I hate to link to material on Baseball Primer, mostly because I write for Primer and don't want to abuse the opportunity Kent has given me through cheap self-promotion; but also because I imagine most readers already check the site out semi-regularly.

I'm making an exception this time, because this is the Best Thing Ever.

How entertaining can a Kansas City Royals preview be? You'll see.

Hilarious. Brilliant. Whitey Herzog would be scratching his head saying "I don't get it," and come to think of it, so are Pena, Baird, and Glass.

I think the Royals are the least-deserving AL team, because Detroit has begun to make an effort, but K.C. has more talent. They are both worse than Baltimore, and maybe even Tampa Bay. Also on Primer, in the same "Looking Forward to 2003" series, Craig B and David Peng dare to compare the lowly D-Rays to the Blue Jays of the early 1980s.

I'm not linking to this because Craig's my friend; that's a coincidence. It's an amazing piece -- detailed, imaginative, makes an afterthought team much more interesting. Superb work. Not quite the Best Thing Ever (it should have been in Dr. Seuss verse) but one of the finest preseason profiles I've read.

Not quite the Best Thing Ever (it should have been in Dr. Seuss verse) ...

Oy, what a perfect opening for a little braggadocio of my own. It dates back a couple of years, but I abused my overwhelming power as an ESPN.com fantasy correspondent to write a mid-season review called Texas Rangers 2001: The Seussical.

It's one of my favorite pieces by my favorite author -- me. :-)

Each Ranger fan in Arlington
Liked pitching a lot
But management in Hicks-ville
... did NOT!

Any Helling or Rogers could handle THAT chore
Add an Oliver's twist ("if you please sir, no more!")
