David Cooper and Moises Sierra combined for seven hits, two home runs and six RBI to help Las Vegas defeat Reno in the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
Las Vegas 7 Reno 5 (10 innings)
The 51s scored three runs in the 10th inning to steal the win away from Arizona's triple-A affiliate. Former big leaguer (and Rule 5 selection) Joe Paterson was saddled with his fifth blown save while former Yankees reliever Jonathan Albaladejo took the loss. Las Vegas managed just two runs in 5.0 innings off of Reno starter and Arizona's top prospect Trevor Bauer, who was recently returned to the minors after four MLB starts. Former Angels prospect Sean O'Sullivan started the game for Toronto's triple-A affiliate and he pitched well once again and allowed just two runs (one earned) in 7.0 innings. Jerry Gil then blew the save in the ninth inning after Clint Everts worked a scoreless eighth. Bill Murphy worked the 10th inning and won the game despite allowing a run on two hits and two walks. David Cooper and Moises Sierra were the offensive stars of the game. The former went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI that came on a 10th inning, game-winning homer, while the latter had three hits including a two-run home run. Mark Sobolewski, in just his second triple-A game, went 1-for-5 and made two errors at the hot corner.
New Hampshire 6 Portland 5 (10 innings)
Toronto got the best of Boston's double-A affiliate, as well as the big league club. Former Blue Jays pitching prospect Mike MacDonald started for the Sea Dogs and was beat around by his former affiliate. John Tolisano, hitting out of the leadoff spot, paced the offense with four hits in six trips to the plate. He also drove in two runs. Kenen Bailli was 3-for-5 and raised his batting average to .336. Kevin Howard was held hitless but walked three times. On the bump for the Fisher Cats, John Stilson had an off game, allowing five runs in 3.0 innings. He permited six hits and two walks. The bullpen was outstanding and did not allow a run in seven combined innings. Sam Dyson worked the final two frames with two Ks - and did not allow a run.
St. Luice 6 Dunedin 2 (5 innings)
Rain hampered this game, which began on Saturday. The play resumed on Sunday to eek out the fifth inning for an official game. Shawn Griffith received the spot start for Dunedin and allowed six runs (three earned) in 4.0 innings. Canadian Brandon Kaye, promoted from the Gulf Coast League, worked the final frame. Jon Berti and Marcus Knecht each went 1-for-1 with a walk. Justin jackson was 0-for-2 and Kevin Pillar was also held hitless in three at-bats.
Lansing 7 Wisconsin
The Lugnuts held on for the win despite allowing five runs in the final four frames. Justin Nicolino started the game and held Milwaukee's affiliate hitless through four innings. His final line included two runs allowed on four hits in six innings. He struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk. Philip Brua and Ajay Meyer both struggled. At the plate, Shane Opitz went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, a walk and a stolen base. Kenny Wilson was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer. He also struck out three times. Gustavo Pierre went 0-for-4 with a strikeout and was picked off first base.
Vancouver 5 Spokane 2
The Canadians managed just two hits in the first seven innings before getting four in the eighth inning, which lead to a five-run outburst, as well as the win. Balbino Fuenmayor had two hits and drove in two. Jorge Flores went 1-for-3 and drove in two. Ian Parmley had a hit and a walk. Texas' emerging pitching prospect C.J. Edwards dominated Vancouver and allowed just one run, no walks and struck out nine in 5.0 innings. Eric Brown, who pitched in the Lansing bullpen earlier in the year, had another so-so start. He allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk in 4.0 innings. Jonathan Lucas worked three scoreless frames while 2012 first rounder Marcus Stroman struck out three and did not allow a walk or a hit in 2.0 innings.
Bluefield 8 Danville 6
Teenager Roberto Osuna had a respectable start. He allowed two runs in 4.0 innings. Canadian Les Williams was the most effective reliever on the day. He did not allow a run in 1.2 innings. Alex Azor, headed for a Naval commitment at the end of the year, went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Dwight Smith Jr. had two hits and drove in three runs. Jacob Anderson went 0-for-4 with two Ks. Matt Dean went 1-for-3 and continued his trend of swinging and missing with another strikeout (He has 34 Ks in 25 games).
GCL - Off Day
DSL Jays 3 DSL Brewers
Jorge Contreras continues to make a case for a U.S. work visa for 2013. He did not allow a hit or run in 7.0 innings of work and lowered his ERA to 1.36. Manuel Lopez worked the final two frames. Juan Tejada had two hits at the plate. Rolando Sergovia had a rough day by going hitless in three at-bats and by making two errors at the hot corner.
