The Vancouver Canadians had another tough night at The Nat against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes as they lost for the seventh straight time on a soggy Saturday night.
Andrew Guillotte was hit by a pitch in the first inning but did not advance any further as he watches an inning-ending ground out.
Ryan Borucki makes his first appearance at Nat Bailey Stadium since Game 1 of the North Division final against Spokane. He pitched two-plus innings and allowed a run on four hits but struck out three.
Turner Lee walked a hitter and yielded a sacrifice fly that opened the scoring in the third inning but he induced a double play ball to end the frame.
Lane Thomas pulls into second base after a two-out double in the third inning for Vancouver's first hit of the night but he would be stranded.
Jonathan Harris makes his way to the mound to start the fourth inning and was greeted by a leadoff triple, one of two in the inning as three runs would cross the plate to make it 4-0 Salem-Keizer.
Ryan Metzler catches a pop up at second base for the first out of the fourth inning.
Sean Hurley has some fresh grass stains as he comes up to bat in the home half of the fourth. The green addition to the laundry was the result of a diving catch in the third inning.
Earl Burl III watches a pitch bounce in the dirt in the fourth inning.
That wayward pitch brought in a single by Carl Wise (#6) as he receives congratulations for scoring the Canadians' first run of the night.
Brandon Hinkle strands a runner for Harris in the sixth and is congratulated by Lane Thomas for an inning-ending strikeout. Hinkle pitched 2-1/3 innings of shutout, three-hit relief with two strikeouts. Andrew Case pitched a one-hit ninth but the C's, despite having the tying runs on base, were unable to pull this one out as they lost 4-2.
Ryan Borucki started off well with a couple of punchouts, the last at 85 miles per hour, and a foul pop up to catcher Kevin Garcia in the first inning. He got another whiff at 84 MPH and stranded two singles, one a blooper in the second. However, he gave up two more singles to start the third before leaving the game. His pitches ranged from 80-94 MPH. Turner Lee was in the 78-91 MPH range in relief of Borucki.
Jonathan Harris was hit hard as he yielded two triples (one nearly caught by Andrew Guillotte in center field but it glanced off his glove), one hit, three walks and a wild pitch that led to three runs in 2-2/3 innings. He did strike out three as he threw from 77-95 MPH. One interesting quirk, there was one pitch that flashed '00' on the radar gun by Harris but there were no oohs or aahs from the crowd. The gun was not working until midway through the top of the first inning.
Brandon Hinkle used his assortment of off-speed pitches from 73-75 MPH to strand runners at second and third base in the eighth inning to keep the game within reach and lower his earned run average to 0.68. Andrew Case brought his ERA down to 0.87 by stranding a double in a shutout ninth.
Offensively, Lane Thomas brought in the second run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to cash in a Ryan Metzler double. Metzler had a chance to be the hero but flied out to shallow center with two runners on to end the game. Sean Hurley walked in the ninth but was forced out on a Gunnar Heidt ground ball. Though pinch-hitter Connor Panas struck out, Heidt stole second and Kevin Garcia reached base on a catcher's interference call to put the tying run. Metzler's fly ball nearly caused a collision but the center field hung out for the final out.
The C's had just three hits and three walks with the free passes going to Justin Atkinson, Sean Hurley and Kevin Garcia. The C's were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position with seven men left on base.
