With Esmil Rogers struggling the Jays might need a starting pitcher. Drew Hutchison did not pitch well for Buffalo, he did not have his good command and he was hit around some. Deck McGuire said "don't forget about me", he pitched 8 innings and had great support from the hitters. Dunedin were rained out. Vancouver won behind more excellent pitching from Tom Robson.
Lansing, Bluefield and the GCL Jays each blew leads in the ninth inning. Lansing came back to win thanks to a walk off home run from Kevin Patterson, Bluefield did not. The GCL Jays lost in the last inning, it was more than a blown save, it was a blown save that spiralled into a loss. Vancouver took a tied game to the ninth and lost. Daniel Norris pitched well for Lansing. The GCL Jays lost not one but a doubleheader.
Scranton 7 Buffalo 3
Drew Hutchison was not sharp in his AAA debut. Prior to his injury Hutchison was a strike thrower with excellent command. On Friday he threw 71 pitches, 40 strikes and 31 balls. That lack of command was evident in the second inning when Hutchison hit two batters en route to loading the bases and then giving up a grand slam. Hutchison went 3.2 innings and was charged with 6 runs on 6 hits. Joel Carreno was sharp in relief, he pitched 4.1 shutout innings.
Moises Sierra and Ryan Goins each had two hits. Anthony Gose had one, a triple. Kevin Pillar was 0-3 with a walk and is officially in a slump, he is hitting under 140 for August.
Richmond 2 New Hampshire 11
Deck McGuire must have heard Toronto needed a starter, he pitched eight innings and gave up two runs. After one hitter in the second inning McGuire had given up 2 runs on three hits. For the next seven innings he only conceded one more hit. This was likely his best AA start. In total McGuire gave up 4 hits, he walked one and had 6 K's.
The Fisher Cats racked up 15 hits. AJ Jimenez and Kevin Ahrens each had 2 hits with a home run. Kenny Wilson, Andy Burns and Gabe Jacobo also had 2 hits, John Tolisano had 3.
Dunedin at Lakeland - postponed, rain/lake
West Michigan 5 Lansing 7 - 12 innings
Daniel Norris pitched well, he pitched 4 plus scoreless innings, 2 hits, 4 walks, 6 K's. Colton Turner pitched 2.2 shutout innings in relief. The Lugnuts had a big second inning, Jason Leblebijian doubled in 2 runs and Emilio Guerrero singled in 2 more. Carlos Ramirez scored one of the runs in the second and also singled and scored in the third.
The Lugnuts took a 5-0 lead to the eighth. Ian Kadish was tagged for a 2 run home run in that inning. In the ninth Arik Sikula gave up 3 runs and the game was tied. The game stayed tied until Kevin Patterson hit a walk off 2 run home run in the twelfth. Ramirez, Guerrero, Lopes and Nessy had two hits each.
Vancouver 4 Boise 5
Vancouver scored a run in the first and with the way Tom Robson has been pitching it looked like that would be enough. Robson pitched six innings, he did give up 7 hits but the Canadians turned 5 double plays behind him. Robson had a 9-2 ground out / fly out ratio with just 2 K's.
Vancouver scored an unearned run in the first. In the 5th Brendan Kalfus tripled and Andy Fermin doubled on the way to scoring two runs. The Canadians made it 4-0 in the sixth, Seth Connor struck out, reached first and later scored on a ac fly. The 4-0 lead lasted to the eighth, Joe Spano and Garrett Pickens combined to give up 4 runs and tie the game. In the ninth Pickens loaded the bases with no outs leading to the walk off sac fly.
Bluefield 1 Johnson City 2 - 12 innings
There was very little offense in this game, each team had 6 hits in 12 innings. Brady Dragmire was the star for the Jays, he threw 6 shutout innings, he allowed 2 hits, but only 1 K. The Jays took a 1-0 lead to the ninth but Phil Kish blew the save. Yeyfry DelRosario was charged with the loss in his second inning of work.
The Jays scored their only run in the seventh, Jorge Saez doubled in the run. Saez was the only Jay with 2 hits.
GCL Blue Jays 4 GCL Phillies 6 - game 1
The Jays trailed 3-0 heading to the seventh, and last, inning. They scored 4 runs to take the lead. The Jays had just one hit headed to the seventh, but in that inning they used 4 hits, an error and a hit batter to score their runs. Rowdy Tellez got it started with a double, Michael DeLaCruz had a 2 RBI single and Gabriel Cenas singled in the go-ahead run. The excitement lasted for just a short while, Cale Wine gave up a walk off 3 run home run.
As mentioned the Jays had just 5 hits. Corey Gorman started and gave up 2 runs in five innings.
GCL Blue Jays 3 GCL Phillies 4 - game 2
Chad Jenkins started and pitched 2 perfect innings. Chad Beck pitched the third, another scoreless inning. Matt Smoral cruised through the fourth. In the fifth Smoral hit a batter but then got two outs. The next hitter hit a 2 run shot to put the Phillies ahead to stay. It was still a decent appearance for Smoral.
The Jays had gone ahead in the first inning with back to back doubles from Tom Collins and Rowdy Tellez. That was it until the seventh when another set of back to back doubles by Rolando Segovia and Franklin Barreto led to two runs. Barreto and Tellez had two hits each.
