, (b) played a key role on two World Series champions, and (c) won an ERA title. El Flako hasn't done any of these things, and isn't likely to.

El Flako is rapidly descending into Jose Nunez territory, for those of you who remember him. Nunez was (I think) a Rule V draftee with a great fastball, an outstanding curve, and a bad attitude; he struck out a whole bunch of Kansas City Royals in one game (I think it was 11), but eventually derailed his career.

Maybe Phelps forgot to take the shin pads off last night....an explanation perhaps for Tom Wilson almost running him over on the base path with what should have been a triple if poor Josh could only run faster.
