One affiliate was able to clinch a playoff spot, one had an off day, and 4 were able to win.
BUFFALO 5 @ Syracuse 3
This game went to extra innings after Felix Doubront turned in a solid 8 strikeout outing in 7 innings. Doubront was saddled with 3 earned runs, but he only allowed 4 hits and 2 walks. The major league bullpen reinforcements Colt Hynes, Todd Redmond, and Chad Jenkins each allowed just one hit in their shutout innings.
Sean Ochinko made the most of his 5 plate appearances. He was 3-4 with a sac fly to lead the offense. Caleb Gindl hit a home run. Nearly everyone in the Bisons lineup came away with a single hit in 4 or 5 at bats. Devon Travis was 0-4 with a walk and 3 strikeouts.
Binghampton 4 @ NEW HAMPSHIRE 5
This must have been a hard luck loss for the Mets. They had 16 hits and walked twice but could only score four runs. The Fisher Cats only had 7 hits (and no walks), but managed to score 5. Dalton Pompey (1-4) was apparently hurt after a loud collision with the wall, but didn’t leave the game. Dwight Smith Jr. (1-4), playing centre field instead of his usual left, had a double.
DUNEDIN 5 (off)
Great Lakes 2 @ LANSING 8
There were 6776 in attendance to watch the Lugnuts clinch a playoff spot on Saturday night. The Lugnuts treated the home crowd when Richard Urena (0-4, BB) started 6-3-6 triple play in the third inning. That cleaned up Shane Dawson’s line in a start where he allowed 2 runs on the 8 hits and 2 walks in his 6 innings of work. Dawson had 6 strikeouts, 6 groundouts, and 6 flyouts.
Offensively, the Lugnuts were again led by Rowdy Tellez (3-5, 2B) who had 2 RBIs to add onto his league leading total. Anthony Alford (3-5, 2R, SB) had a double to go along with his 3 hits. Now that the Lugnuts have clinched a playoff spot, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some promotions for some of their prospects. Anyone want to predict who will be packing for Florida?
At press time, trailed in the bottom of the 8th.
