The affiliates went 2-0 Monday with solid starting pitching and 21 runs worth of offence. Buffalo's game in Pawtucket was rained out and the ground was too wet in Daytona for Dunedin to play ball. The Bisons and D-Jays will play two today.
New Hampshire 10 Trenton 0
Trenton, NJ — This was actually a 0-0 game for the first seven innings before the Fisher Cats scored a converted touchdown in the eighth and added a field goal in the ninth to obliterate the Yankees affiliate. I love the last four words of that sentence! Dwight Smith Jr. singled home the first run before Jake Fox and Kevin Nolan sandwiched a Ryan Schimpf double with run-scoring hits of their own. Matt Newman put the capper on the rally with a three-run home run. Nolan doubled home two more runs in the ninth and Newman put the cherry on the sundae by singling home the 10th run. Jon Berti, K.C. Hobson and Jorge Flores joined Fox, Nolan and Newman in the two-hit club. A.J. Jimenez singled to give all nine starter at least one base knock. Nolan also added a stolen base.
Matt Boyd pitched five scoreless, no-hit innings by striking out six while walking three to give him a Game Score of 70. Luis Perez worked around a walk and a balk in the sixth but the no-hit bid was broken up by an Eric Jagielo single in the seventh inning. Perez struck out a pair in 1-2/3 innings before turning the ball over to Dustin Antolin (1-0), who got the final out of the seventh and finished things off by allowing just a single while striking out four over 2-1/3 innings.
Lansing 11 Dayton 3
Lansing, MI — A Rowdy Tellez two-run home run and a three-RBI effort from Ryan McBroom were the highlights of a 15-hit attack by the Lugnuts to slay the Reds affiliate. Danny Jansen had an RBI double while Josh Almonte, Dickie Joe Thon and D.J. Davis had RBI singles. Gunnar Heidt and Tim Locastro both lofted sacrifice flies with Locastro getting hit by a pitch not once, not twice but three times! Thon also took one for the team. Heidt was the only Lugnut not to pick up a hit. McBroom led the hit parade with three while Tellez, Justin Atkinson and Chris Carlson had two apiece. Carlson drew two walks for a perfect day at the dish. Thon and Locastro each stole a base.
Chase DeJong (1-0) reached the minimum five innings for the victory. He was dinged for two runs (one earned on a dropped foul ball by Jansen behind the plate) on three hits and three walks. The younger brother of ex-Jay Jordan DeJong gave up a gopher ball and plunked a batter but struck out four and induced seven groundball outs for a Game Score of 56. Mark Biggs brought three scoreless frames of two-hit ball out of the bullpen and struck out three. Chase Wellbrock gave up an unearned run (error by Thon at short, one of two on the day) and a hit in the ninth. The Lugnuts made three errors but the Dragons committed four.
