The Dunedin Blue Jays were eliminated from the playoffs with their second consecutive loss to Lakeland. Meanwhile, Lansing suffered a loss in their playoff opener and now must win two in a row to stay alive. The Canadians had an off day before beginning their next playoff series.
Lakeland 3 @ Dunedin 0 – Boxscore
The Dunedin Blue Jays were shut out by Drew VerHagen and a pair of Lakeland relievers. Jon Berti led the attack with a 3-for-3 evening. Unfortunately, all his teammates could muster were a pair of singles by JP Arencibia and Jon Talley. A rehabbing Brett Lawrie and Kenny Wilson each drew a walk, but Wilson was caught stealing and Lawrie committed an error in the field. Kevin Pillar, Kevin Ahrens and Marcus Knecht were also among the batters held hitless.
Sean Nolin went 6.2 innings, striking out 6. He didn’t walk a batter. However, he surrendered two runs on six hits. Randy Boone retired four batters before Frank Gailey gave up the third run on a solo homer in the ninth.
Lansing 2 @ Fort Wayne 5 – Boxscore
KC Hobson and Gustavo Pierre led the offensive attack. Hobson was 3-for-5 with a double and Pierre was 2-for-4 with a double and each drove in one of Lansing’s two runs. Nicholas Baligod and Jason Leblebijian contributed singles, with the latter scoring one of the team’s two runs. Leadoff hitter Dalton Pompey was 0-for-3 with two walks. Chris Hawkins was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored the other Lugnuts run.
Noah Syndergaard started, but did not have his strongest stuff. He went 4 innings and allowed three runs on six hits and a walk. Syndergaard struck out 5 and got four groundouts compared to one flyout. Shawn Griffith gave up a run over 2 innings on four hits and Casey Beck retired only one of the four batters he faced, allowing a hit and two walks. Brandon Berl gave up a solo homer over 1.2 innings.
