Starting Pitchers Quality and Jays History

Obviously a big concern in MLB (especially with guys like Cole going down) is how many starters do you need if you are to contend in 2025? 5? 6? 16? Hard to say. Also how badly does the quality drop after the first 5? Let's do some digging.

Ideally you have 5 getting 32 each with 2 spot starts by someone (or two get 33 starts).

Wow, the Jays have done well there. 2-4 guys with 30+ starts each year (would've been 3-4 but for 1 missed start by Matz in '21), 1 or 2 more in the 20's each year but '23. Whoever is keeping these guys healthy is doing a damn fine job. Doubt many other clubs have that many getting 30+ a year for the past 4 years. 46 guys had 30+ starts in '24, 40 in '23, 40 in '22, and 33 in '21. So basically an average of 1 to 1 1/2 per team - the Jays beat that every year and doubled it the past 3 years.

Lets look at Jays history - at first I was just going with 21-24 but... well... I couldn't resist digging back to 1977 just for fun. For these charts I'm using IP as a starter to determine ranking as it'd be a very, very hard job to figure out who the top 5 on opening day were, factor in guys who were hurt opening day but should've been there, etc.  Big 3 = 3 starters with most IP, Top 5 is the rotation basically, 6-16 covers all the rest of the guys used (max starters in Jays history was 16), 9+ is for the 9th and beyond pitchers (ie: bottom of the barrel stage, often getting just 1 or 2 starts each). Bold year = playoffs anything else in bold = best result in Jays history for this group. Italics indicates last place finish (year) or worst result in Jays history for this group (anything else).

Boy were a lot of guys used and abused in 2019.  114 IP from #9 and beyond starters.  Wow.

Too much to view? Here is a quick summary... Playoffs (excluding freakshow 2020) so 9 seasons total (85-89-91-92-93-15-16-22-23)... Honestly, I was quite surprised to see 9th starters happened in 6 of 9 non COVID Jays playoff seasons. Peak of 10 starts from them in '15. Forgot how weak the big 3 were in '93 - that team was all offense obviously (annoyed at the time over Gillick not keeping Key over a 4th year that Key felt he deserved and got from the Yankees of all teams).
