The affiliates only got one win out of four Monday night but a local boy continues to shine in 2014. New Hampshire had the day off.
Syracuse 4 Buffalo 2
Buffalo, NY - Kyle Drabek (4-5) must have his neck iced down after this one. He got whacked for three home runs by the Nationals affiliate, resulting in four runs over six frames. He allowed six hits and two walks but struck out five with a ground ball total of seven. Lefty Raul Valdes struck out three over two scoreless frames, working around a hit and a walk while fellow southpaw Ryan Rowland-Smith worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Bisons had a brief 2-1 lead after scoring twice in the fourth. Munenori Kawasaki singled home the first run before a passed ball brought in the second. Kawasaki singled twice while the trio of Darin Mastroianni, Jared Goedert and Kenny Wilson singled and walked. A.J. Jimenez was 1-for-4.
Dunedin 5 Jupiter 3
Jupiter, FL - Daniel Norris proved he's human after all but he still managed to turn in a quality start when it was all said and done against a rehabbing Rafael Furcal and the Marlins affiliate. He got Furcal to line out and struck out a pair to end the first. The second inning was more of a challenge for Norris as he gave up two singles but he helped out himself by throwing out a runner at third after a bunt. Then he got help from Marcus Knecht, who threw out a runner at the plate from right field to keep Jupiter off the board. The lefty overcame a Furcal single in the third but stumbled in the fourth by giving up three runs. He bounced back by allowing just one more hit over his last two frames. In all, Norris was charged with three runs on nine hits but posted a K-BB total of 6-0. Southpaw Tony Davis (1-0), in just his second appearance back from New Hampshire, worked 1.1 scoreless innings of one-hit ball, striking out three of the five hitters he faced. Danny Barnes took care of the rest with 1.2 scoreless innings for his second save, stranding a runner for Davis and punching out four hitters. For those of you scoring at home, Dunedin hurlers posted an overall K-BB mark of 13-0.
Emilio Guerrero opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Then Dalton Pompey followed a Dwight Smith Jr. single by pumping one over the wall for a two-run shot to tie the game at 3-3. A Derrick Chung base hit plated the winning run in the eighth. A wild pitch produced an insurance marker in the ninth. Chung had a three-hit night and Pompey had two while swiping his 21st base of the season. Christian Lopes had a double and Knecht collected a single.
Dayton 10 Lansing 5
Dayton, OH - The Reds affiliate torched Matt Dermody (3-2) to the tune of seven runs over 3.2 innings. The damage was done on nine hits and three walks and a Matt Dean error complicated matters, leading to two unearned runs. The only break Dermody got was Derrick Loveless nailing a runner at the plate from right field. The lefthander struck out three. Yeyfrey Del Rosario stranded a runner and worked 2.1 innings of scoreless ball, racking up four K's and walking just one. Lefty Alonzo Gonzalez overcame a hit and two walks to pitch a shutout frame but fellow southpaw Scott Silverstein was cuffed around for three runs on three hits and a walk in one inning. Gonzalez and Silverstein each struck out a batter.
The Lugnuts tried to dig out of a 7-0 hole by getting their first run in the fifth on a throwing error. They responded with four more in the seventh with run-scoring base raps from D.J. Davis, Dickie Joe Thon, Jorge Saez and Dawel Lugo. Davis had a double among his three hits, Saez doubled for a two-hit game and Santiago Nessy had a double and single. Mitch Nay reached base three different ways via a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. Thon had a walk to go with his single while Dean and Loveless also had base hits. Chaz Frank was the only Lugnut not to collect a hit but he did score a run.
DSL Braves 5 DSL Blue Jays 3
San Pedro de Macoris, DR - Osman Gutierrez got the start and pitched the first three innings. He got help from his battery mate Javier Hernandez, who threw out a runner trying to steal third, to keep the Braves off the board in the first. However, Gutierrez was nicked for two runs over the next two frames, the latter being unearned after a Bryan Lizardo error at third. The Nicaraguan gave up four hits with no walks and struck out two. Five of his six outs were on the ground. Lefty Wilfri Aleton surrendered three hits and two walks in two innings but escaped with only one run allowed after Miguel Almonte threw out a runner at the plate from second. Southpaw Guillermo De La Cruz (0-1) coughed up the lead when the Braves scored twice on two hits and a walk over one-plus innings. Yonardo Herdenez stranded two runners for De La Cruz and was not scored upon in two innings despite two hits and a walk.
The Jays got their first run in the fourth when Rodrigo Orozco doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scampered home on a Jesus Severino ground out. They drew even in the seventh with a two-run double by Eddy Alcantara. Hernandez and Francisco Rodriguez reached base twice with a single and a free pass. Lizardo and Enmanuel Moreta had the other base hits.
