The two highest ranking affiliates were in All-Star Game mode, while the lower levels produced some mixed results and a scandalous amount of unearned runs.
International League 3 at Pacific Coast League 0
Brad Mills started for the PCL and was the LVP of this one, allowing all 3 runs on a 2-out home run. They followed an error, making them unearned. In his 2 innings he also walked 2 and gave up 2 other hits, while recording one strikeout. David Cooper went 1 for 1 with a walk.
Western All-Stars 8 at Eastern All-Stars 3
Another All-Star Game, this one in the Eastern League, and another Jays prospect taking the loss. Zach Stewart started for the Eastern Eastern Leagues All-Stars and surrendered a hit and a 2-out 2 run home run. They were the only runs he would allow in his 2 innings, and he also struck out 2. Joel Carreno did even worse, allowing the go ahead run plus another for good measure in his 2/3 of an inning; he gave up 3 hits total and struck out 1. 3 Fisher Cats started this one; Moises Sierra did the best playing the whole game and going 2/4. Mike McDade went 1/4 and Travis d'Arnaud went 0/2, while Adeiny Hechavarria came on as a replacement and got three at bats, striking out twice and not reaching base.
Bradenton 7 at Dunedin 6
Things started off well for Dunedin but they just couldn't hold on. Ryan Schimpf hit a three-run home run in the first as part of a four run inning that put Dunedin up by 3. Bradenton chipped away though with two in the 4th and four in the 7th, and Dunedin's comeback in the 8th fell a run short. Brad McElroy and Sean Ochinko singled twice and walked and Brian van Kirk singled and homered. Dunedin outhit Bradenton 9-4 but drew two fewer walks and committed 3 more errors. leading to 4 of the 7 Bradenton runs being unearned. Drew Hutchison gave up the only earned ones, allowing 3 in five innings on 3 hits and 3 walks with 3 Ks. Steve Turnbill took the brunt of the damage, allowing 3 unearned runs that sealed the game.
Lansing 4 at Kane County 0
Marcus Walden (spoiler alert) earned tonight's first start with a sterling performance, going 7 strong and allowing only 3 hits. He got 11 of 14 outs in play on the ground, and walked none and struck out 5, while Shawn Griffith picked him up with another 2 scoreless innings. Lansing also outhit their opponent 9-4 but no errors and no walks allowed and that usually means you win. Only 4 Lugnuts picked up those hits, with Carlos Perez and Jake Marisnick (both 3/4, 2B) and Matt Nuzzo (2/4) doing the heavy lifting.
Boise 2 at Vancouver 4
This one was tied through seven and a half before Vancouver struck and added an insurance run in the 8th. Jonathan Jones, Nicholas Baligod and Jonathon Berti (yes, they spell Jonathan/thon 2 different ways) each had 2 hits with the former two doubling. Balbino Fuenmayor also singled and walked. The pitching effort was led by Zach Breault, who went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on a hit and 3 walks, whiffing 2. Travis Garret and Bryan Longpre pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief apiece, while Shane Davis pitched 1.
Bluefield 6 at Bristol 9
The B-Jays lost to ESPN (no not really, different Bristol) thanks to a 6-run 8th that put the game out of reach. Deivy Estrada started for Bluefield and was strong, pitching 5 scoreless innings while allowing 5 hits and striking out 3. Andrew Sikula gave up 3 in his one inning, Drew Elliot gave up 2 in his 1.1 (both unearned) and Milciades Santana gave up 4 while getting only 1 batter. Ugly. Andy Fermin and Leo Hernandez both had 2 singles, while Art Charles walked twice and Chris Hawkins hit a 3-run bomb.
GCL Pirates 8 at GCL Jays 3
Joe Musgrave made his Jays debut, going 1.2 innings and allowing 2 hits and a walk, resulting in 1 run scoring. Randal Thompson pitched 4.1 innings of 1-hit, scoreless ball and no batter had more than a single hit.
