The affiliates won just three of eight games Tuesday night. The lowlights were two double-digit losses. The highlights were a shutout win and two victories of the one-run variety.
Rochester 7 Buffalo 2
Buffalo, NY - Sean Nolin (4-5) was knocked around for six runs over four innings against the Twins affiliate on five hits and four walks. One of the hits was a Chris Colabello home run. Nolin had four strikeouts and five groundouts. Chad Jenkins was lit up for a Wilkin Ramirez solo dinger but struck out one in the fifth. Rob Rasmussen struck out two in a shutout sixth and Mike Zagurski survived a hit and a walk in a scoreless seventh. Colt Hynes also had a hit and a walk on his pitching line but added a strikeout to keep the Red Wings off the board in the eighth. Bobby Korecky had a K in a clean ninth.
Buffalo got the board in the fourth with Brett Wallace's 13th homer of the season. Wallace drove in the other run in the sixth with a single as part of a three-hit evening. Darin Mastroianni, Cole Gillespie, Dan Johnson, Andy LaRoche and Ryan Goins added one to the hit total. Mike Nickeas drew the only walk. Anthony Gose wore the golden sombrero in his four at-bats.
New Hampshire 2 Trenton 1
Trenton, NJ - The Fisher Cats only had two hits but one of them was a Dalton Pompey two-run homer to score a Kevin Nolan walk in the third inning to turn a one-run deficit into a one-run lead. Jon Berti had the other hit while Jorge Flores had the other base on balls.
Michael Lee (2-1) pitched seven strong innings of one-run ball, surrendering just three hits and two walks while whiffing five. Of his 15 outs in play, eight were on the ground. Dustin Antolin struck out two in a scoreless eighth and Gregory Infante survived a pair of hits in the ninth and struck out a batter to post his 20th save.
Lakeland 12 Dunedin 1
Dunedin, FL - Taylor Cole (8-7) was raked for five runs (four earned due to an Emilio Guerrero error at short) over five frames on six hits and two walks. One of those hits was a home run but he did strike out nine and added three more outs on the ground. Efrain Nieves worked a perfect frame with one strikeout. Griffin Murphy struck out three but gave up a solo homer among two hits over two innings. Hunter Carnevale was hunted down for six runs in just one-third of an inning but just two of the runs were earned after errors by Guerrero and Christian Lopes. Carnevale was carved up for three hits and a walk and struck out nobody. Chad Girodo could only strand one of two Carnevale runners after allowing a hit but struck out the last two hitters he faced.
An RBI fielder's choice by Dwight Smith Jr. in the third prevented the Jays from a whitewash at the hands of the Tigers affiliate. L.B. Dantzler was 2-for-4 while Smith Jr., Lopes and Marcus Knecht all had base hits and walks. Peter Mooney doubled, Shane Opitz singled and Nick Baligod walked. Guerrero and Pierce Rankin both wore the 0-for-4 collar.
Lansing 6 West Michigan 5
Comstock Park, MI - A four-run second inning gave the Lugnuts a lead they would never relinquish. Dawel Lugo singled home a D.J. Davis triple before coming home on a Justin Atkinson double. Chaz Frank singled home third run before a Derrick Loveless fielder's choice brought in the fourth. Davis grounded into a double play that led to another run in the fifth before Chris Schaeffer singled home the final run in the sixth. Atkinson and Frank had three hits apiece, including a double. Jason Leblebijian had a double and a single. David Harris had a base on balls, a hit by pitch and a stolen base. Matt Dean had a hit in four trips to the plate.
Brad Allen (5-5) gave up a run in each of the first three innings but he rebounded to put up zeros over the next three against the Tigers affiliate. That makes it a quality start with one of the three runs unearned after a Harris error at second base in the first. Allen scattered eight hits, struck out three and walked nobody. His 16 outs in play were divided evenly between the ground and the air. Roberto Espinosa served up a two-run homer among two hits and a walk over two innings but he struck out a pair. Brady Dragmire struck out a batter in a scoreless ninth for save number three.
Vancouver 2 Boise 0
Jairo Labourt had nine strikeouts over six shutout innings in Monday's victory over Boise.
Vancouver, BC - Jairo Labourt (4-3) put up six shutout innings against the Cubs affiliate, navigating his way around seven hits and a walk. He uncorked two wild pitches but he rung up nine 9 K's and four of his seven outs in play remained in the diamond. Justin Shafer struck out three of the first four hitters he faced before allowing a single in his 1.2 innings. Michael Kraft needed just three pitches to strike out the lone batter he faced to strand Shafer's runner. Phil Kish walked a pair but struck out a pair to notch his third save.
Franklin Barreto singled home the first run and scored the second in the sixth inning.
Franklin Barreto and Chris Carlson had back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth inning for the only runs of the game. Barreto and Boomer Collins had two-hit performances with Collins getting a double and Barreto stealing his 21st base of the year. Tim Locastro also doubled while Alexis Maldonado singled and swiped a base. Gunnar Heidt and Michael De La Cruz heard ball four once.
Burlington 3 Bluefield 2
Burlington, NC - The Royals rode three runs off Jesus Tinoco (1-8) in the second inning to pick up the victory. Tinoco pitched six innings and was tagged for three runs (two earned after errors by Josh Almonte at center and Richard Urena at short on the same play) on six hits, two walks and a hit by pitch. He struck out three and eight of his 12 outs in play were on the ground. Oscar Cabrera allowed one hit, plunked a batter and picked up a strikeout in 1.1 scoreless innings. Chase Wellbrock finished up with two-thirds of a scoreless inning, stranding two Cabrera runners with two K's.
Bluefield's two runs came in the fifth and sixth innings on RBI singles by Jesus Gonzalez and Rolando Segovia, who had a 4-for-4 night. Segovia led off the ninth with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch but he got no further. Almonte had the other base hit. Aaron Attaway walked and stole a base. Lane Thomas was 0-for-3 with a walk.
GCL Tigers 12 GCL Blue Jays 2
Lakeland, FL - The Tigers demolished a 2-2 tie with 10 unanswered runs for the victory. Bobby Wheatley (1-5) was whacked for seven runs on six hits and five walks in 3.1 innings. He hit one batter and struck out two. Joe Claver could not strand two Wheatley runners and and coughed up two of his own over 1.2 innings on three hits. Daniel Rodriguez was rocked for four runs over three innings on four hits and a walk. Both Claver and Rodriguez struck out two batters.
Both Blue Jay runs came in the second inning with Dean Bell driving in one with a single while the other run was the result of an error. Bell had a walk while Dave Pepe drew two free passes. Deiferson Barreto had the other base hit. Juan Tejada walked and stole a base. Yeltsin Gudino also walked while Andres De Aza was hit by a pitch.
DSL Blue Jays 6 DSL Braves 4
San Pedro de Macoris, DR - The Jays scored the first five runs in this one. Ronniel Demorizi got things started by launching one over the fence for a solo shot in the second inning. They tacked on four more in the fourth thanks to an error, a wild pitch and a two-run double by Javier Hernandez. An Enmanuel Moreta ground ball produced the other run in the ninth. Demorizi and Hernandez led the hit parade with two apiece and Hernandez was hit by a pitch. Frankie Rodriguez doubled, walked and was plunked. Edward Olivares singled and took one for the team.
Jose Nova pitched 4.2 innings with three runs allowed on eight hits, a walk and a hit by pitch. One run was unearned due to his own throwing error. Nova struck out five and three of his four outs in play were of the ground ball variety. Denis Diaz (4-4) pitched the final 4.1 frames and gave up a run on five hits. His K-BB and GO-FO totals were 6-0 and 4-2 respectively.
