The Batter's Box Minor League Player & Pitcher of the Month honours for June go to Franklin Barreto and Daniel Norris.
Franklin Barreto received two first-place selections and one third-place vote in June for 11 points - sneaking by the trio of Adron Chambers, K.C. Hobson and Matt Newman by a single point. Daniel Norris earned three first-place votes and one second-place selection to give him 18 points - five ahead of fellow lefty Matt Boyd.
Barreto batted .333/.421/.439 for the Vancouver Canadians in June with 12 runs batted in. The 18 year-old right-handed hitting shortstop collected seven doubles and was successful on five of seven stolen base attempts. The 5-foot-9 Venezuelan started the year with a four-hit game June 13, the first of two in June, and he had two-hit efforts in five more contests. Barreto needs to continue working on his defence at short as he has made nine errors so far in 2014.
Norris has won back-to-back Batter's Box Pitcher of the Month awards by following up a 1-0, 1.68 earned run average with Dunedin in May with a combined 3-0, 3.06 in six starts split evenly between Dunedin and New Hampshire. The 21 year-old lefty posted a 41-10 K-BB ratio in 32.1 innings. Highlights included five shutout innings against Daytona in his final start for the D-Jays. His last two starts of June in New Hampshire saw him limit the opposition to two runs in 11.2 innings with a 16-0 K/BB ratio, 10 of those were against Portland June 24.
Norris has also taken over the overall points for the Pitcher of the Year award with 40, seven ahead of Matt Boyd. Deck McGuire has 23 points, Kendall Graveman is fourth with 19 points and Liam Hendrix and Jeremy Gabryszwski are tied for fifth with 18 apiece. We have a first-place tie among the hitters as Dan Johnson and Mississauga native Dalton Pompey both have 24 points, one ahead of Brad Glenn and two ahead of Kevin Pillar. Dwight Smith Jr. was shutout in June so he remains at 21 points. D.J. Davis is lurking around with 19 points.
