New Hampshire scored two in the ninth to come from behind and win. Lansing scored two in the tenth to win. The GCL Jays gave up two in the eleventh and lost. Vancouver's bats were en fuego. Buffalo lost as Anthony Kay did little to take the heat off of Ross Atkins. Bluefield won, the GCL Jays lost. Otto Lopez hit well, as did Jesus Lopez.
Buffalo 7 Lehigh Valley 11
New Hampshire 3 Akron 2
Dunedin at Fort Myers - Postponed
Lansing 10 Lake County 8 - 10 innings
Vancouver 13 Boise 5
Kingsport 5 Bluefield 7
GCL Tigers 4 GCL Jays 2 - 11 innings
DSL Blue Jays 1 DSL White Sox 2
Here are some things I noted from Wednesdays games:
Anthony Kay had struggled in AAA before he was traded to the Jays. That continued on Wednesday, Kay gave up 11 hits and 3 walks in 4.2 innings.
The Buffalo roster has really turned over. At the start of the season the talk was how the Bisons were full of prospects. Vlad Jr., Bo, Biggio, Alford, even Gurriel was there for a while. The Bisons lineup on Wednesday had six four A players with only Urena, Tellez and Davis representing prospects.
Two of the senior members of the Bisons, Andy Burns and Jordan Patterson, each had three hits. They also hit a home run each, Patterson has 14, Burns 11.
Two more hits for Forrest Wall but with Anthony Alford returning from injury, Dalton Pompey clearing waivers and Derek Fisher arriving, Wall just dropped a few spots on the depth chart. Jonathan Davis, Anthony Alford, Dalton Pompey all have dropped a spot too.
The Kevin Smith train just slowed, no hits and three K's.
I discussed Justin Dillon last week. It was the good Justin Dillon on Wednesday, seven innings two runs. How will the pitching in the upper minors settle with Sanchez, Stroman, Hudson, Phelps and Biagini gone?
Not only was Otto Lopez 4-5, including a double and a triple, but he didn't make an error. Lopez is 20 and should be in Dunedin as a 21 year old next season.
Gabriel Moreno was 1-2 with 3 walks. Are the pitchers getting wary of young Moreno?
Yorman Rodriguez has been the best hitter on the C's. Philip Clarke was hit well since he arrived. But two other C's have moved their averages up. Trevor Schwecke was named to the all-star roster on Wednesday and celebrated by just getting one hit. Schwecke has hit well over .300 in July, he finished with an average of .330 and looks like a decent athletic player. The aforementioned Clarke went 4-5.
Even more under the radar is Jesus Lopez who came over in the Kendrys Morales trade. Lopez is 22 and too old for Vancouver but he has moved his average up to .297 with three hits on Wednesday.
Eric Rivera was a 14th round pick this season. Rivera has moved up to the lead-off spot in Bluefield. Rivera has hit over .300 in both June and July. He walks more than he K's and plays centre field. He does not have much power but he is off to a good start.
In case you missed it in yesterdays excitement, Anthony Alford was 1-2 in a GCL rehab start.
