Because I suspect all us proud Canadians would like a place to sound off on this -- Mike Weir rocks! That was a gripping, thrilling final round, and after seeing his performance, I think Weir must have ice in his veins. That par putt on the 18th to salvage a playoff was just amazing, and his composure was exemplary. Congratulations to a Canadian champion!

And oh yeah, the Jays were stomped on today, getting swept at home for the second time in this young season. Remember, folks -- coming out of the Terrible Twenty with a .500 record would be just peachy. They now have to go 5-3 on the road against the Yankees and Red Sox to do that. Mind you, the road has been pretty good to them so far. And this team has been awfully streaky this young season....

The Lou Marsh trophy voters (for Canada's Athlete of the Year) have their hands full. Just yesterday, our men's curlers won the world championship, and Paul Tracy is having an unprecedented season in the driver's seat. Brilliant figure skaters, Hayley Wickenheiser, and the great Larry Walker will have to take a back seat this year.

Weir's accomplishment is truly amazing, and was a great thrill to watch for all Canadians (and all lefties; that course is biased). He deserves even more credit for reinventing himself, with the help of a psychologist and a personal trainer, after a 2002 season when many bandwagon jumpers wrote him off. Our first countryman to win a major, with three Tour wins already this year -- Mike's in a class by himself among Canadian sportsmen. Well done!

I was amused at my wife's reaction to Jim Nantz's commentary when Weir finally won - "The Green Jacket is going north of the border"

"What border?" she said, "He lives in Utah"

Maybe he meant the Mexican border.
