Buffalo, NY - Scott Copeland (3-3, 3.45) soaked up eight innings for the Herd but got no help from his offence. The Yankees affiliate scored four runs (three earned) on eight hits and a walk. Copeland had four times as many groundouts than strikeouts with 16 and 4 respectively for a Game Score of 62. Danny Barnes nearly matched Copeland in the K department as he whiffed the side in a perfect ninth.
Matt Dominguez, Jesus Montero and A.J. Jimenez accounted for the three Bison singles. Montero walked to get on base twice. Jio Mier - who replaced Ryan Goins at short in the seventh - and Andy Burns heard ball four once. Dalton Pompey was hit by a pitch but was also picked off first.
Trenton 6 New Hampshire 4
Manchester, NH - The Yankees affiliates made it 2-for-2 over their Blue Jays counterparts. Wilmer Font was one out short of a quality start as he pitched 5-2/3 innings of three-run ball on six hits, including a two-run homer. He struck out eight without a walk. John Anderson (3-6) stranded both of Font's runners to end the sixth but gave up three runs (one earned after a throwing error by McGuire in the eighth) on four hits and three walks with just one strikeout over 2-1/3 innings. Brady Dragmire stranded the bases loaded to end the eighth. He walked one but whiffed two over 1-1/3 innings.
The Fisher Cats took a 2-0 lead when Dwight Smith Jr. swatted a two-run homer to score a Roemon Fields single. Fields got to take another leisurely jog on the bases by putting the ball over the fence to start the fourth. New Hampshire regained the lead in the sixth when Reese McGuire singled home a Smith walk. Fields was joined by Shane Opitz in the two-hit club and both of them stole a base. Smith and McGuire both walked twice to reach base three times. Rowdy Tellez, Derrick Loveless, Emilio Guerrero and Ian Parmley were a collective 0-for-16.
Tampa 0 Dunedin 0 (Suspended - bottom 2nd, 1 out, 0 on)
Dunedin, FL - Justin Shafer surrendered two hits and a walk but still put up a couple of zeros on the linescore, striking out a pair of Yankees. Anthony Alford grounded out, John La Prise struck out and Jonathan Davis flied out in the first. Ryan McBroom flied out to right to start the second before play was halted.
Salem-Keizer 5 Vancouver 4
Zach Jackson contributed two scoreless innings of relief Tuesday.
Vancouver, BC - The Giants affiliate held off a late rally by the C's to win the first two games of this series. Denis Diaz (1-4, 7.56) had a 1-2-3 first inning but gave up a pair of runs in the second and another in the fifth to take the loss. He was dinged for three hits and four walks and only struck out two. The outfield wasn't bored as they had to handle 11 of his 13 outs in play. Zach Jackson walked one and struck out two over two shutout innings. Griffin Glaude got through the eighth but gave up two runs in the ninth on two hits and a walk. He racked up four strikeouts in his first appearance since returning from Lansing.
Andres Sotillo had two hits and a run batted in for Vancouver.
Vancouver got on the board in the second when Nash Knight singled, went to second on a Rodrigo Orozco base hit and scored after tagging up on a fly ball and throwing error in right field. Juan Tejada tied it at 2-2 with an RBI double in the third to score a two-bagger from Bryan Lizardo. The C's pulled to within a run in the ninth on RBI singles by Andres Sotillo and D.J. McKnight to score a Knight walk and an Orozco infield single but Lizardo grounded out to strand runners at first and second to end the game. Orozco and Sotillo had two-hit efforts. Christian Williams had a base hit.
Princeton 4 Bluefield 1 (Game 1)
Princeton, WV - It's too bad this August 16th game had to completed. The Jays led 1-0 when the rain stopped this one but when play resumed, the Rays scored four unanswered runs for the victory. Kyle Weatherly allowed a game-tying home run in the fifth before Stuart Holmes (1-1) surrendered three runs in the sixth, including a two-run homer. Weatherly struck out four and plunked a hitter in his three innings of relief while Holmes struck out three while allowing two hits and a walk in his three innings. Jose Espada had started this one, going two innings and posting a K-BB total of 2-1.
Nick Sinay walked, went to third on a single by Reggie Pruitt and reached the pentagon on a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ground ball double play in the first. Pruitt had the only two hits for Bluefield.
Princeton 5 Bluefield 2 (Game 2 - 7 Innings)
Princeton, WV - Joel Espinal's (2-2, 8.62) pitches must have had some movement on them as he uncorked four wild offerings in his three innings of work. He surrendered three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out only one. Brayden Bouchey struck out five over three shutout innings of one-hit ball.
The Jays scored in the fifth when Bradley Jones doubled and scored on a Levi Scott base hit. Jones then belted his 16th homer of the year in the seventh for the final Bluefield run. Nick Sinay and Jesus Severino drew the only walks. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was 0-for-3.
GCL Tigers 7 GCL Blue Jays 6 (11 Innings)
Lakeland, FL - Despite sporting the second-best record in the Gulf Coast League, there will be no playoff games for The G-Jays in 2016. Their playoff hopes were dashed by the Tigers despite battling back from a 6-2 deficit to push the game to extra innings. Miguel Almonte's two-out error at second with the bases loaded resulted in the Tigers walking it off. Ty Sterner (1-1) struck out a pair but took the loss after loading up the bags with two singles and an intentional walk. Tyler Olander pitched the first two innings and gave up just a hit and a walk while striking out one. Wilfri Aleton was whacked for two homers and six runs overall on three hits, three walks and a hit by pitch over 1-2/3 innings. Daniel Moritz could not strand the two runners he inherited but tossed 2-1/3 innings of three-hit ball with three K's. Yonardo Herdenez gave up a hit an inning over four frames but struck out two to keep the Tigers off the board.
Yorman Rodriguez gave the Jays a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer to plate a David Jacob single in the fourth. A Jacob groundout scored a Bo Bichette double and a Francisco Rodriguez double scored a Yorman Rodriguez base hit to cut the Tiger lead to 6-4 in the sixth. Bichette singled home an Almonte base knock in the seventh and D.J. Daniels knocked home the tying run in the eighth after reaching on an error. Bichette and Yorman Rodriguez had two-hit games while Francisco Rodriguez reached twice with a knock and a walk. Daniels and Chavez Young were both 0-for-5 but Young did draw a walk.
