David Wells on Toronto sportswriters:

"No beat writers in any town I've ever played in are as ignorant, muckraking, or relentlessly negative as the guys in Toronto. In a region where baseball is just slightly less popular than hockey, football, basketball, curling, tobogganing, ice fishing and snowshoe racing, the local sports-hosers have absolutely no idea what they're talking about."

Boomer on Canadian baseball fans:

"Baseball fans in Canada simply do not understand what they're watching. Honest to God, there were nights where I just wanted to climb up in the seats at the SkyDome and start slapping."

Trouble is, there's just enough truth in both of those hyperbolic statements to make the Canadian reader a little uncomfortable. We're getting better at understanding and appreciating baseball here -- as prospects like Adam Loewen and Jeff Francis are making clear -- but still, 90% of the conversations I have with my countrymen and women about baseball rarely rise above "grown men in their pajamas getting paid millions to hit a ball with a stick." I can almost feel your pain, Boomer -- though I'm actually giving up all-night benders for Lent.

Gotta give credit to Richard Griffin for this line, too: "[Wells's] book might be the first unauthorized autobiography in publishing history."

Griffin needs to pay more attention to the more notable wacky quotes attributed to star-power athletes ... I mean, according to Wells' line of thinking y'all in Toronto at least have some idea what this thing "basketball" is, so presumably Griffin has at least heard of Charles Barkley -- who, in response to some of the claims he made in his own autobiography a few years ago, once said (several times): "I was misquoted."

I particularly agree with Wells when it comes to the writers (and I know I'm preaching to the choir here). Toronto writers, by and large, hate baseball and the Jays. When they talk about contraction it's like fundamentalist Christians talking about the Rapture - it sounds terrible, but you can tell that they're really looking forward to it because everybody'll finally get what they deserve.

Boomer appears to be following Dennis Rodman's career path. I hope he will be able to cope with retirement. Will he be able to deal with no longer being a celebrity?

Wells will always be a celebrity if he stays in NY. I have a feeling Steinbrenner will leave the Yankees to Boomer when he dies--the son he always wanted.

Honest to God, are people still paying attention to anything Wells says? I'd be more comfortable dismissing anything he does as a tissue of self-serving nonsense, part lies and part half-truths, than addressing any of it seriously. David Wells would never tell anyone what he thinks of them until their back is safely turned.

Just because I enjoy twisting the knife, I heartily recommend his 911 call. Gotta love The Smoking Gun.

Gideon, if you're going to give up anything for Lent, I would recommend you do as I do and give up moderation.

David Wells' "autobiography" does contain some positive Canadiana:

Wells made his pro debut with the Jays' defunct rookie-ball club in Medicine Hat, Alta., and his book pays particular praise to the "Yukon femininity" of the "open, willing, ually aggressive Canuck groupies" he allegedly encountered there.

Sorry, I couldn't condense the link.

Well, if anyone had any doubt that someone other than Wells is responsible for the text of the book, using the phrase "Yukon feminity" pretty much eliminates it.

It amazes me how much hype a loser like Wells can generate. Contrast his views with a reputable baseball authority, Rob Neyer.

(From his column June 5, 2002, an interview with author Malcolm Gladwell)

Neyer: ...It's been my experience that a disproportionate number of Ontario baseball fans, especially those who came of age in the late 1970s and early '80s, are more analytical than the typical baseball fan. My theory is that since those fans (like you) didn't have a tradition to fall back on, you were more likely to really think about what you were seeing, rather than just accept the common wisdom....

Gladwell: I think you are right. If you grow up with a team that has Joey McLaughlin as its closer, and Garth Iorg at third, you quickly develop alternate appreciations for the game.

Incidentally, chances are if you're a fan of this site and the good folks that author it you'll enjoy Gladwell's work too. Here is his archive of New Yorker columns. If you don't read anything that doesn't at least mention baseball, try this one. Or, for a somewhat eerie forecast of the recent space shuttle disaster, try this one, written 7 years ago.

Question.

Why hasn't anybody signed Ricky Henderson yet? He'll play for the minimum, still puts up a solid OBP, can still swipe a base, and his defense is still more than passable. Surely, there are a bunch of teams that could use him to help fortify their bench or to use in a platoon situation. Even if it doesnt work out, its very low risk.
