Richard Griffin gets off a great line with which I completely agree -- "The owners have recorded a TKO to run their record as organized labour pugilists to 1-13-1" -- and takes only a few backhanded swipes at J.P., applying the "genius" tag with little enthusiasm and a hint of sarcasm. The usual resentment and envy seeps in there, no doubt unintentionally. It suits R.G.'s purposes to feel sorry for Jose Cruz, but mostly he's upset that he didn't get a scoop in advance of the move.

There's some useful stuff in this column, too, like a summary of the Jays' payroll savings under Ricciardi. But when it's time to list the incoming and outgoing Jays in the J.P. era, Griffin resorts to the same underhanded sleight-of-truth he's used before -- arbitrarily drawing the transaction line at Opening Day 2002 instead of four months earlier, when the GM took over. Why? So Hinske doesn't "count" as an acquisition; that would ruin the effect of the propaganda. Only about 90% of fans won't notice the omission, but he can't fool us in the Batter's Box with that garbage.

Extra! Extra!

Star's Griffin out-of-patience with reality.

"If this is going to be the new world of major-league baseball under conditions of the new Basic Agreement, then we want no part of it."

Assuming that's a journalist's "we", may we take it as a promise?

I just don't get it. For years, everyone complains about mediocrities getting big money, etc. etc. And now, that the market has crashed, and many GMs are being a little more responsible, there's all this gnashing of teeth? The journalists "want no part of it."?

I love how he paints Cruz as loyal (which I suppose, he was) while for a year now, he and the rest of his buddies have been clamoring to deal Delgado, who is now the longest serving Jay, and has been even more loyal. I guess loyalty is only a worthy attribute in players you like.

Billy, I'm afraid Griffin washing his hands of baseball is just wishful thinking. But a fella can hope. If you want unbiased opinions about the Jays, don't read the Star. For intelligent coverage, steer clear of the Sun. The Globe presents impartial AP reports, and their writers, Blair and Millson, are the best of the local scribes, but as the "national" paper, they don't give Jays fans enough baseball.

Maybe that's why so many of you are here -- the old Batter's Box hit counter clicked more than 1,700 times this week, shattering (almost doubling) the previous record. Thanks, and best wishes to all for a happy, safe holiday season.

Not only that, but Griffin omits the acquisition of such minor-league signings as Doug Linton and Howie Clark and all those guys. If he's going to count the losses of guys like Lesher and Mowday, he has to count these guys too. More importantly, he doesn't mention the draft, which is probably the most important thing of all for the organization's future.

Matthew's right, of course. Luke Prokopec should be on both lists (in and out) and the very astute selection of Corey Thurman via Rule 5 also gets no credit in Griffin's universe. Never let the facts get in the way of a clumsy attack on someone's accomplishments.

Hey, what's up with Blue Jay Way? Did you guys move, or are you having server problems? I've got the dreaded 404 error for a while now. If you have an essay you'd like to publish somewhere, you're welcome to pinch-hit here temporarily.

"a radio reporter asked general manager J.P. Ricciardi: "Any surprises in store when the non-tendered guys are announced on Friday?" Ricciardi stared over the reporter's shoulder for a second and then said, "No, I don't think so.""

Apparently, Cruz shouldn't have been a surprise. JP is giving people too much credit in the press....lol.
_R Billie - Sunday, December 22 2002 @ 12:59 PM EST (#100678) #
Well what was JP supposed to say at that point?

"Yes, we're going to non-tender Cruz. Shocked?"

Why does a "mook" like Griffin think he's entitled to know such things beforehand? Why would JP undermine any last remaining possibilities of trading or signing Cruz by confirming he might be non-tendered?

Griffin's an idiot...sometimes I think he deserves credit for some intelligence since he may be trying to deliberately be deceitful or trolling for a response. But I'm beginning to doubt that...he's just taking advantage of the "baseball fans" to call into the radio station excited that the Jays picked up a "future Hall of Famer" in Bordick.

I put the link to the new location of the Blue Jay Way front page in the Homepage field of this post. I think the host is in the middle of changing servers or something, because all the links are messed up; the only one that works at the moment is the message board. So all my columns seem to be currently incommunicado, which annoys me a bit as I had a new one up for a while.

I do have more columns waiting to see the light of day, but I'll just hang on to them until Blue Jay Way either back up for real or down for the count. But thanks.

Spoke too soon. You can go to all the other pages of the website if you look at the difference between the new address and the old address and figure out what the new address of the page you're looking for ought to be. For example, my newest column is at:

http://www.film.ca/penaltybox/bluejayway/features/me/medec12.html

I assume that Darryl's got plans to attend to these technical details.
