Two Canadian starting pitchers took the mound on Sunday. Shane Dawson pitched very well before his defense cost him. But he still got the win thanks, in part, to Ian Parmley. Tom Robson has had a rough start to 2016 and on this day he was better, not great but better. He did have a lot of base runners but he kept Lansing in the game and left with the lead. Lansing's game went to extra innings where the Lugnuts prevailed. Drew Hutchison started for the Bisons and he too was pretty good. He wasn't "pitch efficient" but he got the job done and with Junior Lake homering the Bisons won. Dunedin had the worst day, losing easily.
Charlotte 2 Buffalo 5
Drew Hutchison went six innings and was charged with the two runs. Through five innings Hutch had only given up one hit. However he had walked a couple and hit a batter. In the sixth Charlotte got on the board with a two run home run. Hutch was done after six innings, he threw 97 pitches, 61 for strikes. Bo Schultz and Ryan Tepera only gave up one hit over the last three innings.
Buffalo scored in every inning from the second through the fifth. Junior Lake got the party started with a two run home run in the second. Kasey Kotchman doubled and scored on an error in the third. Andy Burns led off the fourth with a double and scored on a sac fly from Lake. In the fifth Dalton Pompey had a bunt single, stole second and scored when Domonic Brown singled. Brown had three hits, Matt Dominguez and AJ Jimenez had two each.
Bowie 3 New Hampshire 7
Shane Dawson had a no hitter through four innings. Two hits off him in the fifth gave Bowie their first run. Dawson cruised through the sixth, got the first out of the seventh then gave up a single. Looking for a double play Dawson got a ground ball to the second baseman, Christian Lopes. Lopes booted it and Dawson was pulled in favour of Matt Dermody. Two singles off Dermody made it three runs charged to Dawson, but only one earned. Dawson's ERA is now 3.62.
New Hampshire loaded the bases in the second inning, Rowdy Tellez and Christian Lopes singled, Wilkin Castillo walked. A wild pitch generated one run then Ian Parmley singled in two. Parmley added a home run in the fourth and that was followed by a two run shot from Roemen Fields. For both of them it was their first homers of the year. Parmley had a day, four hits. Tellez and Lopes had two each.
Dunedin 0 Charlotte 7
Nine hits for the Jays, but Charlotte had 12. Jonathan Davis, Richard Urena and Jorge Saez each had two hits.
Chris Rowley went six innings and had many base runners. Nine hits and one walk led to five runs. Brad Allen gave up the other two. The story of this game was hitting with runners in scoring position, Charlotte were 5-10, the Jays 0-8.
Lansing 5 West Michigan 3 - 11 innings
Tom Robson had a better, but not great start. In five innings he allowed eight hits and three walks but only gave up two runs, one of which was unearned. Robson left with a 3-2 lead but Dan Lietz let the Whitecaps tie it in the sixth. Starlyn Suriel came on for the eighth inning and pitched four perfect innings with four K's.
Trailing 2-0 Lansing tied it in the fourth. Gunnar Heidt walked, Justin Atkinson drove him in with a double and Atkinson scored on a single by Josh Almonte. In the fifth JC Cardenas and Jake Thomas singled. Andrew Guillotte put the Lugnuts ahead with a sac fly. In the tenth inning Heidt and Almonte singled leaving Lansing with two on and two outs. Then the pitcher lost it, three straight walks gave Lansing two runs.
Other Weekend Notes
Jeremy Gabryszwski pitched six shutout innings on Saturday to lower his ERA to 3.32. Justin Shafer was hit around and his ERA is 7.91. Adonys Cardona walked four while registering just one out. Sean Reid-Foley pitched seven innings, four hits, one walk, four K's. It looks like he is starting to pitch to contact more. He had 12 ground outs to two fly balls.
On Friday Anthony Alford suffered a concussion in a collision with Richard Urena. As of Sunday he has not been placed on the DL and presumably is day to day. In that game Francisco Rios went six innings, five hits, no walks, 3 K's and two runs allowed. Ryan McBroom had three hits and is now hitting .260. Ryan Borucki had another not so good start.
