Four wins and one loss on Friday. Buffalo were the only losers. Even with four wins there were few big performances as the affiliates used a few key hits and some good pitching.
Buffalo 1 Iowa 3
New Hampshire 1 Reading 0
Hillsboro 1 Vancouver 2
Dunedin 4 St Lucie 0
FCL Blue Jays 5 FCL Yankees 1
This is what I noted from yesterday's games.
Thomas Hatch started, went six innings, and had one bad inning. Iowa's fourth inning went single, bunt single, home run. With Buffalo just scoring one run, that was the game. Hatch allowed six hits, no walks and six k's. A good five innings and a one bad inning.
Cullen Large doubled and scored on a Logan Warmoth single for Buffalo's only run. Otto Lopez had three hits, five other hitters had one each.
Paxton Schultz has been pitching well recently and Friday was no exception, 6.2 shutout innings. Andrew Bash finished up.
The only NH run came in the sixth, Ryan Gold singled followed by a Cam Eden double. Six hits for NH by six different hitters. Addison Barger was 1-2 with two walks and no K's.
Vancouver had just three hits and won. They scored their two runs in the first inning without a hit. Two walks, two hit batters and an error made it a 2-0 game.
Trenton Wallace made his high A debut and pitched better than his line. He was charged with five walks but when you look at gameday a lot of strikes were called balls. Gameday showed one pitch in the middle of the strike zone box that was called a ball. Wallace was charged with one run on four hits. He doesn't throw particularly hard but he is a low arm slot lefty with a decent fastball and a sweeping slider and change. A bit Mayza like perhaps. Obviously the Jays will keep him as a starter but he will have to prove he belongs there at AA and AAA.
Connor Cooke started and escaped with 3.1 shutout innings. I say escaped because St. Lucie had six hits and a walk but didn't score.
Three Jays picked up two hits. Estiven Machado tripled and singled. Rainer Nunez and Adriel Sotolongo had a couple of singles each.
It was rehab day in the FCL. Jackson Rees, who pitched in Buffalo last season, worked the first. Lazaro Estrada, in Vancouver last season, threw the second. And Harry Rutkowski, in Dunedin last year, went two innings.
We haven't talked much this season about Robert Robertis, a 19 year old outfielder. He leads the team with a .364 average and controls the strike zone. He might get a look in Dunedin if he keeps this up.
Three Stars
Third Star - Estiven Machado
Second Star - Paxton Schultz
First Star - Otto Lopez
