Two morning game losses set the tone for a 1-3 night on the farm but the win was one of the walk-off variety.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 5 Buffalo 2
Buffalo, NY - Roberto Hernandez (0-1, 3.00) was victimized twice by Gary Sanchez in the form of an RBI double in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third. Hernandez went five innings against the Yankees affiliate, yielding three hits and a walk while striking out four. Chad Jenkins put up a zero in the sixth but gave up two runs in 1-2/3 innings, including a bases-loaded walk to former Jay Jonathan Diaz. Pat McCoy prevented Jenkins' line from more damage by getting out of that bases loaded jam on his way to 1-1/3 scoreless innings. David Aardsma worked a perfect ninth.
The Bisons got their runs in the third and ninth on RBI singles by Alexi Casilla and Casey Kotchman. The only two-hit game belonged to Domonic Brown. The other hits were collected by Jesus Montero, Junior Lake and David Adams, who also walked. Andy Burns had a free pass and Jon Berti stole a base.
New Hampshire 4 Reading 3 (10 Innings)
Manchester, NH - The Fisher Cats walked this one off thanks to Dwight Smith Jr. as his single scored Ian Parmley, who got aboard on a double. Matt Dean drove in the first two runs with a single in the third inning and a double in the fifth before coming home on a K.C. Hobson groundout. Dean and Parmley had two hits apiece with Dean drawing one walk and Parmley drawing two. Melky Mesa and Christian Lopes both singled and walked. Wilkin Castillo singled and stole a base and Roemon Fields had a base hit.
Casey Lawrence served up a home run to Phillies prospect J.P. Crawford and allowed an unearned marker but still put together a quality start of two runs over six frames, giving up just five hits and striking out two. Daniel Schlereth was charged with a blown save after surrendering a run over two-thirds of an inning. John Stilson stranded two Schlereth runners and pitched 1-1/3 shutout innings. Murphy Smith (2-0) struck out four over two innings of one-hit ball to get the victory.
Brevard County 7 Dunedin 2
Viera, FL - This one got away from Dunedin in the late going. Scoreless after three, the Brewers affiliate scored twice off Kyle Westwood (0-3, 7.89) in the fourth before laying the wood to him with four more runs in the seventh. The long ball was Westwood's undoing as the Manatees teed off for three home runs among the 10 hits he allowed in six-plus innings. His groundout/flyout total was 10-4 but his K/BB ratio was only 1-0. Jose Fernandez finished up the seventh without further damage. Bo Schultz worked the eighth, surrendering an unearned run but striking out two.
Dunedin did not get things going until the eighth when Dickie Joe Thon doubled, stole third and scored on a Derrick Loveless base hit. Mike Reeves drove in the second run with an RBI single to cash in a Jason Leblebijian base knock in the ninth. Reeves also stole a base. Richard Urena had a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish to push his batting average up to .310. L.B. Dantzler had the other hit for the D-Jays. Anthony Alford donned the golden sombrero for the second time in as many games, going 0-for-5. J.D. Davis had a hat trick in four plate appearances and Ryan McBroom whiffed twice in his four turns at bat.
Cedar Rapids 3 Lansing 0
Lansing, MI - Both teams traded zeros for the first six innings but the Twins affiliate hit a couple of long balls off Josh DeGraaf (2-1) to emerge victorious. Conor Fisk contained the Kernels to two hits and a walk while whiffing five over five shutout innings for a Game Score of 67. DeGraaf gave up three runs over 3-1/3 innings but struck out two. Dan Lietz gave up a hit and an inherited run to finish up the ninth.
Andrew Guillotte and Lane Thomas had 2-for-4 days at the top of the order. Ryan Hissey, Carl Wise and Aaron Attaway had the other hits, none of them of the extra-base variety. The Lugnut hitters drew no walks or wayward baseballs on their person but they whiffed eight times.
